The story opens a touch slowly as [Conor Grennan] describes how he became a volunteer at an orphanage called the Little Princes Home, near Kathmandu. He likes the 16 boys and 2 girls, marveling at their energy. He includes an brief overview of the political situation of Nepal and the 1996-2006 civil war between its monarchy and Maoists rebels. The rebels sometimes abducted children to serve as messengers, servants and soldiers. The book works because Grennan presents the children as quirky individuals obsessed with pressing issues (such as why he's not married) rather than as tragic victims of crushing Third World poverty. The result is an uplifting story about a guy who ended up doing good - by way of searching for the right pickup line.Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal
