New business creation : systems for institutionalized radical innovation management
Established companies are facing an increasingly dynamic and globalized competitive environment. Radical innovations are considered a means to escape this trend. In particular, it is desirable for established companies to institutionalize systems to repeatedly create new business based on radical innovations ('New Business Creation', 'NBC'). In six in-depth case studies, Philipp Hartmann identifies design variables for NBC systems and explores related performance measurement activities. In a subsequent cross-case comparison, idiosyncratic observations are synthesized into thirteen propositions. Moreover, two structurally different approaches to NBC are identified and discussed. In addition, the present research thoroughly studies performance measurement activities in the context of NBC activities and finds that they are an essential component that has been insufficiently addressed by existing theory. Contribution of serum lipids and cholesterol cellular metabolism in lung cancer development and progression

Neoplasms of the lungs are the leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality worldwide. Although immunotherapy has increased the overall survival of patients with lung cancer, there is the need to improve this treatment. At this regard, blood lipid levels are thought to be linked to cancer risk and thus a preventive intervention through regulation of the nutrition of patients with lung cancer is gaining much attention. In this study, we therefore asked about the contribution of serum lipids and cholesterol cellular metabolism in lung cancer development and progression. We measured different serum lipids and analyzed cholesterol synthesis enzymes 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and acetyl-coenzyme A cholesterol acetyltransferase 1 (ACAT1) as well as the cholesterol cellular export protein ATP-binding cassette (ABC) A-1 mRNA by quantitative PCR (qPCR) in the control and tumoral regions of post-surgery lung tissues to analyze the accumulation of cholesterol in cancer cells in a cohort of patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). We found that triglycerides in serum directly correlated with the body mass index (BMI) in patients with LUAD. By contrast, we found that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol inversely correlated with the BMI, C-reactive protein (CRP) and overall survival and total cholesterol inversely correlated with the tumor diameter, serum CRP and overall survival in these LUAD patients. Functionally, the role of cholesterol is indispensable for the growth and development of normal animal cells where it is tightly regulated. Excess of cellular cholesterol regulated by HMGCR is converted to cholesteryl esters by the enzyme ACAT1 and exported extracellularly by the cholesterol transporter ABCA1. Here we found HMGCR and ACAT1 upregulated and ABCA1 downregulated in the lung’s tumoral region of our LUAD cohort, indicating cholesterol dysregulated cellular export in lung tumor cells.

Real Estate Markets and Macroprudential Policy in Europe

Boom-bust cycles in real estate markets have been major factors in systemic financial crises and therefore need to be at the forefront of macroprudential policy. The geographically differentiated nature of real estate market fluctuations implies that these policies need to be granular across regions and countries. Before the financial crisis that started in 2007 property markets were overvalued in a range of European countries, but much like in other constituencies active policies addressing this were an exception. An increasing number of studies suggest that borrower-based regulatory policies, such as reductions in loan-to-value or debt-to-income limits, can be effective in leaning against real estate booms. But many of the new macroprudential policy authorities in Europe do not have clear powers to determine them. Moreover, the cross-border spillovers they may give rise to suggest the establishment of a well-defined macroprudential coordination mechanism for the single European market.

Site-selective episulfonium formation on protein surfaces

Covalent protein conjugation facilitates the study of biological processes and the synthesis of therapeutic biomacromolecules. A method that uses vinyl thianthrenium reagents for the site-selective formation of highly reactive episulfonium species on proteins is demonstrated. These in situ-formed intermediates react with diverse nucleophiles, providing access to protein conjugates in one step without purification.

The European Central Bank’s Monetary Policy during Its First 20 Years

On June 1, 2018, the European Central Bank (ECB) celebrated its 20th anniversary. This paper provides a comprehensive view of the ECB’s monetary policy over these two decades. The first section gives a chronological account of the macroeconomic and monetary policy developments in the euro area since the adoption of the euro in 1999, going through four cyclical phases “conditioning” ECB monetary policy. We describe the monetary policy decisions from the ECB’s perspective and against the background of its evolving monetary policy strategy and framework. We also highlight a number of the key, critical issues that were the subject of debate. The second section contains various assessments. We analyze the achievement of the price stability mandate and developments in the ECB’s credibility, and we also investigate the ECB’s interest rate decisions through the lens of a simple empirical interest rate reaction function. Finally, we present the ECB’s framework for thinking about nonstandard monetary policy measures and review the evidence on their effectiveness. One of the main themes of the paper is how the ECB utilized its monetary policy to respond to the challenges posed by the European twin financial and sovereign debt crises and the subsequent slow economic recovery, making use of its relatively wide range of instruments, defining new ones where necessary, and developing the strategic underpinnings of its policy framework.

