Ultra-sensitive polarization-resolved black phosphorus homojunction photodetector defined by ferroelectric domains
With the further miniaturization and integration of multi-dimensional optical information detection devices, polarization-sensitive photodetectors based on anisotropic low-dimension materials have attractive potential applications. However, the performance of these devices is restricted by intrinsic property of materials leading to a small polarization ratio of the detectors. Here, we construct a black phosphorus (BP) homojunction photodetector defined by ferroelectric domains with ultra-sensitive polarization photoresponse. With the modulation of ferroelectric field, the BP exhibits anisotropic dispersion changes, leading an increased photothermalelectric (PTE) current in the armchair (AC) direction. Moreover, the PN junction can promote the PTE current and accelerate carrier separation. As a result, the BP photodetector demonstrates an ultrahigh polarization ratio (PR) of 288 at 1450 nm incident light, a large photoresponsivity of 1.06 A/W, and a high detectivity of 1.27 × 10 11 cmHz 1/2 W −1 at room temperature. This work reveals the great potential of BP in future polarized light detection. Integrated polarization-sensitive photodetectors are important for sensing applications and optical communication. Here, the authors report the realization of 2D black phosphorus homojunction photodetectors defined by ferroelectric substrates, showing polarization ratios up to 288 and high responsivity in the near-infrared.
Hybrid 4DPPM-DQPSK Modulation for Terrestrial Free-Space Optical Links Under Atmospheric Turbulence
Terrestrial free-space laser communication will play a pivotal role in future 6G networks, owing to its high bandwidth and low latency advantages. However, atmospheric turbulence degrades link performance due to intensity scintillation and phase distortion. This paper proposes a hybrid modulation scheme that combines differential pulse position modulation (DPPM) with differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK). The scheme exploits the power efficiency of DPPM and the spectral efficiency of DQPSK, while differential phase detection eliminates the need for carrier recovery and enhances robustness to phase noise. A theoretical bit error rate (BER) model is derived and validated under Gamma–Gamma and Log-normal turbulence channels. Results show that the 4DPPM-DQPSK configuration achieves BER up to several orders of magnitude lower than standalone DPPM or DQPSK under weak-to-moderate turbulence, and improves spectral efficiency by 50% relative to 4DPPM. Packet error rate analysis further confirms its reliability for high-capacity terrestrial FSO links.
Multi-dimensional optical information acquisition based on a misaligned unipolar barrier photodetector
Acquiring multi-dimensional optical information, such as intensity, spectrum, polarization, and phase, can significantly enhance the performance of photodetectors. Incorporating these dimensions allows for improved image contrast, enhanced recognition capabilities, reduced interference, and better adaptation to complex environments. However, the challenge lies in obtaining these dimensions on a single photodetector. Here we propose a misaligned unipolar barrier photodetector based on van der Waals heterojunction to address this issue. This structure enables spectral detection by switching between two absorbing layers with different cut-off wavelengths for dual-band detection. For polarization detection, anisotropic semiconductors like black phosphorus and black arsenic phosphorus inherently possess polarization-detection capabilities without additional complex elements. By manipulating the crystal direction of these materials during heterojunction fabrication, the device becomes sensitive to incident light at different polarization angles. This research showcases the potential of the misaligned unipolar barrier photodetector in capturing multi-dimensional optical information, paving the way for next-generation photodetectors. Multi-dimensional detection of optical information with a single device enables energy- and area-efficient sensing capabilities. Here, the authors report dual-band infrared detectors based on misaligned 2D black phosphorus and black arsenic phosphorus, sensitive to light intensity, spectrum and polarization.
Coupling Effects of Land Use Carbon Emissions and Ecological Security in Border Cities of Jilin Province, China
Rapid urbanization has led to a significant increase in land use carbon emission (LCE), putting great pressure on ecological security. The coupling relationship between LCE and the ecological security index (ESI) is the key to sustainable development. Based on land use/cover change (LUCC) and Open-Data Inventory for Anthropogenic Carbon dioxide (ODIAC) data, the LCE of the Jilin Border Cities (JLBCs) from 2013 to 2023 was estimated. Twenty-seven indicators were selected from both natural and socioeconomic aspects to evaluate the ESI using the Driving forces–Pressure–State–Impact–Response–Management (DPSIRM) model. The spatial interaction between LCE and ESI was analyzed using the coupling degree model and spatial autocorrelation. The results show that from 2013 to 2023, the main LCE areas in the JLBCs were concentrated in central urban districts, while the total LCE remained negative but exhibited a clear upward trend. The ESIs in Tonghua City and Baishan City have continued to improve, but those in Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture have gradually deteriorated, with ecological security warnings intensifying progressively toward the east. The spatial variation in the LCE–ESI coupling degree is significant, predominantly exhibiting low coupling with differences across scales. Within the study area, coupling degree shows a strong positive correlation, revealing distinct spatial clustering patterns dominated by low clusters and cold spots. Future efforts should focus on promoting low-carbon development models, strengthening protection and restoration, while implementing targeted measures to enhance the overall ecology of JLBCs.
