Primary retropharyngeal leiomyosarcoma in a young cat
Case summary An Oriental Shorthair cat, aged 1 year and 6 months, developed progressive stridor and a palpable right ventral cervical mass. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass was inconclusive, while thoracic radiography and CT showed no evidence of metastasis. There was initial improvement in stridor with oral doxycycline and prednisolone treatment, but it recurred 4 weeks later and excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathology with immunohistochemistry diagnosed leiomyosarcoma with incomplete surgical margins. Adjunctive radiation therapy was declined. Repeated physical examination and CT 7 months postoperatively documented no evidence of mass recurrence. Relevance and novel information This is the first reported case of retropharyngeal leiomyosarcoma in a young cat with no evidence of local reoccurrence 7 months following an excisional biopsy.
A US perspective on closing the carbon cycle to defossilize difficult-to-electrify segments of our economy
Electrification to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions is essential to mitigate climate change. However, a substantial portion of our manufacturing and transportation infrastructure will be difficult to electrify and/or will continue to use carbon as a key component, including areas in aviation, heavy-duty and marine transportation, and the chemical industry. In this Roadmap, we explore how multidisciplinary approaches will enable us to close the carbon cycle and create a circular economy by defossilizing these difficult-to-electrify areas and those that will continue to need carbon. We discuss two approaches for this: developing carbon alternatives and improving our ability to reuse carbon, enabled by separations. Furthermore, we posit that co-design and use-driven fundamental science are essential to reach aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets. To achieve net-zero carbon emissions, we must close the carbon cycle for industries that are difficult to electrify. Developing the needed science to provide carbon alternatives and non-fossil carbon will accelerate advances towards defossilization.
The role of London Forces in Defining Noncentrosymmetric Order of High Dipole Moment-High Hyperpolarizability Chromophores in Electrically Poled Polymeric Thin Films
Graphs of second harmonic generation coefficients and electro-optic coefficients (measured by ellipsometry, attenuated total reflection, and two-slit interference modulation) as a function of chromophore number density (chromophore loading) are experimentally observed to exhibit maxima for polymers containing chromophores characterized by large dipole moments and polarizabilities. Modified London theory is used to demonstrated that this behavior can be attributed to the competition of chromophore-applied electric field and chromophore-chromophore electrostatic interactions. The comparison of theoretical and experimental data explains why the promise of exceptional macroscopic second-order optical nonlinearity predicted for organic materials has not been realized and suggests routes for circumventing current limitations to large optical nonlinearity. The results also suggest extensions of measurement and theoretical methods to achieve an improved understanding of intermolecular interactions in condensed phase materials including materials prepared by sequential synthesis and block copolymer methods.
Nietzsche's Thumbscrew: Honesty as Virtue and Value Standard
Much has been made of the apparent tensions in Nietzsche's ethical and metaethical views. In this essay I examine a kind of value standard available to Nietzsche that is present in his work. I offer an interpretation of honesty as both a Nietzschean virtue and a means of ethical assessment. Despite Nietzsche's well-known criticisms of truth, he upholds honesty as the only remaining virtue of his free spirits. Honesty has been treated in the literature primarily in the contexts of truth or life affirmation, but I argue that we should instead recognize honesty as a virtue within the context of valuing. I defend honesty as a distinct kind of truthfulness and sincerity involving what I call confrontation. The seeds of Nietzsche's mature view are first evident in his work on tragedy, then developed further in Zarathustra, ultimately revealing a constraint on valuing that is essential to Nietzsche's broader normative projects.
Playing, Valuing, and Living: Examining Nietzsche’s Playful Response to Nihilism
Play is usually dened in contrast to the serious tasks of everyday life, as a form of frivolity that offers escape from the real world. Yet Friedrich Nietzsche claims that play is serious work, and he holds that it should not be relegated to the realm of children or limited to trivial matters. In Beyond Good and Evil Nietzsche even claims for play a paradoxical role in human development: Human maturity: this means rediscovering the seriousness we had towards play when we were children (BGE 94).1
Collision tumour of two nodal metastases (adenocarcinoma and mast cell tumour) in a dog
An 11‐year‐old female neutered Labrador retriever was referred for a large vulvar mast cell tumour that extended into the vagina. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged right medial iliac lymph node, and cytology of the node was consistent with an endocrine/neuroendocrine tumour. An approximately 1.5‐cm right anal sac mass was palpated. Medial iliac lymphadenectomy via ventral celiotomy, right anal sacculectomy and marginal vulvar mass resection were performed. Histopathology was consistent with right anal sac adenocarcinoma, vulvar mast cell tumour, and the right medial iliac lymph node showed a metastatic collision of both the adenocarcinoma and mast cell tumour cell populations. Adjunctive chemotherapy and radiotherapy were recommended to address the risk of local recurrence and further metastasis but were declined by the owner. The dog remains alive and asymptomatic with no visible evidence of recurrence 14 months after initial presentation.
