A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a large gauge transformation.

We provide a Hamiltonian derivation of recently discovered dual BMS charges. In order to do so, we work in the first order formalism and add to the usual Palatini action, the Holst term, which does not contribute to the equations of motion. We give a method for finding the leading order integrable dual charges à

Wald-Zoupas and construct the corresponding charge algebra. We argue that in the presence of fermions, the relevant term that leads to dual charges is the topological Nieh-Yan term.

We supplement the recently found dual gravitational charges with dual charges for the whole BMS symmetry algebra. Furthermore, we extend the dual charges away from null infinity, defining subleading dual charges. These subleading dual charges complement the subleading BMS charges in the literature and together account for all the Newman-Penrose charges.

We consider the consequences of the dual gravitational charges for the phase space of radiating modes, and find that they imply a new soft NUT theorem. In particular, we argue that the existence of these new charges removes the need for imposing boundary conditions at spacelike infinity that would otherwise preclude the existence of NUT charges.

In this paper we establish a relation between the non-linearly conserved New-man-Penrose charges and certain subleading terms in a large-

expansion of the BMS charges in an asymptotically-flat spacetime. We define the subleading BMS charges by considering a 1

, one obtains the standard BMS charges, which would be integrable and conserved in the absence of a flux term at null infinity, corresponding to gravitational radiation, or Bondi news. At subleading orders, analogous terms in general provide obstructions to the integrability of the corresponding charges. Since the subleading terms are defined close to null infinity, but vanish actually at infinity, the analogous obstructions are not associated with genuine Bondi news. One may instead describe them as corresponding to “fake news”. At order

, we find that a set of integrable charges can be defined and that these are related to the ten non-linearly conserved Newman-Penrose charges.

We relate the recent derivation of the linearised Einstein equation on an AdS background from holographic entanglement entropy arguments to the Sparling construction: we derive the differential form whose exterior derivative gives the Einstein equation from the Sparling formalism. We develop the study of perturbations within the context of the Sparling formalism and find that the Sparling form vanishes for linearised perturbations on flat space.

We show that charges associated with the internal Lorentz symmetries of general relativity, with higher derivative boundary terms included in the action, capture observable gravitational wave effects. In particular, the Gauss-Bonnet charge measures the precession rate of a freely-falling gyroscope, while the Pontryagin charge encodes the relative radial acceleration of freely-falling test masses. This relation highlights the importance of the tetrad formalism and the physical significance of asymptotic internal Lorentz symmetries.

In the doubled field theory approach to string theory the T-duality group is promoted to a manifest symmetry at the expense of replacing ordinary Riemannian geometry with generalised geometry on a doubled space. The local symmetries are then given by a generalised Lie derivative and its associated algebra. This paper constructs an analogous structure for the extended geometry of M-theory. A crucial by-product of this construction is the derivation of the physical section condition for M-theory formulated in an extended space.

We give the supersymmetric extension of exceptional field theory for E
7(7)
, which is based on a (4 + 56)-dimensional generalized spacetime subject to a covariant constraint. The fermions are tensors under the local Lorentz group SO(1, 3) × SU(8) and transform as scalar densities under the E
7(7)
(internal) generalized diffeomorphisms. The supersymmetry transformations are manifestly covariant under these symmetries and close, in particular, into the generalized diffeomorphisms of the 56-dimensional space. We give the fermionic field equations and prove supersymmetric invariance. We establish the consistency of these results with the recently constructed generalized geometric formulation of

We present a new method for completing higher derivative corrections for theories that exhibit duality symmetries under reduction. This proposal is based on the observation that duality symmetry in the reduced theory highly constrains the form of the unreduced theory. We apply this idea to closed bosonic string theory and complete the Riemann squared term to simply derive the known full tree-level effective action to order

′.
