This volume examines the development of poetic literacy including the specific processes used by expert poetry readers and professional poets. There is increasing pressure for STEM education to reform in the direction of student-centered learning approaches, active learning, interdisciplinarity, and data-driven evaluations and assessments of student learning. These requirements derive from the need for STEM education to facilitate economic development, national health, technological innovation, and appropriate demographic representation. These contingencies create the need and opportunity for the integration of applied linguistic expertise within STEM education. In this chapter, a senior project officer from a major funding institution, a leading scientist, and a seasoned applied linguist discuss and exemplify the role and conditions in which applied linguistics can facilitate different aspects of STEM education. The Phage Hunting Integrating Research and Education (PHIRE) program is presented as an example of a collaboration that constructed shared, interdisciplinary education projects designed to enhance the program's pedagogical mission.

Scientific Discourse examines the nature of scientific inquiry in the primary school classroom to show how this interacts with early literacy. Through an examination of the texts used and produced by pupils studying science the author shows how what is at work in this context of scientific discourse is actually multiliteracy. The teacher aids the pupils' learning using different forms of literacy spread across the spoken word, written text, visual text and physical action. The result of this diverse approach is a growth not only in scientific knowledge, but basic literacy. The book provides a theoretical introduction to developmental literacy theory, current positions of science education and advanced theories of multiliteracy and genre theory. In this chapter, Grace V.S. Chin explores how recent studies of creative writing have moved away from prevailing ideas of individual creative acts to explore the social dimensions of creativity. Using a sociocultural approach, Chin examines the interrelated notions of identity, language, and place by investigating L2 creative writing, specifically playwriting, as a social, learning process within the postcolonial, bilingual, and sociocultural contexts of Brunei Darussalam. The theories of Vygotsky and Foucault are expanded on to show how Creative Writing (SL) classes are interactional spaces where students actively engage each other as a community of writers; in the process, they co-construct both knowledges and identities as emergent L2 writers.
