A MULTIMEDIA EVENT [Ursula K. Le Guin]'s new novel, ''Always Coming Home,'' is packaged in a neat box that includes a cassette, ''Music and Poetry of the [Kesh],'' with a score composed by [Todd Barton] and words by Mrs. Le Guin. The novel is about an imaginary people living in a far distant future on the Pacific coast. As a native of Berkeley, Calif., who lives in Portland, Ore., Mrs. Le Guin obviously knows her fictional territory. Moreover, if anyone is the world's greatest authority on the Kesh, it's the author, since she invented them. Mrs. Le Guin is entitled: she's written a number of science fiction and fantasy novels as well as short stories for The New Yorker, poetry and criticism. For ''The Farthest Shore,'' the final volume in her ''Earthsea Trilogy,'' she received a National Book Award for children's books in 1973. Speaking about the novel and cassette, Mrs. Le Guin said, ''You're not supposed to read and listen at the same time. You can read the book and look at the wonderful drawings by [Margaret Chodos] that illustrate how the Kesh lived, then hear the music, or you can get in the mood by first listening. No rules. ''The nonexistent Kesh gave the copyright office a problem. They thought I was trying to claim folk songs as my own, until I told them the Kesh people hadn't even been born yet.'' Mrs. Le Guin said that her writing overlaps science fiction, fantasy, young adult and mainstream novels. ''I don't care about the pigeonhole,'' she said. ''I just like writing stories.
