WWII shaped my life
by
Hobbs, Pam
2009
My life was changed forever. Living on England's south coast, I was nine and my sister Iris was 10 at war's outbreak in September l939. That's when a government scheme called 'Operation Pied Piper' saw 3.5 million school children sent from London and other major cities to live in the safety of Britain's countryside. Iris and I went to a coal mining community where, in a one room schoolhouse, we were picked over by prospective 'pretend parents' as they might select fruit at a market. Since my book's publication I have heard from readers who say it has helped them to remember their own 'vaccy' experiences, for the first time in 70 years.

Hobbs, Pam
2007
Yes,\" we answer together, good little Canadians not wanting to offend. He is very apologetic. \"I wonder, please, could you help. . . .\" It seems his shop has just reopened after remodelling. He wants to put a sign overhead. Should it read: \"Grand Opening\" followed by \"Special prices\" or \"Now Open for Business.\" He lifts a cardboard sign that reads \"Grand Opnin\" and asks if we would be so kind as to write it properly on a piece of paper.

CLOSE CALLS, FARAWAY PLACES
by
Hobbs, Pam
2006
On a very wet afternoon my husband and I were driving along England's ever-busy M25 highway, going from Doreset to Essex while on vacation. After four days of rain, roads were slick and grass verges beside them unforgivingly soft. And so, when a huge truck from Holland clipped us while it changed lanes, we went into an involuntary U-turn, ending up on the soggy grass sloping towards a ravine.
