\"A man torn between two continents finds himself in a dangerous confrontation between tradition and corruption. Solo is a former cop who ran away from a dark past in France to start his life over again in Bamako, Mali, as a PI. An ordinary case turns out to be not so ordinary. The drug mule gets her throat slit. The French lawyer is too beautiful and too well-informed. The cocaine is too plentiful\"--Page 4 of cover.
Sustainable and degradable plastics
Plastics that are developed from renewable resources and can be recycled are highly environmentally desirable alternatives to current petroleum-based non-degradable polymers. Now, an effective and robust industrially relevant strategy towards high-performance biomass-derived degradable poly(γ-thiobutyrolactone)s has been developed.
Targeting enhanced digestibility: Prioritizing low pith lignification to complement low p-coumaric acid content as environmental stress intensity increases
Forage maize is a central pillar of dairy cow feeding in France, directly influencing milk production. Drought significantly affects both maize yield and digestibility, which are both key parameters required for hybrid registration purposes. Research on maize inbred lines has revealed droughts’ notable effect on dry matter and cell wall digestibilities due to changes in cell wall composition, directly impacting forage quality. No such studies have been performed on forage maize hybrids however, which are the main seed type used in the agricultural sector. In this paper, we aimed to understand the impact of water and heat stress on forage maize digestibility, and to uncover the factors controlling it. We grew a panel of eleven modern forage maize hybrids for two years under four different controlled water stress modalities. These plants were agronomically, biochemically and histologically assayed, allowing us to perform a multiscale analysis to determine the traits responsible for variations in digestibility. By establishing a comprehensive heat and water stress index, we classified the environmental conditions. We demonstrated that under severe stress, ear production decreases significantly, but dry matter digestibility can be maintained through increased cell wall digestibility. This boost in cell wall digestibility was due to a reduction in p-hydroxycinnamic acid content and changes in lignin distribution, while lignin content and structure remained stable. The significant impact of lignin distribution on cell wall digestibility increased with the severity of the stress, reaching an extreme threshold where biochemical parameters solely account for digestibility variations. To improve maize digestibility, it will be necessary to better understand how the reduction in carbon flux under stress affects p-hydroxycinnamic acid levels without greatly impacting lignin content. Finally, our work suggests that the inclusion of moderate stress conditions in future maize breeding programs will be necessary to better adapt forage maize hybrids to climate change.
Synthesis of novel biodegradable elastomers based on poly3-hydroxy butyrate and poly3-hydroxy octanoate via transamidation reaction
Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs) are a class of polymers receiving attention because of their potential as renewable, biodegradable and high-technology properties. Unlike most short chain length (scl) PHAs such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), medium chain length (mcl) PHAs such as poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) (PHO) exhibit low crystallinity and are elastomeric in character. PHB-b–PEG-b–PHO block copolymers can combine both properties in block copolymer matrix. In this study, we report the synthesis of the block copolymers combining the PHB and PHO blocks. Transamidation reactions of PHB with polyethylene glycol with primary amine yield equimolar amounts and PHB with amine ends. PHO reacts with the modified PHB containing the amine end to give PHB-b–PEG-b–PHO block copolymers. Structural analysis of the products was performed by using 1 H–, 13 C, heteronuclear single quantum coherence NMR techniques. Thermal and mechanical properties of the block polymers were also evaluated.
Genotype-dependent response to water deficit: increases in maize cell wall digestibility occurs through reducing both p-coumaric acid and lignification of the rind
The compositional dynamics of the cell wall are influenced by drought, and it has been demonstrated that water deficit induces significant changes in its main components. Moreover, changes in cell wall concentration and distribution in response to water deficit affect maize degradability. This study presents a histological and biochemical analysis of thirteen maize inbred lines, evaluated over two years in Pobra de Brollón (Spain) and Mauguio (France) under contrasting water availability conditions. Our aim was to investigate the environmental and genotypic impacts on histological and biochemical profiles, to assess in vitro cell wall digestibility under water deficit, and to explore how these responses relate to changes in cell wall composition and structure. Overall, we observed greater concentrations of -coumaric acid under control conditions, with significant decreases in stressed conditions at each location. Histologically, we found an increase in non-lignified tissues under water deficit conditions across all tissues at each location as well. In terms of cell wall digestibility (IVCWRD), significant increases were detected in response to water deficit. Additionally, genotype-dependent response patterns were evident, revealing two distinct behavioural groups. Notably, in plastic genotypes, increases in IVCWRD in response to water deficit were concomitant to reductions in p-coumaric acid content and a decrease in red-stained lignified tissues in the rind. This study emphasizes the complex, genotype-dependent responses to water deficit, underscoring the important roles of plasticity and stability in shaping the impact on maize cell wall digestibility; paving the way to breed for adapted genotypes to face climate changes.
