The National Park Service recently hosted a re-enactment of the Battle of Jumonville and illustrated the subsequent events, which necessitated the building of the fort. Realizing the possibility of counterattack, Washington wanted to retreat to Cumberland, Md. Knowing that time would not allow it, he stopped at the Great Meadows, instead, where he built earthworks and otherwise strengthened the fort, which he would call Fort Necessity.
