Transit Oriented Development in New England's regional economies
IRO Transportation is inextricably linked to the economic and social systems working in and around regions. The choices planners and policy makers pursue regarding transportation has significant impacts on people's everyday lives. In the early part of the twenty-first century city, regional and state officials have been actively pursuing commuter rail extension in New England. This thesis explores two commuter rail extension projects in New England and the planning process and policy justifications behind these initiatives. These projects have been designated as \"Transit-Oriented Development\", or \"TOD\". The essence of TOD is to use transit to spur economic growth and opportunity around a particular area. Drawing on demographic and transportation data around the areas affected by these projects this thesis seeks to understand what type of development we may expect to see from pursuing commuter rail projects in New England regional economies.
