From Wu Xun to Lu Xun
This article focuses on Zhao Dan’s (1915–1980) career in film after 1949 to investigate a specific type of stardom unique to Mao Zedong’s China (1949–1976). We argue that this new stardom was similar to what conventionally defines stardom, but with an added political dimension: Zhao Dan’s acquisition of high political standing in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). To arrive at a fuller understanding of the state–artist relationship in the PRC, this article challenges the paradigm of accommodation and resistance between the tyrannical state and subordinated artists, which presupposes a subjectivity or selfhood on the part of artists that pre-existed and was maintained against the intrusive hegemonic ideologies of the state. Instead, we underscore that the making of Zhao Dan’s subjectivity in the PRC—his subjectivity-in-stardom in this case—was a dynamic process, a “becoming.” Zhao Dan’s checkered career indicates that he not only acclimated himself to the ever-changing political atmosphere of Mao-era China but also sought to benefit from it.
Quantifying Quantum Coherence Using Machine Learning Methods
Quantum coherence is a crucial resource in numerous quantum processing tasks. The robustness of coherence provides an operational measure of quantum coherence, which can be calculated for various states using semidefinite programming. However, this method depends on convex optimization and can be time-intensive, especially as the dimensionality of the space increases. In this study, we employ machine learning techniques to quantify quantum coherence, focusing on the robustness of coherence. By leveraging artificial neural networks, we developed and trained models for systems with different dimensionalities. Testing on data samples shows that our approach substantially reduces computation time while maintaining strong generalizability.
Working the system : motion picture, filmmakers, and subjectivities in Mao-era China, 1949-1966
In 'Working the System' Qiliang He inquired into the making of the new citizenry in Mao-era China (1949-1976) by studying five preeminent Shanghai-based filmmakers. These case studies shed light on how individuals' subjectivities took shape in the cinematic arena under a new sociopolitical system after 1949. He suggests that a filmmaker's subjectivity was not fixed or stable but constantly in flux, requiring a host of 'subjectivizing practices' to (re)shape and consolidate it. These filmmakers endeavored to reap maximal benefits from Mao's sociopolitical system and minimize the disadvantages that would make them victims under the system.
A comparison of reinforcement learning models of human spatial navigation
Reinforcement learning (RL) models have been influential in characterizing human learning and decision making, but few studies apply them to characterizing human spatial navigation and even fewer systematically compare RL models under different navigation requirements. Because RL can characterize one’s learning strategies quantitatively and in a continuous manner, and one’s consistency of using such strategies, it can provide a novel and important perspective for understanding the marked individual differences in human navigation and disentangle navigation strategies from navigation performance. One-hundred and fourteen participants completed wayfinding tasks in a virtual environment where different phases manipulated navigation requirements. We compared performance of five RL models (3 model-free, 1 model-based and 1 “hybrid”) at fitting navigation behaviors in different phases. Supporting implications from prior literature, the hybrid model provided the best fit regardless of navigation requirements, suggesting the majority of participants rely on a blend of model-free (route-following) and model-based (cognitive mapping) learning in such navigation scenarios. Furthermore, consistent with a key prediction, there was a correlation in the hybrid model between the weight on model-based learning (i.e., navigation strategy) and the navigator’s exploration vs. exploitation tendency (i.e., consistency of using such navigation strategy), which was modulated by navigation task requirements. Together, we not only show how computational findings from RL align with the spatial navigation literature, but also reveal how the relationship between navigation strategy and a person’s consistency using such strategies changes as navigation requirements change.
A feasibility trial of gamma sensory flicker for patients with prodromal Alzheimer's disease
Introduction We and collaborators discovered that flickering lights and sound at gamma frequency (40 Hz) reduce Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and alter immune cells and signaling in mice. To determine the feasibility of this intervention in humans we tested the safety, tolerability, and daily adherence to extended audiovisual gamma flicker stimulation. Methods Ten patients with mild cognitive impairment due to underlying AD received 1‐hour daily gamma flicker using audiovisual stimulation for 4 or 8 weeks at home with a delayed start design. Results Gamma flicker was safe, tolerable, and adherable. Participants’ neural activity entrained to stimulation. Magnetic resonance imaging and cerebral spinal fluid proteomics show preliminary evidence that prolonged flicker affects neural networks and immune factors in the nervous system. Discussion These findings show that prolonged gamma sensory flicker is safe, tolerable, and feasible with preliminary indications of immune and network effects, supporting further study of gamma stimulation in AD.
Virtual Orientation Overrides Physical Orientation to Define a Reference Frame in Spatial Updating
Previous studies showed that people could use either an egocentric or allocentric reference frame in spatial updating with body-based cues (i.e., physical body movements), but the adopted reference frame was anchored by the physical egocentric front when body-based cues were constrained. A recent study (He et al., 2018) showed that even without body-based cues, the orientation participants initially faced in the virtual environment (VE; initial heading) could be used to establish a reference frame, suggesting that the physical egocentric front could be overridden by a virtual orientation. In the current project, we aimed to: (a) replicate He et al.'s (2018) finding; (b) examine when the reference frame defined by the virtual initial heading was established; and (c) investigate the cognitive processes in establishing the initial heading as a reference frame. In four experiments, we were able to replicate the previous findings and found that the reference frame defined by the initial heading was established during spatial updating. More importantly, the reference frame defined by the initial heading was egocentric and participants did not need to know the orientation of their initial heading at the beginning of spatial updating to be able to use it. We discuss the cognitive processes of reference frame selection in spatial updating when body-based cues are absent.
Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in the general population in Wuzhou, China: a cross-sectional study
Background Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) is a global infectious carcinogen. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in the healthcare-utilizing population undergoing physical examinations at a tertiary hospital in Guangxi, China. Furthermore, gastroscopies were performed on selected participants to scrutinize the endoscopic features of H. pylori infection among asymptomatic individuals. Subjects and methods This study involved 22,769 participants who underwent H. pylori antibody serology screenings at the hospital between 2020 and 2023. The 14C-urea breath test was employed to determine the current H. pylori infection status of 19,307 individuals. Concurrently, 293 participants underwent gastroscopy to evaluate their endoscopic mucosal abnormalities. The risk correlation and predictive value of endoscopic mucosal traits, Hp infection status, and 14C-urea breath test(14C-UBT) outcomes were investigated in subsequent analyses. Results Serum Ure, CagA, and VacA antibodies were detected in 43.3%, 27.4%, and 23.6% of the 22,769 subjects that were screened, respectively. The population exhibited 27.5% and 17.2% positive rates for immune type I and II, respectively. Male participants exhibited lower positive rates of serum antibodies than females. The positive rates and predictive risks of the antibodies increased with age, and the highest positive rates were observed in the 50–60 age subgroup. Based on the outcomes of serological diagnostic techniques, it was observed that the positive rate was significantly higher compared to that of non-serological diagnostic methods, specifically the 14C-UBT results (43.3% versus 14.97%). Among the other cohort ( n  = 19,307), the 14C-UBT revealed a 14.97% positivity rate correlated with age. The 293 individuals who underwent gastroscopy from 14C-UBT Cohort were found to be at an increased risk of a positive breath test if they exhibited duodenal bulb inflammation, diffuse redness, or mucosal edema during the gastroscopy visit. Conclusion The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection is high among the population of Wuzhou, Guangxi, China. Type I H. pylori strains, distinguished by their enhanced virulence, are predominant in this region. In the framework of this population-based study, age has been identified as an independent risk factor for H. pylori infection. Additionally, distinct mucosal manifestations observed during gastroscopy can facilitate the identification of healthcare-utilizing individuals with active H. pylori infections.
