Ferrocene and its derivatives, especially ferrocene‐based coordination polymers (Fc‐CPs), offer the benefits of high thermal stability, two stable redox states, fast electron transfer, and excellent charge/discharge efficiency, thus holding great promise for electrochemical applications. Herein, we describe the synthesis and electrochemical applications of Fc‐CPs and reveal how the incorporation of ferrocene units into coordination polymers containing other metals results in unprecedented properties. Moreover, we discuss the usage of Fc‐CPs in supercapacitors, batteries, and sensors as well as further applications of these polymers, for example in electrocatalysts, water purification systems, adsorption/storage systems. Iron strength: The incorporation of ferrocene as an organometallic building block into coordination polymers containing other metals to impart certain properties can afford attractive structures denoted as ferrocene‐based coordination polymers. This Review focuses on the synthesis and electrochemical applications (e. g., supercapacitors, batteries, electrosensors, and electrocatalysts) of these coordination polymers.

Fucoxanthin Attenuates Oxidative Damage by Activating the Sirt1/Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling Pathway to Protect the Kidney from Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Oxidative stress is a key component of renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Fucoxanthin (Fx), a marine carotenoid with enhanced antioxidant capacity, acts as a ROS inhibitor in diseases such as ischemic stroke and acute lung injury. We hypothesized that fucoxanthin could attenuate renal I/R-induced oxidative damage. C57BL/6 mice (n=30) were randomly assigned to sham, IR, IR+DMSO, and IR+Fx (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) groups. The renal I/R injury was induced by clamping the left kidney nephron tip in mice. Fucoxanthin was injected intraperitoneally 24 hours before surgery. Compared with the IR group, pretreatment with fucoxanthin significantly improved renal dysfunction and tissue structural damage and inhibited ROS levels and apoptosis. Consistent results were observed in HK-2 cells. Besides, we found that renal I/R resulted in decreased expression of Sirt1, Nrf2, and HO-1, while fucoxanthin upregulated the expression of Sirt1, Nrf2, and HO-1. The protective effects of fucoxanthin were significantly reversed by EX527 (a selective inhibitor of Sirt1) or si-Sirt1. In conclusion, our study investigated the protective effect of fucoxanthin against renal I/R injury, and the underlying mechanism may be related to the activation of the Sirt1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway by fucoxanthin to attenuate oxidative stress-induced apoptosis.

As a typical self-driven many-particle system far from equilibrium, traffic flow exhibits diverse fascinating non-equilibrium phenomena, most of which are closely related to traffic flow stability and specifically the growth/dissipation pattern of disturbances. However, the traffic theories have been controversial due to a lack of precise traffic data. We have studied traffic flow from a new perspective by carrying out large-scale car-following experiment on an open road section, which overcomes the intrinsic deficiency of empirical observations. The experiment has shown clearly the nature of car-following, which runs against the traditional traffic flow theory. Simulations show that by removing the fundamental notion in the traditional car-following models and allowing the traffic state to span a two-dimensional region in velocity-spacing plane, the growth pattern of disturbances has changed qualitatively and becomes qualitatively or even quantitatively in consistent with that observed in the experiment.

Acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, represents a pivotal research area in dermatology. Although fucoxanthin, a marine-derived carotenoid, displays potent anti-inflammatory activity, its therapeutic potential in acne pathogenesis remains underexplored.
This study investigates fucoxanthin's effects on Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes)-induced auricular inflammation in mice, focusing on its modulation of the IκBα/NF-κB signaling axis and inhibition of NF-κB nuclear translocation.
Inflammation in the ear of mice was induced using a P.acnes injection model. The anti-inflammatory effects of fucoxanthin were verified by evaluating the levels of erythema, pathological damage, and inflammatory factors in the mice ear. An in vitro model was constructed to explore the regulatory mechanism of IkappaBalpha (IκBα)/nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) pathway by fucoxanthin.
Fucoxanthin alleviated P. acnes-induced inflammatory pathology, reducing ear erythema. Mechanistically, it preserved IκBα stability, suppressed NF-κB nuclear translocation, and decreased proinflammatory cytokine production.
Fucoxanthin exerts anti-acne effects through coordinated inhibition of IκBα degradation and NF-κB nuclear translocation, establishing its potential as a targeted therapeutic agent for inflammatory acne.

