An Artificial Neural Network for Movement Pattern Analysis to Estimate Blood Alcohol Content Level

Impairments in gait occur after alcohol consumption, and, if detected in real-time, could guide the delivery of “just-in-time” injury prevention interventions. We aimed to identify the salient features of gait that could be used for estimating blood alcohol content (BAC) level in a typical drinking environment. We recruited 10 young adults with a history of heavy drinking to test our research app. During four consecutive Fridays and Saturdays, every hour from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., they were prompted to use the app to report alcohol consumption and complete a 5-step straight-line walking task, during which 3-axis acceleration and angular velocity data was sampled at a frequency of 100 Hz. BAC for each subject was calculated. From sensor signals, 24 features were calculated using a sliding window technique, including energy, mean, and standard deviation. Using an artificial neural network (ANN), we performed regression analysis to define a model determining association between gait features and BACs. Part (70%) of the data was then used as a training dataset, and the results tested and validated using the rest of the samples. We evaluated different training algorithms for the neural network and the result showed that a Bayesian regularization neural network (BRNN) was the most efficient and accurate. Analyses support the use of the tandem gait task paired with our approach to reliably estimate BAC based on gait features. Results from this work could be useful in designing effective prevention interventions to reduce risky behaviors during periods of alcohol consumption.

Visual-Inertial Sensor Fusion Models and Algorithms for Context-Aware Indoor Navigation

Positioning in navigation systems is predominantly performed by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). However, while GNSS-enabled devices have become commonplace for outdoor navigation, their use for indoor navigation is hindered due to GNSS signal degradation or blockage. For this, development of alternative positioning approaches and techniques for navigation systems is an ongoing research topic. In this dissertation, I present a new approach and address three major navigational problems: indoor positioning, obstacle detection, and keyframe detection. The proposed approach utilizes inertial and visual sensors available on smartphones and are focused on developing: a framework for monocular visual internal odometry (VIO) to position human/object using sensor fusion and deep learning in tandem; an unsupervised algorithm to detect obstacles using sequence of visual data; and a supervised context-aware keyframe detection. The underlying technique for monocular VIO is a recurrent convolutional neural network for computing six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) in an end-to-end fashion and an extended Kalman filter module for fine-tuning the scale parameter based on inertial observations and managing errors. I compare the results of my featureless technique with the results of conventional feature-based VIO techniques and manually-scaled results. The comparison results show that while the framework is more effective compared to featureless method and that the accuracy is improved, the accuracy of feature-based method still outperforms the proposed approach The approach for obstacle detection is based on processing two consecutive images to detect obstacles. Conducting experiments and comparing the results of my approach with the results of two other widely used algorithms show that my algorithm performs better; 82% precision compared with 69%. In order to determine the decent frame-rate extraction from video stream, I analyzed movement patterns of camera and inferred the context of the user to generate a model associating movement anomaly with proper frames-rate extraction. The output of this model was utilized for determining the rate of keyframe extraction in visual odometry (VO). I defined and computed the effective frames for VO and experimented with and used this approach for context-aware keyframe detection. The results show that the number of frames, using inertial data to infer the decent frames, is decreased.

Understanding Pregnancy and Postpartum Health Using Ecological Momentary Assessment and Mobile Technology: Protocol for the Postpartum Mothers Mobile Study

There are significant racial disparities in pregnancy and postpartum health outcomes, including postpartum weight retention and cardiometabolic risk. These racial disparities are a result of a complex interplay between contextual, environmental, behavioral, and psychosocial factors.
This protocol provides a description of the development and infrastructure for the Postpartum Mothers Mobile Study (PMOMS), designed to better capture women's daily experiences and exposures from late pregnancy through 1 year postpartum. The primary aims of PMOMS are to understand the contextual, psychosocial, and behavioral factors contributing to racial disparities in postpartum weight and cardiometabolic health, with a focus on the daily experiences of stress and racism, as well as contextual forms of stress (eg, neighborhood stress and structural racism).
PMOMS is a longitudinal observation study that is ancillary to an existing randomized control trial, GDM
(Comparison of Two Screening Strategies for Gestational Diabetes). PMOMS uses an efficient and cost-effective approach for recruitment by leveraging the infrastructure of GDM
, facilitating enrollment of participants while consolidating staff support from both studies. The primary data collection method is ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and through smart technology (ie, smartphones and scales). The development of the study includes: (1) the pilot phase and development of the smartphone app; (2) feedback and further development of the app including selection of key measures; and (3) implementation, recruitment, and retention.
PMOMS aims to recruit 350 participants during pregnancy, to be followed through the first year after delivery. Recruitment and data collection started in December 2017 and are expected to continue through September 2020. Initial results are expected in December 2020. As of early May 2019, PMOMS recruited a total of 305 participants. Key strengths and features of PMOMS have included data collection via smartphone technology to reduce the burden of multiple on-site visits, low attrition rate because of participation in an ongoing trial in which women are already motivated and enrolled, high EMA survey completion and the use of EMA as a unique data collection method to understand daily experiences, and shorter than expected timeframe for enrollment because of the infrastructure of the GDM
trial.
This protocol outlines the development of the PMOMS, one of the first published studies to use an ongoing EMA and mobile technology protocol during pregnancy and throughout 1 year postpartum to understand the health of childbearing populations and enduring racial disparities in postpartum weight and cardiometabolic health. Our findings will contribute to the improvement of data collection methods, particularly the role of EMA in capturing multiple exposures and knowledge in real time. Furthermore, the results of the study will inform future studies investigating weight and cardiometabolic health during pregnancy and the postpartum period, including how social determinants produce population disparities in these outcomes.