A survey of jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) infection in sheep in the three northeastern provinces of China
Ovine pulmonary adenomatosis (OPA) is caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) and is a chronic, progressive, and infectious neoplastic lung disease in sheep, which causes significant economic losses to the sheep industry. Neither a vaccine nor serological diagnostic methods to detect OPA are available. We performed a JSRV infection survey in sheep using blood samples (n = 1,372) collected in the three northeastern provinces of China (i.e., Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Jilin) to determine JSRV infection status in sheep herds using a real-time PCR assay targeting the gag gene of JSRV. The ovine endogenous retrovirus sequence was successfully amplified in all sheep samples tested (296 from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 255 from Jilin province, and 821 from Heilongjiang province). Subsequently, we attempted to distinguish exogenous JSRV (exJSRV) and endogenous JSRV (enJSRV) infections in these JSRV-positive samples using a combination assay that identifies a ScaI restriction site in an amplified 229-bp fragment of the gag gene of JSRV and a “LHMKYXXM” motif in the cytoplasmic tail region of the JSRV envelope protein. The ScaI restriction site is present in all known oncogenic JSRVs but absent in ovine endogenous retroviruses, while the “LHMKYXXM” motif is in all known exJSRVs but not in enJSRVs. Interestingly, one JSRV strain (HH13) from Heilongjiang province contained the “LHMKYXXM” motif but not the ScaI enzyme site. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain HH13 was closely related to strain enJSRV-21 reported in the USA, indicating that HH13 could be an exogenous virus. Our results provide valuable information for further research on the genetic evolution and pathogenesis of JSRV.
Quantum Otto Heat Engine Using Polar Molecules in Pendular States
Quantum heat engines (QHEs) are established by applying the principles of quantum thermodynamics to small−scale systems, which leverage quantum effects to gain certain advantages. In this study, we investigate the quantum Otto cycle by employing the dipole−dipole coupled polar molecules as the working substance of QHE. Here, the molecules are considered to be trapped within an optical lattice and located in an external electric field. We analyze the work output and the efficiency of the quantum Otto heat engine (QOHE) as a function of various physical parameters, including electric field strength, dipole−dipole interaction and temperatures of heat baths. It is found that by adjusting these physical parameters the performance of the QOHE can be optimized effectively. Moreover, we also examine the influences of the entanglement and relative entropy of coherence for the polar molecules in thermal equilibrium states on the QOHE. Our results demonstrate the potential of polar molecules in achieving QHEs.
Integrative Transcriptomics and Proteomics Analysis Provide a Deep Insight Into Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus-Host Interactions During BVDV Infection
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is the causative agent of bovine viral diarrhea-mucosal disease (BVD-MD), an important viral disease in cattle that is responsible for extensive economic losses to the cattle industry worldwide. Currently, several underlying mechanisms involved in viral replication, pathogenesis, and evading host innate immunity of BVDV remain to be elucidated, particularly during the early stage of virus infection. To further explore the mechanisms of BVDV-host interactions, the transcriptomics and proteomics profiles of BVDV-infected MDBK cells were sequenced using RNA-seq and iTRAQ techniques, respectively, and followed by an integrative analysis. Compared with mock-infected MDBK cells, a total of 665 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (391 down-regulated, 274 up-regulated) and 725 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) (461 down-regulated, 264 up-regulated) were identified. Among these, several DEGs and DEPs were further verified using quantitative RT-PCR and western blot. Following gene ontology (GO) annotation and KEGG enrichment analysis, we determined that these DEGs and DEPs were significantly enriched in multiple important cellular signaling pathways including NOD-like receptor, Toll-like receptor, TNF, NF-κB, MAPK, cAMP, lysosome, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, lipid metabolism, and apoptosis signaling pathways. Significantly, the down-regulated DEGs and DEPs were predominantly associated with apoptosis-regulated elements, inflammatory factors, and antiviral elements that were involved in innate immunity, thus, indicating that BVDV could inhibit apoptosis and the expression of host antiviral genes to facilitate viral replication. Meanwhile, up-regulated DEGs and DEPs were primarily involved in metabolism and autophagy signaling pathways, indicating that BVDV could utilize the host metabolic resources and cell autophagy to promote replication. However, the potential mechanisms BVDV-host interactions required further experimental validation. Our data provide an overview of changes in transcriptomics and proteomics profiles of BVDV-infected MDBK cells, thus, providing an important basis for further exploring the mechanisms of BVDV-host interactions.
