Antifundamentalism in Modern America
2017
David Harrington Watt'sAntifundamentalism in Modern Americagives us a pathbreaking account of the role that the fear of fundamentalism has played-and continues to play-in American culture. Fundamentalism has never been a neutral category of analysis, and Watt scrutinizes the various political purposes that the concept has been made to serve. In 1920, the conservative Baptist writer Curtis Lee Laws coined the word \"fundamentalists.\" Watt examines the antifundamentalist polemics of Harry Emerson Fosdick, Talcott Parsons, Stanley Kramer, and Richard Hofstadter, which convinced many Americans that religious fundamentalists were almost by definition backward, intolerant, and anti-intellectual and that fundamentalism was a dangerous form of religion that had no legitimate place in the modern world.
For almost fifty years, the concept of fundamentalism was linked almost exclusively to Protestant Christians. The overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the establishment of an Islamic republic led to a more elastic understanding of the nature of fundamentalism. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Americans became accustomed to using fundamentalism as a way of talking about Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists, as well as Christians. Many Americans came to see Protestant fundamentalism as an expression of a larger phenomenon that was wreaking havoc all over the world.Antifundamentalism in Modern Americais the first book to provide an overview of the way that the fear of fundamentalism has shaped U.S. culture, and it will lead readers to rethink their understanding of what fundamentalism is and what it does.
Uncompromising Honor
\"The Solarian League's navy counts its superdreadnoughts by the thousands. Not even they know how large their economy is. And for hundreds of years they have borne the banner of human civilization. But the 'Mandarins' who rule today's league are corrupt, venal, accountable to no one and have decided that the Star Kingdom of Manticore must be destroyed. Honor Harrington has worn the Star Kingdom's uniform for over a half a century and now has a seat on the highest military and political councils of the Grand Alliance. Very few people know war the way Honor does. Very few have lost as many men and women, as many friends, as much family, as she has. Yet despite that, hers has been a voice of caution. But they have finally killed too many of the people Honor loves. Hers is the voice of caution and compromise no longer and the galaxy is about to see something it has never imagined. The Salamander is coming for the Solarian League and Hell is coming in her wake\"-- Provided by publisher.
Bible-carrying Christians : conservative Protestants and social power
This book focuses on the relationship between conservative Protestants and social power in the U.S. The book, which is particularly concerned with which sorts of power relationships seem natural and which do not, is based on fieldwork (conducted in the early 1990s), in three Philadelphia churches: Oak Grove Church, Philadelphia Mennonite Fellowship, and the Philadelphia Church of Christ. The data drawn from that fieldwork suggests that in the early 1990s, Bible‐carrying Christian churches tended to naturalize (to various degrees) the authority of heterosexuals and men. The data also suggested that under certain (relatively rare) circumstances Bible‐carrying Christian churches denaturalized the authority of ministers, corporations, and nation‐states.
Australian TV news
2013,2014
Australian TV News explores the important role of entertainment in Australian television news over the past decade. Through the use of textual analysis, industry interviews and audience research, it argues that 'infotainment' and satire are increasingly becoming significant methods of informing audiences about serious news issues. The work examines the changing relationships between television news, politics and everyday people, finding that these often humorous programs are used by audiences as sources of political information and fact, and this book challenges traditional assumptions about what form TV news should take and what functions it ought to serve.
Tales of honor. Volume 2, Bred to kill
An amazing new entry in the Honorverse mythos, Interesting...stylistically sound. The first ever original comic book tale set in David Weber's Honorverse! Following the success of Tales of Honor vol 1, which explored the origins of Weber's military heroine, the eponymous Honor Harrington, this second volume finds Honor is a never-before-seen adventure. In the absence of actual shore leave, it's up to Honor and her crewmen, officers Horace Harkness and Scotty Tremaine, with the help of her pet Treecat, Nimitz, to infiltrate Eros and uncover a mystery of galactic proportions! But what they find will extend far beyond a simple kidnapping, and will push Honor and her crew to their absolute limits...and then some. Written by Matt Hawkins and Dan Wickline, with art from rising star Linda Sejic, this is one series that Scifi-fans - familiar with the Honorverse or not - won't want to miss. It collects Tales of Honor: Bred to Kill numbered 0-4.

The Protestant Ethic Debate
2001
Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism continues to be one of the most influential texts in the sociology of modern Western societies. Although Weber never produced the further essays with which he intended to extend the study, he did complete four lengthy Replies to reviews of the text by two German historians. Written between 1907 and 1910, the Replies offer a fascinating insight into Weber’s intentions in the original study, and the present volume is the first complete translation of all four Replies in English.
