Purpose – Emotional intelligence abilities of university teachers are more likely to establish suitable emotional teaching and learning environments through their teaching practice, thus promoting learning motivation and engagement among students. Despite the emphasis on the importance of teachers’ emotional intelligence abilities in teaching, it continues to be under-acknowledged and underdeveloped. This is evidenced in a few studies reported on the relationship between emotional intelligence and teaching practice particularly in higher education. Guided by the Four-Branch Emotional Intelligence Ability Model, this study aimed to explore the integration of emotional intelligence in teaching practice among university teachers in higher education. Method – A qualitative design of a descriptive case study was applied on 10 university teachers recruited through purposeful sampling. The data gathered from semi-structured interviews conducted with the university teachers was analyzed through five phases of analysis namely; raw categorization of individual interviewees, group categorization of interviewees, raw key points, refined key points and themes. The credibility and trustworthiness of the data were achieved through prolonged engagement, member check, and interrater reliability. Results – Seven themes namely implementation of structured teaching flow, empathetic pedagogical approach, fostering student learning engagement, consideration of students’ emotions, reflection of university teachers’ characteristics, mutual teaching and learning sessions and meaningful learning sessions were generated. Significance – The study demonstrated the importance of developing emotional intelligence abilities among university teachers as these abilities directly influence teaching and learning processes. In fact, these abilities are subconsciously embedded and demonstrated through teaching practice. Thus training on emotional intelligence needs to be developed by including it as one of the competencies required for university teachers.

Perceptions of leadership amongst ethnic malay pupils in residential secondary schools in peninsular malaysia in the context of national development

This thesis examines the perceptions of ethnic Malay pupils in Residential Secondary Schools (RSS) towards leadership in Malaysia. The thesis begins with a discussion on the struggle for leadership in the case of a multi-ethnic society like Malaysia. The thesis examines the circumstances that led to ethnic Malays' struggle for survival' through the policies of education. The thesis acknowledges that the establishment of the RSS was part of the ethnic Malays' struggle for survival' and has since become an important source for ethnic Malay leadership in Malaysia. The research framework has been developed using the concepts of leadership and elitism. In this study, the government has acted as the catalyst for modernising the ethnic Malay community. Thus, the RSS, as a governmental institution, is considered as playing an important role in selecting pupils who are expected to become the future leaders in Malaysia. The major research questions are: (a) what are the perceptions of ethnic Malay pupils towards education?; (b) what is the selection process for ethnic Malay pupils into the RSS?; (c) how do the RSS operate?; (d) What are the perceptions of ethnic Malay pupils towards leadership? and; (e) what are the perceptions of ethnic Malay pupils towards leadership in Malaysia? The quantitative data are analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Chi-Square analysis. The results are presented using frequency tables and significant values for the hypothetical analysis. The qualitative data are analysed using categorization and comparison. The results are presented using frequency tables and rankings. In addition, documentary analysis is used to complement the results in this research. In general, the results of the study show that there are both similarities and differences in the perceptions of pupils towards the importance of education, leadership and in particular leadership in Malaysia. The results show that pupils are indifferent in their perceptions towards education. However, the study would suggest that the role of education for national development, especially for ethnic Malays, may reflect the objectives and aims of the government for future ethnic Malay leadership in Malaysia. The results also show that pupils' perceptions towards leadership in general and leadership in the context of Malaysia are different in terms of their SES, demographic area, and academic achievements. The study suggests that religion, culture and ethnicity are still important factors for leadership in Malaysia.

A novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) or severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), transmitted from person to person, has quickly emerged as the pandemic responsible for the current global health crisis. This infection has been declared a global pandemic, resulting in a concerning number of deaths as well as complications post-infection, primarily among vulnerable groups particularly older people and those with multiple comorbidities. In this article, we review the most recent research on the role of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) fruits (DPFs) to prevent or treat COVID-19 infection. The mechanisms underlying this preventive or therapeutic effect are also discussed in terms of bioactivity potentials in date palm, e.g., antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and hemolytic potential, as well as prospect against COVID-19 disease and the potential product development. Therefore, it can be concluded that regular consumption of DPFs may be associated with a lower risk of some chronic diseases. Indeed, DPFs have been widely used in folk medicine since ancient times to treat a variety of health conditions, demonstrating the importance of DPFs as a nutraceutical and source of functional nourishment. This comprehensive review aims to summarize the majority of the research on DPFs in terms of nutrient content and biologically active components such as phenolic compounds, with an emphasis on their roles in improving overall health as well as the potential product development to ensure consumers’ satisfaction in a current pandemic situation. In conclusion, DPFs can be given to COVID-19 patients as a safe and effective add-on medication or supplement in addition to routine treatments.
