TV: modern father of history?
2012
Because although history did feel a little beached in the 80s and 90s, this century TV history has been swimming very successfully against the tide, particularly in the last couple of years. Historians need to be paid for the many months of work it takes to generate one hour of television history. Because as with the prehistoric concept of GHOSTI, which encouraged men and women to expand their own horizons - intellectual, material and physical, so TV history should encourage the viewer to step over battle-lines, across national borders and beyond the ring-fences of ignorance, prejudice and xenophobia.

Venus & Aphrodite : history of a goddess
Through ancient art, evocative myth, exciting archaeological revelations and philosophical explorations Bettany Hughes shows why this immortal goddess endures through to the twenty-first century, and what her journey through time reveals about what matters to us as humans. Charting Venus's origins in powerful ancient deities, Bettany demonstrates that Venus is far more complex than first meets the eye. Beginning in Cyprus, the goddess's mythical birthplace, Bettany decodes Venus's relationship to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and, in turn, Aphrodite's mixed-up origins both as a Cypriot spirit of fertility and procreation - but also, as a descendant of the prehistoric war goddesses of the Near and Middle East, Ishtar, Inanna and Astarte. On a voyage of discovery to reveal the truth behind Venus, Hughes reveals how this mythological figure is so much more than nudity, romance and sex. It is the both the remarkable story of one of antiquity's most potent forces, and the story of human desire - how it transforms who we are and how we behave.
Divine women. Episode 1, When God was a girl
Award winning historian, author and broadcaster Bettany Hughes explores the complex attitudes towards women and religion, from 10,000 BC to the present day. If there was a golden age for women in religion, it certainly isn't the 21st century. The status of women in religion is currently a contentious subject, from the furore in the Anglican Church over women bishops to heated debates about the role of women in Islam. But it wasn't always this way – in the past women were often powerful players in the act of worship. From powerful Greek priestesses to rampaging Hindu goddesses; from machievellian Christian matriarchs to the women who shaped the early history of Islam, this series brings stories of the most inspiring female figures in the major world religions vividly to life.

Byzantine Empire Kings and rulers Biography.
2022
The Byzantine empire was one of the most successful states of the Middle Ages, ruling over a huge terrain straddling Europe and western Asia for an unrivalled eleven hundred years. Yet its history remains largely unfamiliar. This chronicle brings this majestic yet turbulent period to life through the lives of its emperors: supreme military commander, Head of State and God's representative on earth, no less. These were the men and women that presided over many of the foundations of the modern world, from the establishment of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith, to the magnificent artistic heritage of Hagia Sophia and Mount Athos, and the creation of a visual template for Christian art. Each illustrated biographical entry contributes to the story of how Byzantium shaped our art, culture, religious beliefs and justice systems, and the role this extraordinary empire played in halting repeated invasions, allowing the idea of 'Europe' to flourish. Through stories of nobility and petty revenge, of religious devotion and brutal genocide, and of sexual intrigue and artistic brilliance; from soaring intellectuals to illiterate peasants, eunuchs and despots, this is a humanizing portrayal of individuals, whose role impacted the lives of millions.
