Matter radius of the doubly-magic$$^{56}$$ Ni measured in a storage ring
The matter radius of the doubly magic$$^{56}$$56 Ni was extracted from a measurement of the differential cross section by employing, for the first time, elastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics with a radioactive beam at$$E_{kin}=390.2$$E kin = 390.2  MeV/nucleon circulating in a storage ring and passing an internal hydrogen gas-jet target with a revolution frequency of around 2 MHz. The novel experimental scheme is based on UHV-compatible Si detectors operated as active vacuum windows, which were implemented in the ESR storage ring at GSI. A matter radius$$^{1/2}=3.74^{+0.03}_{-0.06}$$< r m 2 > 1 / 2 = 3 . 74 - 0.06 + 0.03  fm was extracted for the doubly-magic self-conjugate nucleus$$^{56}$$56 Ni.
Commissioning of the CALIFA Barrel Calorimeter of the R3B Experiment at FAIR
CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the R3B experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy charged particles and γ-rays in inverse kinematics direct reactions. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration of Barrel and Forward End-Cap pieces. The CALIFA Barrel consists of 1952 detection units made of CsI(Tl) long-shaped scintillator crystals, and it is being commissioned during the Phase0 experiments at FAIR. The first setup for the CALIFA Barrel commissioning is presented here. Results of detector performance with γ-rays are obtained, and show that the system fulfills the design requirements.

Nuclear reactions in the storage ring ESR with EXL
The EXL project aims to study nuclear structure by direct reactions in inverse kinematics at the storage rings of the future FAIR facility. In this contribution, we present the status of the project: the technical implementation at the ESR at GSI and preliminary results of the EXL campaign in 2012, the first using also a radioactive beam.
Lifetime measurement in neutron-rich A~100 nuclei
Lifetimes of excited states of the 98;100;102 Zr nuclei were measured by using the Generalized Centroid Difference Method. The nuclei of interest were populated via neutron-induced fission of 241 Pu and 235 U during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. The obtained lifetimes were used to calculate the B(E2) transition strengths and β deformation parameters which were then compared with the recent theoretical predictions obtained with Monte Carlo Shell Model.

The tetratricopeptide repeat domains of human, tobacco, and nematode PEX5 proteins are functionally interchangeable with the analogous native domain for peroxisomal import of PTS1-terminated proteins in yeast
In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, beta-oxidation of fatty acids is compartmentalised in peroxisomes. Most yeast peroxisomal matrix proteins contain a type 1C-terminal peroxisomal targeting signal (PTS1) consisting of the tripeptide SKL or a conservative variant thereof. PTS1-terminated proteins are imported by Pex5p, which interacts with the targeting signal via a tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) domain. Yeast cells devoid of Pex5p are unable to import PTS1-containing proteins and cannot degrade fatty acids. Here, the PEX5-TPR domains from human, tobacco, and nematode were inserted into a TPR-less yeast Pex5p construct to generate Pex5p chimaeras. These hybrid proteins were examined for functional complementation of the pex5delta mutant phenotype. Expression of the Pex5p chimaeras in pex5delta mutant cells restored peroxisomal import of PTS1-terminated proteins. Chimaera expression also re-established degradation of oleic acid, allowing growth on this fatty acid as a sole carbon source. We conclude that, in the context of Pex5p chimaeras, the human, tobacco, and nematode Pex5p-TPR domains are functionally interchangeable with the native domain for the peroxisomal import of yeast proteins terminating with canonical PTS1s. Non-conserved yeast PTS1s, such as HRL and HKL, did not interact with the tobacco PEX5-TPR domain in the two-hybrid system. HRL occurs at the C-terminus of the peroxisomal protein Eci1p, which is required for growth on unsaturated fatty acids. Although mutant pex5delta cells expressing a yeast/tobacco Pex5p chimaera failed to import a GFP-Eci1p reporter protein, they were able to grow on oleic acid. We reason that this is due to a cryptic PTS in native Eci1p that can function in a redundant system with the C-terminal HRL.
Leveraging electronic medical records to evaluate a computerized decision support system for staphylococcus bacteremia
Infectious disease specialists (IDS) improve outcomes of patients with Staphylococcus bacteremia, but immediate IDS access is not always guaranteed. We investigated whether a care-integrated computerized decision support system (CDSS) can safely enhance the standard of care (SOC) for these patients. We conducted a multicenter, noninferiority, interventional stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial relying on the data integration centers at five university hospitals. By this means, electronic medical records can be used for part of the trial documentation. We analyzed 5056 patients from 134 wards ( Staphylococcus aureus (SAB): n  = 812, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS): n  = 4244) and found that the CDSS was noninferior to the SOC for hospital mortality in all patients. Noninferiority regarding the 90-day mortality/relapse in SAB patients was not observed and there was no evidence for differences in vancomycin usage among CoNS patients. Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C
We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C at the R3B setup in a first campaign within FAIR Phase 0 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The goal was to improve the accuracy of the experimental data for the 12C(α,γ)16O fusion reaction and to reach lower center-ofmass energies than measured so far. The experiment required beam intensities of 109 16O ions per second at an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon. The rare case of Coulomb breakup into 12C and 4He posed another challenge: The magnetic rigidities of the particles are so close because of the same mass-to-charge-number ratio A/Z = 2 for 16O, 12C and 4He. Hence, radical changes of the R3B setup were necessary. All detectors had slits to allow the passage of the unreacted 16O ions, while 4He and 12C would hit the detectors' active areas depending on the scattering angle and their relative energies. We developed and built detectors based on organic scintillators to track and identify the reaction products with sufficient precision.
Long-term results of sentinel node biopsy diagnostics in penile carcinoma : Dynamic sentinel node biopsy in cases with nonpalpable lymph nodes in the groin
Dynamic sentinel node biopsy (DSNB) has been recommended in the EAU guidelines for several years as a minimally invasive method for lymph node staging in patients with penile carcinoma and nonpalpable lymph nodes. However, due to the high methodological demands and the primarily unreliable results, this method is rarely used in Germany. The aim of this study was to establish the reliability and morbidity of this method. The frequency of lymph node recurrent disease and complications were prospectively recorded in patients with initially nonpalpable inguinal lymph nodes and histologically negative sentinel lymph nodes. Quality criteria were the false negative rate (percentage of lymph node recurrence in negative procedures) and the morbidity rate. Inguinal regions with palpable lymph nodes and/or evidence of metastases were not considered. The study included 37 patients with histologically negative sentinel lymph nodes in 63 groins with nonpalpable inguinal lymph nodes. There were 21 T1(a/b) stages, 10 T2, and 6 T3 stages. Tumor differentiation was good in 4, moderate in 26, and poor in 7 patients. During a median follow-up of 52 months (range 1-131 months), we observed a bilateral lymph node recurrence in 1 patient and a conservatively managed prolonged lymphorrhea in another patient. Per inguinal region the false-negative rate was 3.2 % and the morbidity rate was 1.6 %; seen per patient the rates were both 2.7 %. DSNB is a reliable method of lymph node staging in patients with penile carcinoma and nonpalpable inguinal lymph nodes. The high degree of reliability in combination with the low morbidity justifies the higher methodical complexity of this method.
