يهدف مؤلف هذا الكتاب \"اضمحلال العصور الوسطى\" يوهان هويزنجا إلى الكشف عن فترة مجهولة من فترات التاريخ الأوروبي وهى الواقعة بين مرحلة العصور الوسطى ومرحلة العصر الحديث وإلى بيان ما حفلت به من مظاهر النهضة والتقدم فى القرنين الرابع عشر والخامس عشر وعلى الخصوص فى فرنسا وهولندا واعتمد في تأريخه على استقراء المدونات والوثائق الرسمية وعلى التعمق فلى قراءة عقلية الشعوب وبيان طرائق تفكيرها وأسلوبها فى الحياة فقدم بذلك رؤية فلسفية اجتماعية تستحق الاشادة والتقدير.