Consensus on the Structure and Content of Birth Plans: A Modified Delphi Study
Background Few pregnant women in France wrote birth plans as in many other countries. The literature stresses the heterogeneity of birth plan content, which limits the utility of assessing the effects of birth plans on women's experience of childbirth. This study aimed to obtain a French national consensus on the structure and content of birth plans. Methods A multidisciplinary steering committee was established. An electronic modified Delphi study was conducted to develop a structure and content for birth plans between November 2022 and June 2023. During three Delphi consensus rounds, panellists, including perinatal health care professionals and user representatives, were asked to rate individually and independently each proposed section and subsection formulation of the birth plan for its appropriateness. An external board assessed the understandability of the final birth plan's preamble and content. Results The steering committee proposed 103 formulations corresponding to items to be covered in a birth plan, categorized into 8 sections and 30 subsections, for evaluation in the Delphi rounds. The first round was completed by 42 panellists (mainly midwives), the second by 39, and the third by 36. Finally, the steering committee approved the final components of the structured birth plan in 8 sections and 19 subsections, after its reviewing by the 21 members of the external board. Conclusion A French national Delphi process, after three rounds and validation by an external board, made it possible to reach a consensus on the structure and content of a birth plan in 8 sections and 19 subsections. Patient or Public Contribution User representatives were included as experts in the Delphi rounds, and in the external board to approve the final version of the structured birth plan.
Precise control of water stress in the field reveals different response thresholds for forage yield and digestibility of maize hybrids
With dwindling global freshwater supplies and increasing water stress, agriculture is coming under increasing pressure to reduce water use. Plant breeding requires high analytical capabilities. For this reason, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used to develop prediction equations for whole-plant samples, particularly for predicting dry matter digestibility, which has a major impact on the energy value of forage maize hybrids and is required for inclusion in the official French catalogue. Although the historical NIRS equations have long been used routinely in seed company breeding programmes, they do not predict all variables with the same accuracy. In addition, little is known about how accurate their predictions are under different water stress-environments. Here, we examined the effects of water stress and stress intensity on agronomic, biochemical, and NIRS predictive values in a set of 13 modern S0-S1 forage maize hybrids under four different environmental conditions resulting from the combination of a northern and southern location and two monitored water stress levels in the south. First, we compared the reliability of NIRS predictions for basic forage quality traits obtained using the historical NIRS predictive equations and the new equations we recently developed. We found that NIRS predicted values were affected to varying degrees by environmental conditions. We also showed that forage yield gradually decreased as a function of water stress, whereas both dry matter and cell wall digestibilities increased regardless of the intensity of water stress, with variability among the tested varieties decreasing under the most stressed conditions. By combining forage yield and dry matter digestibility, we were able to quantify digestible yield and identify varieties with different strategies for coping with water stress, raising the exciting possibility that important potential selection targets still exist. Finally, from a farmer's perspective, we were able to show that late silage harvest has no effect on dry matter digestibility and that moderate water stress does not necessarily result in a loss of digestible yield.
