يحكي الكتاب عن \"المعطف والأنف\" قصة المعطف تحكي رجل مسكين يدعى أكاكي أكاكيفتش، رجل يعيش آخر سوى النسخ ولو سلمت له وظيفة أخرى لما كان سيكون قادرا على إتمامها، يتعرض لسخرية من زملائه في العمل دائما يعيش بمعزل عن العامة لا يملك سوى معطفا واحدا يحاول ترقيعه ولكن يبدو أنه لا جدوى، فيلجأ لشراء معطف جديد ثمين بالنسبة لفرد فقير مثله أما قصة \"الأنف\" فتتحدث عن أنف فصل عن وجه صاحبه وراح يتجول كشخصية مستقلة في بطرسبورغ وبطل القصة هو يعقو بليفيتش-حلاق-قانع بعيشته في يوم من الأيام وعند تقطيعه الخبر يجد أنفا بين الخبز والغريب أن الأنف مألوف لديه إنه يخص مفتش الكليات كوفاليوف الذي تعود أن يحلق له أيام الأربعاء والأحد، فيخاف ويحاول التخلص منه، وبدأ يقرص جسمه ليتأكد من أنه لم يكن نائما.