Modeling spatial accessibility for in-vitro fertility (IVF) care services in Iowa

The challenge of computing a quantitative index for spatial accessibility that describes the degree of access that exists for IVF healthcare in Iowa requires research and evaluation. Our objective was to apply computational methods including a modified gravity model, techniques from spatial interaction modeling, and clustering to discover underserved areas and derive a spatial accessibility surface at the census tract level for IVF centers in Iowa. Key sociodemographic variables (age, median household income, race/ethnicity) describing female patients seeking infertility healthcare services were identified based on a survey of physician and nurses and weighted based on systematically cross-comparing the variables for importance. Self-organizing map techniques (SOM) were used to identify and map clusters capturing the degree of match between sociodemographic data and the expert-identified sociodemographic variables. The computed spatial accessibility surface was then combined with the sociodemographic clusters to identify underserved regions. Accessibility and degree of sociodemographic match were abstracted to three classes each (high, moderate, and low access, and high, moderate, and low sociodemographic match). To determine degree of fit and validation of the model, patient residential data (by zip codes mapped to census tracts) were overlaid on the resulting accessibility map. These results serve as an indicator that enables stakeholders to compare different areas from a spatial and sociodemographic point of view for the comparing potential and real access and how close they are. Combining accessibility results with sociodemographic mapping provides valuable insights into the accessibility of IVF services to a state’s population and the degree to which demand for IVF care is being met. Geospatial techniques are a promising tool for IVF providers considering how best to expand access to care.

TRAJEDI: Trajectory Dissimilarity

The vast increase in our ability to obtain and store trajectory data necessitates trajectory analytics techniques to extract useful information from this data. Pair-wise distance functions are a foundation building block for common operations on trajectory datasets including constrained SELECT queries, k-nearest neighbors, and similarity and diversity algorithms. The accuracy and performance of these operations depend heavily on the speed and accuracy of the underlying trajectory distance function, which is in turn affected by trajectory calibration. Current methods either require calibrated data, or perform calibration of the entire relevant dataset first, which is expensive and time consuming for large datasets. We present TRAJEDI, a calibrationaware pair-wise distance calculation scheme that outperforms naive approaches while preserving accuracy. We also provide analyses of parameter tuning to trade-off between speed and accuracy. Our scheme is usable with any diversity, similarity or k-nearest neighbor algorithm.
Using Phone Sensors and an Artificial Neural Network to Detect Gait Changes During Drinking Episodes in the Natural Environment

Phone sensors could be useful in assessing changes in gait that occur with alcohol consumption. This study determined (1) feasibility of collecting gait-related data during drinking occasions in the natural environment, and (2) how gait-related features measured by phone sensors relate to estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC). Ten young adult heavy drinkers were prompted to complete a 5-step gait task every hour from 8pm to 12am over four consecutive weekends. We collected 3-xis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data from phone sensors, and computed 24 gait-related features using a sliding window technique. eBAC levels were calculated at each time point based on Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) of alcohol use. We used an artificial neural network model to analyze associations between sensor features and eBACs in training (70% of the data) and validation and test (30% of the data) datasets. We analyzed 128 data points where both eBAC and gait-related sensor data was captured, either when not drinking (n=60), while eBAC was ascending (n=55) or eBAC was descending (n=13). 21 data points were captured at times when the eBAC was greater than the legal limit (0.08 mg/dl). Using a Bayesian regularized neural network, gait-related phone sensor features showed a high correlation with eBAC (Pearson's r > 0.9), and >95% of estimated eBAC would fall between -0.012 and +0.012 of actual eBAC. It is feasible to collect gait-related data from smartphone sensors during drinking occasions in the natural environment. Sensor-based features can be used to infer gait changes associated with elevated blood alcohol content.
Detecting Community Structure in Dynamic Social Networks Using the Concept of Leadership

Detecting community structure in social networks is a fundamental problem empowering us to identify groups of actors with similar interests. There have been extensive works focusing on finding communities in static networks, however, in reality, due to dynamic nature of social networks, they are evolving continuously. Ignoring the dynamic aspect of social networks, neither allows us to capture evolutionary behavior of the network nor to predict the future status of individuals. Aside from being dynamic, another significant characteristic of real-world social networks is the presence of leaders, i.e. nodes with high degree centrality having a high attraction to absorb other members and hence to form a local community. In this paper, we devised an efficient method to incrementally detect communities in highly dynamic social networks using the intuitive idea of importance and persistence of community leaders over time. Our proposed method is able to find new communities based on the previous structure of the network without recomputing them from scratch. This unique feature, enables us to efficiently detect and track communities over time rapidly. Experimental results on the synthetic and real-world social networks demonstrate that our method is both effective and efficient in discovering communities in dynamic social networks.