Rab32 GTPase, as a direct target of miR-30b/c, controls the intracellular survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei by regulating phagosome maturation

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacterium, which causes a disease known as melioidosis. Professional phagocytes represent a crucial first line of innate defense against invading pathogens. Uptake of pathogens by these cells involves the formation of a phagosome that matures by fusing with early and late endocytic vesicles, resulting in killing of ingested microbes. Host Rab GTPases are central regulators of vesicular trafficking following pathogen phagocytosis. However, it is unclear how Rab GTPases interact with B. pseudomallei to regulate the transport and maturation of bacterial-containing phagosomes. Here, we showed that the host Rab32 plays an important role in mediating antimicrobial activity by promoting phagosome maturation at an early phase of infection with B. pseudomallei. And we demonstrated that the expression level of Rab32 is increased through the downregulation of the synthesis of miR-30b/30c in B. pseudomallei infected macrophages. Subsequently, we showed that B. pseudomallei resides temporarily in Rab32-positive compartments with late endocytic features. And Rab32 enhances phagosome acidification and promotes the fusion of B. pseudomallei-containing phagosomes with lysosomes to activate cathepsin D, resulting in restricted intracellular growth of B. pseudomallei. Additionally, Rab32 mediates phagosome maturation depending on its guanosine triphosphate/guanosine diphosphate (GTP/GDP) binding state. Finally, we report the previously unrecognized role of miR-30b/30c in regulating B. pseudomallei-containing phagosome maturation by targeting Rab32 in macrophages. Altogether, we provide a novel insight into the host immune-regulated cellular pathway against B. pseudomallei infection is partially dependent on Rab32 trafficking pathway, which regulates phagosome maturation and enhances the killing of this bacterium in macrophages.

TLR2/TLR4 activation induces Tregs and suppresses intestinal inflammation caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum in vivo

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) 2 and 4 play critical roles in intestinal inflammation caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) infection, but the role of TLR2/TLR4 in regulation of proinflammatory cytokines remains unknown. In this study, through microarray analysis and qRT-PCR, we showed that TLR2/TLR4 are involved in the F. nucleatum-induced inflammatory signaling pathway in Caco-2 cells, C57BL/6 mice and human clinical specimens. In TLR2-/- and TLR4-/- mice, F. nucleatum infection resulted in increased colonization of the bacteria and production of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-8, IL-1β and TNF-α. In addition, the ratio of Foxp3+ CD4+ T cells in the total CD4+ T cells in TLR2-/- and TLR4-/- mice was less than that in wild-type mice, and the ratio in hybrid mice was more than that in knockout mice, which suggested that TLR2/TLR4 mediated the number of Tregs. Furthermore, it was observed that inflammatory cytokine levels were reduced in TLR2-/- mice after Treg transfer. Thus, these data indicate that TLR2/TLR4 regulate F. nucleatum-induced inflammatory cytokines through Tregs in vivo.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), endogenous small non-coding RNAs, are stably detected in human plasma. Early diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) is very important to improve the therapy effect and prolong the survival of patients. We aimed to identify whether four miRNAs (miR-223, miR-21, miR-218 and miR-25) closely associated with the tumorigenesis or metastasis of GC can serve as novel potential biomarkers for GC detection.
We initially measured the plasma levels of the four miRNAs in 10 GC patients and 10 healthy control subjects by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and then compared plasma miRNA results with the expressions in cancer tissues from eight GC patients. Finally, the presence of miR-223, miR-21 and miR-218 in the plasma was validated in 60 GC patients and 60 healthy control subjects, and the areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of these miRNAs were analyzed.
We found that the plasma levels of miR-223 (P<0.001) and miR-21 (P<0.001) were significantly higher in GC patients than in healthy controls, while miR-218 (P<0.001) was significantly lower. The ROC analyses yielded the AUC values of 0.9089 for miR-223, 0.7944 for miR-21 and 0.7432 for miR-218, and combined ROC analysis revealed the highest AUC value of 0.9531 in discriminating GC patients from healthy controls. Moreover, the plasma levels of miR-223 (P<0.001) and miR-21 (P = 0.003) were significantly higher in GC patients with stage I than in healthy controls. Furthermore, the plasma levels of miR-223 were significantly higher in GC patients with helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection than those without (P = 0.014), and significantly higher in healthy control subjects with Hp infection than those without (P = 0.016).
Plasma miR-223, miR-21 and miR-218 are novel potential biomarkers for GC detection.

