Complex heatmap visualization
Heatmap is a widely used statistical visualization method on matrix‐like data to reveal similar patterns shared by subsets of rows and columns. In the R programming language, there are many packages that make heatmaps. Among them, the ComplexHeatmap package provides the richest toolset for constructing highly customizable heatmaps. ComplexHeatmap can easily establish connections between multisource information by automatically concatenating and adjusting a list of heatmaps as well as complex annotations, which makes it widely applied in data analysis in many fields, especially in bioinformatics, to find hidden structures in the data. In this article, we give a comprehensive introduction to the current state of ComplexHeatmap, including its modular design, its rich functionalities, and its broad applications. Complex heatmap is a powerful visualization method for revealing associations between multiple sources of information. We have developed an R package named ComplexHeatmap that provides comprehensive functionalities for heatmap visualization. It has been widely used in the bioinformatics community. We give a comprehensive introduction to the current state of ComplexHeatmap in this article. Structural Design Strategies of Polymer Matrix Composites for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding: A Review
HighlightsThe review discusses the key concepts, loss mechanisms and test methods of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The research progress of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites with different structures is detailedly illustrated, especially their preparation methods and corresponding evaluations. The key scientific and technical problems for polymer matrix EMI shielding composites with different structures are proposed, and their development trend are prospected. With the widespread application of electronic communication technology, the resulting electromagnetic radiation pollution has been significantly increased. Metal matrix electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have disadvantages such as high density, easy corrosion, difficult processing and high price, etc. Polymer matrix EMI shielding composites possess light weight, corrosion resistance and easy processing. However, the current polymer matrix composites present relatively low electrical conductivity and poor EMI shielding performance. This review firstly discusses the key concept, loss mechanism and test method of EMI shielding. Then the current development status of EMI shielding materials is summarized, and the research progress of polymer matrix EMI shielding composites with different structures is illustrated, especially for their preparation methods and evaluation. Finally, the corresponding key scientific and technical problems are proposed, and their development trend is also prospected.
Chinese ways of seeing and open-air painting
\"How did modern Chinese painters see landscape? Did they depict nature in the same way as premodern Chinese painters? What does the artistic perception of modern Chinese painters reveal about the relationship between artists and the nation-state? Could an understanding of modern Chinese landscape painting tell us something previously unknown about art, political change, and the epistemological and sensory regime of twentieth-century China? Yi Gu tackles these questions by focusing on the rise of open-air painting in modern China. Chinese artists almost never painted outdoors until the late 1910s, when the New Culture Movement prompted them to embrace direct observation, linear perspective, and a conception of vision based on Cartesian optics. The new landscape practice brought with it unprecedented emphasis on perception and redefined artistic expertise. Central to the pursuit of open-air painting from the late 1910s right through to the early 1960s was a reinvigorated and ever-growing urgency to see suitably as a Chinese and to see the Chinese homeland correctly. Examining this long-overlooked ocular turn, Gu not only provides an innovative perspective from which to reflect on complicated interactions of the global and local in China, but also calls for rethinking the nature of visual modernity\"--Front flap of dust jacket.
Clinical and economic impact of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a multicentre study in China
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a serious threat to global health. In China, the proportion of S. aureus isolates that were MRSA was 44.6% in 2014. The clinical and economic impact of MRSA in China remains largely uninvestigated. This study aims to compare the differences in hospital costs, length of hospital stay, and hospital mortality rate between MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) colonization or infection and between MRSA cases and those without an S. aureus infection. A retrospective and multicentre study was conducted in four tertiary hospitals in China between 2013 and 2015. Inpatient characteristics and hospital costs were collected from electronic medical records. We conducted propensity score matching (PSM) to eliminate selection bias by balancing the potential confounding variables between the two groups. The main indicators included hospital costs, length of hospital stay, and hospital mortality rate. A total of 1,335 inpatients with MRSA, 1,397 with MSSA, and 33,606 without an S. aureus infection were included. PSM obtained 954 and 1,313 pairs between the MRSA and MSSA groups and between the MRSA and S. aureus -free groups, respectively. After PSM, MRSA colonization or infection is associated with an increased total hospital cost ranging from $3,220 to $9,606, an excess length of hospital stay of 6 days–14 days, and an attributable hospital mortality rate of 0–3.58%. Between the MRSA and MSSA groups, MRSA colonization or infection was significantly associated with a higher total hospital cost and longer length of hospital stay among survivors but not among non-survivors; however, there were no differences in the hospital mortality rate between these two groups. Between the MRSA and the S. aureus -free groups, MRSA colonization or infection was significantly associated with an increased total hospital cost, a prolonged length of hospital stay and a higher hospital mortality rate among both survivors and non-survivors. It is critical to quantify the clinical and economic impact of MRSA to justify resource allocation for the development of strategies to improve clinical outcomes and to reduce the economic burden.

Plasmon-driven nanowire actuators for on-chip manipulation
Chemically synthesized metal nanowires are promising building blocks for next-generation photonic integrated circuits, but technological implementation in monolithic integration will be severely hampered by the lack of controllable and precise manipulation approaches, due to the strong adhesion of nanowires to substrates in non-liquid environments. Here, we demonstrate this obstacle can be removed by our proposed earthworm-like peristaltic crawling motion mechanism, based on the synergistic expansion, friction, and contraction in plasmon-driven metal nanowires in non-liquid environments. The evanescently excited surface plasmon greatly enhances the heating effect in metal nanowires, thereby generating surface acoustic waves to drive the nanowires crawling along silica microfibres. Advantages include sub-nanometer positioning accuracy, low actuation power, and self-parallel parking. We further demonstrate on-chip manipulations including transporting, positioning, orientation, and sorting, with on-situ operation, high selectivity, and great versatility. Our work paves the way to realize full co-integration of various functionalized photonic components on single chips. Implementing metal nanowires in photonic circuits is challenging due to lack of suitable manipulation techniques. Here, the authors present an earthworm-like peristaltic crawling motion mechanism, based on surface plasmons and surface acoustic waves, and show on-chip manipulations of single nanowires.
The end of accounting and the path forward for investors and managers
An innovative new valuation framework with truly useful economic indicators The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers shows how the ubiquitous financial reports have become useless in capital market decisions and lays out an actionable alternative.