α,ω-Epoxide, Oxetane, and Dithiocarbonate Telechelic Copolyolefins: Access by Ring-Opening Metathesis/Cross-Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP/CM) of Cycloolefins in the Presence of Functional Symmetric Chain-Transfer Agents
Epoxide- and oxetane-α,ω-telechelic (co)polyolefins have been successfully synthesized by the tandem ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)/cross-metathesis (CM) of cyclic olefins using Grubbs’ second-generation catalyst (G2) in the presence of a bifunctional symmetric alkene epoxide- or oxetane-functionalized chain-transfer agent (CTA). From cyclooctene (COE), trans,trans,cis-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene (CDT), norbornene (NB), and methyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate (NBCOOMe), with bis(oxiran-2-ylmethyl) maleate (CTA 1), bis(oxetane-2-ylmethyl) maleate (CTA 2), or bis(oxetane-2-ylmethyl) (E)-hex-3-enedioate (CTA 3), well-defined α,ω-di(epoxide or oxetane) telechelic PCOEs, P(COE-co-NB or -NBCOOMe)s, and P(NB-co-CDT)s were isolated under mild operating conditions (40 or 60 °C, 24 h). The oxetane CTA 3 and the epoxide CTA 1 were revealed to be significantly more efficient in the CM step than CTA 2, which apparently inhibits the reaction. Quantitative dithiocarbonatation (CS2/LiBr, 40 °C, THF) of an α,ω-di(epoxide) telechelic P(NB-co-CDT) afforded a convenient approach to the analogous α,ω-bis(dithiocarbonate) telechelic P(NB-co-CDT). The nature of the end-capping function of the epoxide/oxetane/dithiocarbonate telechelic P(NB-co-CDT)s did not impact their thermal signature, as measured by DSC. These copolymers also displayed a low viscosity liquid-like behavior and a shear thinning rheological behavior.
Evaluation of Band-Selective HSQC and HMBC: Methodological Validation on the Cyclosporin Cyclic Peptide and Application for Poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s Stereoregularity Determination
Band-selective (bs) HSQC, improving spectral resolution by restriction of the heteronuclear dimension without inducing spectral folding, has been recently used for polymer tacticity determination. Herein is reported an evaluation of various bs-HSQC and bs-HMBC sequences, first from a methodological point of view (selectivity, dependence to INEPT interpulse delay or relaxation delay), using the cyclic peptide cyclosporin selected as a model compound, and then from an applicative approach, comparing tacticity determined from bs-HSQC and bs-HMBC experiments to the one obtained from 1D 13C1H on poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate)s samples. For HSQC sequences, the 13C selectivity scheme consisting in substituting a 13C broadband refocalization by a selective one revealed itself problematic, with unwanted aliased signals, whereas the insertion of double pulsed field gradients spin-echo (DPFGSE) or the use of opposite sign gradients bracketing a selective refocalization gave satisfactory results. Determination of the probability of syndiotactic enchainments, Ps, by bs-HSQC is fully consistent and no precision loss was observed when decreasing acquisition time (37 min vs. 106 min for 1D 13C1H). Bs-HMBC, although not straightforwardly applicable for tacticity determination, could provide (after a calibration step) an alternative for compounds of which only 13C carbonyl signals are resolved enough for discriminating between syndiotactic and isotactic configurations.
A validation workflow for treatment wetland performance data
Treatment wetlands (TWs) effectively remove target pollutants and enhance urban water circularity and resilience. They constitute a prominent solution for urban wastewater treatment, thanks to their adaptability across various types of wastewater, scales and climatic conditions. However, the disparity in TW designs and the focus on a restricted set of variables applicable to research studies impede any comprehensive evaluation and comparison of TW performance. Our study introduces a methodology for data validation, in concurrently establishing a workflow specific to TW. This approach is aimed at defining the scope and relationships within the data, implementing checks and concatenating them into a quality flag, as an initial step towards building reliable statistical models. We underscore the importance of both mobilising comprehensive knowledge and identifying customary, yet implicit, choices intertwined in data processing. As for the application workflow, we collected and analysed data sourced from peer-reviewed papers on horizontal and vertical flow TW. Deficiencies were noted in key data elements like dimensions, concentrations and operational conditions. For the data analysis, relationships are highlighted between variables introduced for modelling purposes. These methodologies and workflows assess the quality of the data, in paving the way towards more dependable statistical models for TW design and implementation.
