Virtual Metrology Filter-Based Algorithms for Estimating Constant Ocean Current Velocity
2023
The strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) and Doppler velocity log (DVL) integrated navigation system are widely used for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Whereas DVL works in the water tracking mode, the velocity provided by DVL is relative to the current layer and cannot be directly used to suppress the divergence of SINS errors. Therefore, the estimation and compensation of the ocean current velocity play an essential role in improving navigation positioning accuracy. In recent works, ocean currents are considered constant over a short term in small areas. In the common KF algorithm with the ocean current as a state vector, the current velocity cannot be estimated because the current velocity and the SINS velocity error are coupled. In this paper, two virtual metrology filter (VMF) methods are proposed for estimating the velocity of ocean currents based on the properties that the currents remain unchanged at the adjacent moments. New measurement equations are constructed to decouple the current velocity and the SINS velocity error, respectively. Simulations and lake tests show that both proposed methods are effective in estimating the current velocity, and each has its advantages in estimating the ocean current velocity or the misalignment angle.

Resilience of plant-insect interactions in an oak lineage through Quaternary climate change
2015
Plant-insect interactions are vital for structuring terrestrial ecosystems. It is still unclear how climate change in geological time might have shaped plant-insect interactions leading to modern ecosystems. We investigated the effect of Quaternary climate change on plant-insect interactions by observing insect herbivory on leaves of an evergreen sclerophyllous oak lineage (Quercus section Heterobalanus, HET) from a late Pliocene flora and eight living forests in southwestern China. Among the modern HET populations investigated, the damage diversity tends to be higher in warmer and wetter climates. Even though the climate of the fossil flora was warmer and wetter than modern sample sites, the damage diversity is lower in the fossil flora than in modern HET populations. Eleven out of 18 damage types in modern HET populations are observed in the fossil flora. All damage types in the fossil flora, except for one distinctive gall type, are found in modern HET populations. These results indicate that Quaternary climate change did not cause extensive extinction of insect herbivores in HET forests. The accumulation of a more diverse herbivore fauna over time supports the view of plant species as evolutionary “islands” for colonization and turnover of insect species.

Plastid phylogenomics and fossil evidence provide new insights into the evolutionary complexity of the ‘woody clade’ in Saxifragales
2024
Background
The “woody clade” in Saxifragales (WCS), encompassing four woody families (Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Daphniphyllaceae, and Hamamelidaceae), is a phylogenetically recalcitrant node in the angiosperm tree of life, as the interfamilial relationships of the WCS remain contentious. Based on a comprehensive sampling of WCS genera, this study aims to recover a robust maternal backbone phylogeny of the WCS by analyzing plastid genome (plastome) sequence data using Bayesian inference (BI), maximum likelihood (ML), and maximum parsimony (MP) methods, and to explore the possible causes of the phylogenetic recalcitrance with respect to deep relationships within the WCS, in combination with molecular and fossil evidence.
Results
Although the four WCS families were identically resolved as monophyletic, the MP analysis recovered different tree topologies for the relationships among Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, and Daphniphyllaceae from the ML and BI phylogenies. The fossil-calibrated plastome phylogeny showed that the WCS underwent a rapid divergence of crown groups in the early Cretaceous (between 104.79 and 100.23 Ma), leading to the origin of the stem lineage ancestors of Altingiaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Daphniphyllaceae, and Hamamelidaceae within a very short time span (∼4.56 Ma). Compared with the tree topology recovered in a previous study based on nuclear genome data, cytonuclear discordance regarding the interfamilial relationships of the WCS was detected.
Conclusions
Molecular and fossil evidence imply that the early divergence of the WCS might have experienced radiative diversification of crown groups, extensive extinctions at the genus and species levels around the Cretaceous/Paleocene boundary, and ancient hybridization. Such evolutionarily complex events may introduce biases in topological estimations within the WCS due to incomplete lineage sorting, cytonuclear discordance, and long-branch attraction, potentially impacting the accurate reconstruction of deep relationships.

Optimizing energy efficiency in induction skull melting process: investigating the crucial impact of melting system structure
2024
Induction skull melting (ISM) technology could melt metals with avoiding contamination from crucible. A long-standing problem of ISM is that the low charge energy utilization and inhomogeneous fields have obstructed its application in many critical metal materials and manufacturing processes. The present work investigated the problem through the structure optimization strategy and established a numerical electromagnetic-field model to evaluate components’ eddy current loss. Based on the model, the effect of crucible and inductor structure on charge energy utilization, etc. was studied. Furtherly, the charge energy utilization was increased from 27.1 to 45.89% by adjusting the system structure. Moreover, structure modifications are proposed for enhancing electromagnetic intensity and uniformity, charge soft contact and uniform heating. The work constructed a basis for framing new solutions to the problem through ISM device structure optimization.

LEAF MARGIN ANALYSIS: A NEW EQUATION FROM HUMID TO MESIC FORESTS IN CHINA
2010
Leaf margin analysis (LMA) is a widely used method that applies present-day linear correlation between the proportion of woody dicotyledonous species with untoothed leaves (P) and mean annual temperature (MAT) to estimate paleotemperatures from fossil leaf floras. Previous works demonstrate that LMA shows regional constraints and to date, no equation has been modeled directly from Chinese forests. Fifty humid to mesic Chinese forests were chosen to understand the relationship between percentage of untoothed leaf species and MAT in China. Consistent with previous studies, the Chinese data indicate that P shows a strong linear correlation with MAT, but the actual relationship is a little different from those recognized from other regions. Among the several currently used LMA equations, the one resulting from North and Central American and Japanese data, rather than the widely used East Asian LMA equation, yields the closest values to the actual MATs of the Chinese samples (mean absolute error = 1.9 °C). A new equation derived from the Chinese forests is therefore developed, where MAT = 1.038 + 27.6 × P. This study not only demonstrates the similarity of the relationship between P and MAT in the Northern Hemisphere, but also improves the reliability of LMA for paleoclimate reconstructions of Chinese paleofloras.

