The modern German political song is a hybrid of high and low culture. With its roots in the birth of mass culture in the 1920s, it employs communicative strategies of popular song. Yet its tendencies toward philosophical, poetic, and musical sophistication reveal intellectual aspirations. This volume looks at the influence of revolutionary artistic traditions in the lyrics and music of the 'Liedermacher' of east and west Germany: the rediscovery of the revolutionary songs of 1848 by the 1960s West German folk revival, the use of the profane \"carnivalesque\" street-ballad tradition by Wolf Biermann and the GDR duo Wenzel & Mensching, the influence of 1920s artistic experimentation on 'Liedermacher' such as Konstantin Wecker, and the legacy of Hanns Eisler's revolutionary song theory. The book also provides an insider perspective on the countercultural scenes of the two Germanys, examining the conditions in which political songs were written and performed. In view of the decline of the political song form since the fall of communism, the book ends with a look at German avant-garde techno's attempt to create a music that challenges conventional cultural perceptions and attitudes. AbstractWe analyse the response function of simple metal clusters considering several theoretical approaches and exploring a large class of momenta and energies. The study is performed on a wide range of cluster sizes to explore the relative weight of the various dominant contributions to the response. We work with Sodium clusters in jellium approximation. The comparison between the various theoretical approaches shows altogether a remarkable consistency. The simple Boson approximation to the response function is furthermore shown to perform remarkably well in spite of its simplicity.Graphical abstract

Mg and Na clusters in a helium matrix

AbstractWe have studied the adsorption properties of liquid 4He on small Mg and Na clusters. The calculation requires three components: a calculation of the cluster structure, a path-integral Monte Carlo calculation of the structure of the surrounding helium, and the determination of the cluster-helium interaction. The two types of clusters are examples for two physically very different situations: small Mg clusters are insulating and their interaction with the surrounding helium is relatively strong. We find for all cases considered here that these clusters are submersed in the helium droplet and reside basically at its center. Na clusters, on the other hand, are conducting down to very small particle numbers. More important, however, is the fact that the Na-He interaction is much weaker than the He-He attraction which causes small Na clusters to reside at the cluster surface.Graphical abstract

Two-dimensional Fermi liquids sustain surprising roton-like plasmons beyond the particle-hole band

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we have investigated the elementary excitations of an isotropic two-dimensional Fermi liquid, 3He adsorbed on graphite. We provide in this article a detailed account of the principles and methods which allowed measuring for the first time inelastic spectra on a liquid monolayer of 3He, a strong neutron absorber. We also summarise the results presented at this Conference, and review our recent experimental and theoretical work on this this interacting many-body system. At low wave-vectors, near the edge of the particle-hole band, a mode identified as the zero-sound excitation by comparison to our theoretical calculations, is found as predicted at energies much lower than in bulk 3He. The mode enters the particle-hole band, where it undergoes Landau damping. Surprisingly, however, intensity is observed in the neutron spectra at wave-vectors larger than twice the Fermi wave-vector. This new branch is interpreted as the high wave-vector continuation of the zero-sound mode, in agreement with the theory. The results open new perspectives in the understanding of the dynamics of correlated fermions.

Superfluidity of helium-4 around a Mg11 cluster

We present results for 4He solvation of a Mg11 cluster obtained with path integral Monte Carlo simulations. Using a pair-wise additive model for the helium-cluster interaction, we calculate energies, 4He densities and the superfluid response of 4He to a rotation of the Mg11 cluster which has symmetric top symmetry. We find a significant superfluid fraction in the first 4He solvation layer around both axes of the cluster well before 4He covers the whole cluster. Based on the superfluid fraction, we estimate that Mg11 in a large 4He nanodroplet would have an effective rotational constant between 60% and 70% of the gas phase rotational constant for rotation about the axis with larger moment of inertia. The dependence of the effective rotational constants on 4He cluster size N is similar to that of previously studied molecules with much larger gas phase rotational constants, with an initial decrease and a turn-around (at N = 13) when part of the 4He density becomes superfluid.