Capturing value from big data – a taxonomy of data-driven business models used by start-up firms

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to derive a taxonomy of business models used by start-up firms that rely on data as a key resource for business, namely data-driven business models (DDBMs). By providing a framework to systematically analyse DDBMs, the study provides an introduction to DDBM as a field of study.
Design/methodology/approach
To develop the taxonomy of DDBMs, business model descriptions of 100 randomly chosen start-up firms were coded using a DDBM framework derived from literature, comprising six dimensions with 35 features. Subsequent application of clustering algorithms produced six different types of DDBM, validated by case studies from the study’s sample.
Findings
The taxonomy derived from the research consists of six different types of DDBM among start-ups. These types are characterised by a subset of six of nine clustering variables from the DDBM framework.
Practical implications
A major contribution of the paper is the designed framework, which stimulates thinking about the nature and future of DDBMs. The proposed taxonomy will help organisations to position their activities in the current DDBM landscape. Moreover, framework and taxonomy may lead to a DDBM design toolbox.
Originality/value
This paper develops a basis for understanding how start-ups build business models capture value from data as a key resource, adding a business perspective to the discussion of big data. By offering the scientific community a specific framework of business model features and a subsequent taxonomy, the paper provides reference points and serves as a foundation for future studies of DDBMs.

As research institutions, universities themselves are subject to necessary changes, when it comes to transformation processes towards greater sustainability. Even though the necessary measures are known, their implementation is (un-) expectedly difficult and complex. In the “BreGoS - Bremen Goes Sustainable” project, all public universities in the federal state of Bremen cooperate to jointly enhance this transformation. The university campuses themselves are becoming objects of study. The Neustadtswall campus of Bremen University of Applied Sciences e.g. is being analysed based on selected sustainability assessment criteria - mobility, biodiversity and quality of stay - and serves as a place for experiments. Model projects are being initiated and implemented together with students, and their effectiveness is being measured and evaluated using the certification criteria of DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). The evaluation of the “Alte Neustadt” bike model district, completed in 2019, shows that facilities such as air pumps, workshops and bicycle parking spaces significantly increase sustainability on campus. Sustainability evaluations in the areas of biodiversity and quality of stay show the quantifiable effects of completed and intended university development projects, as well as student projects that were developed and implemented as part of BreGoS. The results confirm that the implementation of sustainability measures, no matter how small, leads to noticeable and measurable improvements within the campus. In addition, their inherent multiplier effect allows them to be transferred to larger scales, e.g. to neighbouring buildings or the surrounding neighbourhood.

Consideration of an embedded system’s timing behavior and power consumption at system-level is an ambitious task. Sophisticated tools and techniques exist for power and timing estimations of individual components such as custom hard- and software as well as IP components. In this article we present an ESL framework for timing and power aware virtual system prototyping of heterogeneous MPSoCs consisting of software, custom hardware and 3rd party IP components. In virtual platform, previously only used for functional software verification, our proposed timed value streams enable a hierarchical and composable power model. Our proposed ESL framework supports the integration of a broad range of system-level timing and power models into virtual platform. Power and timing models can either be generated from a functional C/C++ description or include state-machine based power models to existing functional and timed virtual platform (black-box) components. Our timed value stream based power model supports the run-time analysis of different platform power management strategies with configurable temporal abstraction, supporting simulation speed and accuracy trade-offs. This work evaluates timing and power back-annotation and power state machine based approaches with timed value streams in two use-cases: An MP3 decoder, compared to a power-aware ISS and gate-level simulation, and an FPGA based many-core architecture against measurements. Finally, the simulation time overhead of the proposed stream based power model is analyzed and discussed.

The discrete element method (DEM) is the most dominant method for the numerical prediction of dynamic behaviour at grain or particle scale. Nevertheless, due to its discontinuous nature, the DEM is inherently unable to describe microscopic features of individual bodies which can be considered as continuous bodies. To incorporate microscopic features, efficient numerical coupling of the DEM with a continuous method is generally necessary. Thus, a generalised multi-scale PD–DEM framework is developed in this work. In the developed framework, meshfree discretised Peridynamics (PD) is used to describe intra-particle forces within bodies to capture microscopic features. The inter-particle forces of rigid bodies are defined by the DEM whereas a hybrid approach is applied at the PD–DEM interface. In addition, a staggered multi-scale time integration scheme is formulated to allow for an efficient numerical treatment of both methods. Validation examples are presented and the applicability of the developed framework to capture the characteristics mixtures with rigid and deformable bodies is shown.