Tree‐Ring Insights Into Past and Future Streamflow Variations in Beijing, Northern China

As the largest city in northern China and the capital of China, the rapid increases in Beijing’s water consumption in recent years have made water resources provision an increasing problem. To rationally allocate water resources, it is important to obtain long‐term runoff information in Beijing. In this study we develop a 236‐year chronology of tree‐ring widths based on cores from Pinus tabuliformis from four sampling sites. The resulting regression model reconstructs December–July runoff of the Yongding River in Beijing, with 49.5% of the variance explained, back to 1786 CE. Among the last 236 years, 1868, 1956, 1991, 1998, 2018, and 2021 were extremely high runoff years; and 1900, 1906, 1999, and 2000 were extremely low runoff years. Comparison of the runoff reconstruction results with climate grid data demonstrated a large magnitude of climate change in North China during the study period. Linkage analysis between the reconstructed runoff and large‐scale water vapor indicated that the high runoff years occurred during negative phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which may be influenced by the East Asian Summer Monsoon. Projections indicate that the flow of the Yongding River will increase in the future. Supported by policies such as the Ecological Water Supply and South‐to‐North Water Diversion, regional vegetation productivity and Yongding River runoff have increased substantially since 2000. Vegetation growth interacts with runoff volume. It is unclear how long these increases will continue. Plain Language Summary As the largest city in northern China and the capital of China, Beijing has faced an increasingly water shortage problem in recent years. The Yongding River is an important river in the Beijing area and plays an important role in the local ecological system. In this study, we reconstructed the December–July runoff changes for the Yongding River using tree‐ring data from four sampling sites over the past 236 years. Under the influence of human water resource regulation, regional vegetation productivity and Yongding River runoff have increased significantly since 2000. Vegetation growth and runoff interact, and it is unknown how long these increases will last. Synoptic climatology analysis indicated that the high runoff years occurred during negative phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which may be influenced by the East Asian Summer Monsoon. Projections indicate that the flow of the Yongding River will increase in the future. Core-collapse Supernova Explosions in Active Galactic Nucleus Accretion Disks

Astrophysical events that occur in active galactic nucleus (AGN) disks are believed to differ significantly from the ordinary in the interstellar medium. We show that stars located in the outer region of the AGN disk would explode near the original migration starting points instead of being accreted by the central supermassive black hole owing to the effect of viscosity. AGN disks provide a dense environment for supernova (SN) explosions, which inevitably involve ejecta–disk interactions. In this paper, we investigate the light curves (LCs) of core-collapse SNe that exploded in AGN disks. In addition to the fundamental energy source of the 56Ni–56Co–56Fe decay reaction powering the SN LCs, the forward/reverse shock produced during interactions may contribute significantly to the observed flux. If the stellar winds manage to create a cavity surrounded by a shell near the star before the SN explosion, the ejecta–winds–disk configurations are expected. We present various SN LCs from different types of progenitors and find that the SN LCs are dominated by the radiation of ejecta–disk interaction induced shocks. The resulting SNe in the AGN disk are promising transient sources for UV and optical band detection by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, the Ultraviolet Explorer, and wide-field survey telescopes such as the Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite, the Wide Field Survey Telescope, and the Legacy Survey of Space and Time at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. These detections could aid in the investigation of AGN disks and the associated high-energy transient occurrences.
