This study addresses the urgent need for culturally sensitive cognitive assessments in Egypt by validating an adapted version of Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) to the Egyptian context. This version is to be used as a part of the Egyptian Aging Survey (AL-SEHA). We enrolled 300 participants aged 55 + from diverse backgrounds and meticulously adapted the HCAP for Egypt's linguistic and cultural context. Demonstrating strong reliability and validity (sensitivity 87.6%, specificity 89.2%, accuracy 89.7%), the Egyptian HCAP effectively identified cognitive impairment. Integrated into the AL-SEHA, this validated HCAP offers valuable insights on cognitive function decline in Egypt's aging population. Our findings not only contribute to global understanding of cognitive health but also set a precedent for future cross-cultural HCAP validations, informing policies and early diagnosis for dementia care.

A novel compound was synthesized by the reaction of the amino group of the chitosan with the formyl group of pyrano[3,2-c]quinoline-3-carboxaldehyde moiety, which produced chitosan modified with a Schiff base (chitosan Schiff base). The structure of the newly prepared composite was elucidated. Chitosan Schiff base was used to remove the textile anionic remazol red (RR) dye from wastewater. The kinetic data and adsorption isotherm were best fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated. Chitosan Schiff base resulted in 100% removal of carcinogenic dye at 2 min only with qm 344.8 mg/g, and may do the same for other anionic reactive dyes, thus avoiding secondary pollution.

Phylogenetic comparative analysis: Chemical and biological features of caseins (alpha-S-1, alpha-S-2, beta- and kappa-) in domestic dairy animals
2022
Caseins determine the physicochemical, physiological, and biological characteristics of milk. Four caseins—alpha-S-1, alpha-S-2, beta, and kappa—were analyzed phylogenetically and in silico and characterized regarding chemical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant features in five dairy animals: Arabian camels, sheep, goats, cattle, and water buffalos. The sequence of full-length amino acids of the four caseins for the five species was retracted from the NCBI GenBank database. Multiple sequence alignment is used to examine further the candidate sequences for phylogenetic analysis using Clustal X and NJ-Plot tools. The results revealed that sheep and goats possess strong similarities (98.06%) because of their common ancestor. The same was observed with cattle and water buffalos (96.25%). The Arabian camel was located in a single subclade due to low similarity in casein residues and compositions with other dairy animals. Protein modeling showed that alpha-S1- and alpha-S2-caseins possess the highest number of phosphoserine residues. The in silico computed chemical properties showed that β-casein recorded highest hydrophobicity index and lowest basic amino acid content, while α-S2-casein showed the opposite. The computed biological parameters revealed that α-S2-casein presented the highest bactericidal stretches. Only Arabian camel β-casein and k-casein showed one bactericidal stretches. The analysis also revealed that β-casein, particularly in Arabian camels, possesses the highest antioxidant activity index. These results support the importance of the bioinformatics resources to determine milk casein micelles' chemical and biological activities.

Dementia poses a significant global health challenge, with increasing impact on individuals and healthcare systems. This study aims to investigate the metabolic profiles of clinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) patients in Egypt, seeking to identify connections between metabolic disruptions and environmental factors. Utilizing serum samples from 61 AD patients and 76 VaD patients compared to 100 healthy controls, the research employed untargeted LC-MS and generalized regression analysis. The findings revealed significant alterations in 59 metabolites in AD patients and 69 in VaD patients, including environmental contaminants. Additionally, pathway enrichment analysis indicated distinct metabolic pathways affected in each group, such as amino acid metabolism in AD and purine metabolism in VaD. This research provides insights into the biological pathways and environmental agents linked to dementia, highlighting the need for diverse populations in metabolomic studies to improve prevention and intervention strategies globally.