Immunogenicity evaluation of recombinant Lactobacillus casei W56 expressing bovine viral diarrhea virus E2 protein in conjunction with cholera toxin B subunit as an adjuvant
Background Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the main causes of infectious diseases in cattle and causes large financial losses to the cattle industry worldwide. In this study, Lactobacillus casei strain W56 (Lc W56) was used as antigen deliver carrier to construct a recombinant Lactobacillus vaccine pPG-E2-ctxB/Lc W56 constitutively expressing BVDV E2 protein fused with cholera toxin B subunit (ctxB) as an adjuvant, and its immunogenicity against BVDV infection in mice model by oral route was explored. Results Our results suggested that pPG-E2-ctxB/Lc W56 can effectively activate dendritic cells (DCs) in the Peyer’s patches, up-regulate the expression of Bcl-6, and promote T-follicular helper (Tfh) cells differentiation, as well as enhance B lymphocyte proliferation and promote them differentiate into specific IgA-secreting plasma cells, secreting anti-E2 mucosal sIgA antibody with BVDV-neutralizing activity. Moreover, significant levels ( p  < 0.01) of BVDV-neutralizing antigen-specific serum antibodies were induced in the pPG-E2-ctxB/LC W56 group post-vaccination. The recombinant Lactobacillus vaccine can induce cellular immune responses, and significant levels ( p  < 0.01) of Th1-associated cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, and IFN-γ), Th2-associated cytokines (IL-4, IL-10) and Th17-associated cytokine (IL-17) were determined in the serum of vaccinated mice. Significantly, the recombinant Lactobacillus vaccine provides immune protection against BVDV infection, which can be cleared effectively by the vaccine post-challenge in orally vaccinated animals. Conclusions The genetically engineered Lactobacillus vaccine constructed in this study is immunogenic in mice and can induce mucosal, humoral, and cellular immune responses, providing effective anti-BVDV immune protection. It thus represents a promising strategy for vaccine development against BVDV.
Interface Engineering to Drive High‐Performance MXene/PbS Quantum Dot NIR Photodiode
The realization of a controllable transparent conducting system with selective light transparency is crucial for exploring many of the most intriguing effects in top‐illuminated optoelectronic devices. However, the performance is limited by insufficient electrical conductivity, low work function, and vulnerable interface of traditional transparent conducting materials, such as tin‐doped indium oxide. Here, it is reported that two‐dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene film acts as an efficient transparent conducting electrode for the lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) photodiode with controllable near infrared transmittance. The solution‐processed interface engineering of MXene and PbS layers remarkably reduces the interface defects of MXene/PbS CQDs and the carrier concentration in the PbS layer. The stable Ti3C2Tx/PbS CQDs photodiodes give rise to a high specific detectivity of 5.51 × 1012 cm W−1 Hz1/2, a large dynamic response range of 140 dB, and a large bandwidth of 0.76 MHz at 940 nm in the self‐powered state, ranking among the most exceptional in terms of comprehensive performance among reported PbS CQDs photodiodes. In contrast with the traditional photodiode technologies, this efficient and stable approach opens a new horizon to construct widely used infrared photodiodes with CQDs and MXenes. A novel two‐dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene film is introduced as an effective transparent conducting electrode in lead sulfide quantum dot photodiodes. Exhibiting exceptional near‐infrared transmittance control, interface engineering enhances performance, yielding high detectivity, extensive dynamic response, and notable bandwidth, thereby advancing infrared photodiode technology.
Evaluation of Drying Characteristics and Quality Attributes for Microwave Vacuum Drying of Pork Skin Crisps
As an important by-product of pork, pork skin can be processed into meat-based leisure food products to improve its utilization. In this study, microwave vacuum drying (MVD) technology was used to investigate the effects of microwave powers (600, 700, and 800 W) and processing duration on the drying characteristics and quality attributes of pork skin crisps (PSC). Five classical drying models were used to non-linearly fit the experimental data, and the Midilli et al. model was suitable for characterizing the MVD process of PSC. Before reaching a constant rate of drying, increasing microwave power and time can improve the brittleness and expansion ratio of PSC. In the constant rate drying stage, most of the free water in PSC was removed, showing the best brittleness and a stable expansion ratio. High power and long processing time can lead to serious lipid oxidation and change the flavor of PSC. Overall, the desired quality of PSC is recommended as 700 W for 6 min. This study can provide a reference for MVD application of meat-based by-product leisure foods.