Distribution of Cenozoic plant relicts in China explained by drought in dry season
2015
Cenozoic plant relicts are those groups that were once widespread in the Northern Hemisphere but are now restricted to some small isolated areas as a result of drastic climatic changes. They are good proxies to study how plants respond to climatic changes since their modern climatic requirements are known. Herein we look at the modern distribution of 65 palaeoendemic genera in China and compare it with the Chinese climatic pattern, in order to find a link between the plant distribution and climate. Central China and Taiwan Island are shown to be diversity centres of Cenozoic relict genera, consistent with the fact that these two regions have a shorter dry season with comparatively humid autumn and spring in China. Species distribution models indicate that the precipitation parameters are the most important variables to explain the distribution of relict genera. The Cenozoic wide-scale distribution of relict plants in the Northern Hemisphere is therefore considered to be linked to the widespread humid climate at that time and the subsequent contraction of their distributional ranges was probably caused by the drying trend along with global cooling.

Background: Ischemic stroke is one of the major emergency diseases leading to death and disability worldwide, characterized by its acute onset and the urgent need for prompt medical intervention to reduce mortality and long-term disability. Chronic terminal internal carotid artery and/or middle cerebral artery occlusion (CTI/MCAO) is an important subtype of intracranial artery occlusive disease. The superficial temporal artery-to-MCA (STA-MCA) bypass has been proposed to improve cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reserve (CVR), potentially enhancing neurological outcomes. However, its safety and efficacy in CTI/MCAO patients remain controversial. Methods: A total of 107 CTI/MCAO patients from Nanjing Brain Hospital, enrolled between July 2019 and June 2022, were divided into surgical and medical treatment groups. Cerebral perfusion and collateral formation were evaluated using pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Modified Rankin scale (mRS) score and complication rates were compared between the two groups. In addition, correlations between Matsushima grades, early-arriving flow proportion (EFP), and lesion-side cerebrovascular (LCBV) scores were analyzed. Results: The surgical group showed significantly lower mRS scores than the medical group (p=0.018), with no significant differences in complication rates at the 6-month follow-up (p=0.861). CBF differed significantly among affected MCA segments (p<0.001), particularly in the insular and opercular regions (M2-M3) (p=0.006). Matsushima grades in unilateral CTI/MCAO patients were negatively correlated with preoperative LCBV scores (γs = −0.468, p=0.005) and EFP (γs = −0.648, p=0.007). EFP demonstrated high accuracy in predicting LCBV scores in CTI/MCAO patients (AUC = 0.902, p=0.004).Conclusion: STA-MCA bypass surgery improved neurological outcomes in CTI/MCAO patients, particularly those with poor preoperative collateral compensation. EFP may serve as a reliable, noninvasive tool for assessing collateral circulation status in this population.

2018
To fabricate metallic 316L/HA (hydroxyapatite) materials which meet the requirements of an implant’s mechanical properties and bioactivity for its function as human bone replacement, selective laser melting (SLM) has been employed in this study to prepare a 316L stainless steel matrix, which was subsequently covered with a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating using the sol-gel method. High density (98.9%) as-printed parts were prepared using a laser power of 230 W and a scanning speed of 800 mm/s. Austenite and residual acicular ferrite existed in the microstructure of the as-printed 316L stainless steel, and the sub-grain was uniform, whose primary dendrite spacing was around 0.35 μm. The as-printed 316L stainless steel showed the highest Vickers hardness, elastic modulus, and tensile strength at ~ (~ means about; same applies below unless stated otherwise) 247 HV, ~214.2 GPa, and ~730 MPa, respectively. The elongation corresponding to the highest tensile strength was ~38.8%. The 316L/HA structure, measured by the Relative Growth Rate (RGR) value, exhibited no cell cytotoxicity, and presented better biocompatibility than the uncoated as-printed and as-cast 316L samples.

Here, melt-extracted Ni- and Fe-based amorphous metallic fibers (AMFs) were annealed below their glass transition temperatures. The tensile behaviors and microstructures of the melt-extracted and the annealed AMF samples were studied. For melt-extracted Ni- and Fe-based samples, the difference of fracture angles can be attributed to their difference of parameter α in the unified tensile fracture criterion. The revolution in the microstructure and mechanical properties induced by annealing treatment has been interpreted in detail. Prolonging the annealing time or increasing the annealing temperature can lead to an increase in fracture stresses of both Ni- and Fe-based AMFs. It was demonstrated that the increase in the fracture stresses of annealed AMFs is caused by the free volume annihilation in annealing processing.

The Magnetocaloric Behaviors of Gd-based Microwire Arrays with Different Curie Temperatures
2022
The desirable table-like magnetocaloric effect (MCE) was obtained by designing a new magnetic bed, which comprises three kinds of Gd-based microwire arrays with different Curie temperatures (TC). The TC interval among these wires is ~10 K. This new magnetic bed shows a smooth ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at ~100 K. In addition, a table-like magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) was obtained, ranging from ~92 K to ~107 K, with a maximum entropy change (−ΔSMmax) of 9.42 J/kgK for a field change (μ0ΔH) of 5 T. Notably, the calculated results of −ΔSM(T) corresponded to the experimental data for μ0ΔH = 5 T, suggesting that a microwire array-based magnetic bed with desirable magnetocaloric response can be designed. In addition, it was shown that a larger table-like temperature range and cooling efficiency can be achieved by increasing the interval of TC among microwire arrays. These important findings indicate that the newly designed magnetic bed is very promising for active magnetic cooling technology.
