This scoping review aims to identify and map the current available evidence regarding the use of immersive virtual reality technology in dementia care education for nursing students.
With the growing population living with dementia, there is an urgent need to prepare nurses for quality dementia care through providing relevant dementia care education for nursing students. Virtual reality is an emerging education medium for nursing education and dementia care education for nursing students. However, little evidence focuses on mapping how immersive virtual reality technology has been used in dementia care education for nursing students. With the increasing development and use of this technology, it is crucial to explore current evidence regarding the content and learning outcomes, design and development, and implementation of immersive virtual reality technology in dementia care education for nursing students.
Studies are eligible if they describe the use of immersive virtual reality technology in dementia education. The dementia care education must be designed for or targeted at nursing students or healthcare professional students (including nursing students) within academic settings, such as nursing schools, universities, and colleges.
The proposed scoping review will be conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and the Population, Concept and Context (PCC) framework. The review will search CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Grey literature search will be conducted via Google Scholar. Extracted data on authors, country, study design, setting, and findings relevant to the review objective will be presented in a data extraction table, accompanied by a quantitative summary of studies' characteristics and narrative summary. The PRISMAS-ScR figure will detail the selection process.

The benefits of and barriers to using a social robot PARO in care settings: a scoping review

Background
Given the complexity of providing dementia care in hospitals, integrating technology into practice is a high challenge and an important opportunity. Although there are a growing demand and interest in using social robots in a variety of care settings to support dementia care, little is known about the impacts of the robotics and their application in care settings, i.e., what worked, in which situations, and how.
Methods
Scientific databases and Google Scholar were searched to identify publications published since 2000. The inclusion criteria consisted of older people with dementia, care setting, and social robot PARO.
Results
A total of 29 papers were included in the review. Content analysis identified 3 key benefits of and 3 barriers to the use of PARO. Main benefits include: reducing negative emotion and behavioral symptoms, improving social engagement, and promoting positive mood and quality of care experience. Key barriers are: cost and workload, infection concerns, and stigma and ethical issues. This review reveals 3 research gaps: (a) the users’ needs and experiences remain unexplored, (b) few studies investigate the process of how to use the robot effectively to meet clinical needs, and (c) theory should be used to guide implementation.
Conclusions
Most interventions conducted have been primarily researcher-focused. Future research should pay more attention to the clinical needs of the patient population and develop strategies to overcome barriers to the adoption of PARO in order to maximize patient benefits.

Background
Quality improvement (QI) programs with technology implementations have been introduced to long-term care (LTC) to improve residents’ quality of life. Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle is commonly adopted in QI projects. There should be an appropriate investment of resources to enhance learning from iterative PDSA cycles. Recently, scholars explored possibilities of implementation science (IS) with QI methods to increase QI projects’ generalisability and make them more widely applicable in other healthcare contexts. To date, scant examples demonstrate the complementary use of the two methods in QI projects involving technology implementation. This qualitative study explores staff and leadership teams’ perspectives on facilitators and barriers of a QI project to implement telepresence robots in LTC guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).
Methods
We employed purposive and snowballing methods to recruit 22 participants from two LTC in British Columbia, Canada: operational and unit leaders and interdisciplinary staff, including nursing staff, care aides, and allied health practitioners. CFIR was used to guide data collection and analysis. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted through in-person and virtual meetings. Thematic analysis was employed to generate insights into participants’ perspectives.
Results
Our analysis identified three themes: (a) The essential needs for family-resident connections, (b) Meaningful engagement builds partnership, and (c) Training and timely support gives confidence. Based on the findings and CFIR guidance, we demonstrate how to plan strategies in upcoming PDSA cycles and offer an easy-to-use tool ‘

Conclusions
Our study offers pragmatic insights into the complementary application of CFIR with PDSA methods in QI projects on implementing technologies in LTC. Healthcare leaders should consider evidence-based strategies in implementing innovations beyond PDSA cycles.

Best practices and practical strategies for co-designing virtual reality with Indigenous peoples: A scoping review protocol

Virtual reality (VR) is gaining traction in healthcare, education, and cultural sectors, from simulations in medical education to immersive museum experiences. Recently, VR has emerged as a powerful tool for Indigenous cultural preservation, language revitalization, and storytelling, offering immersive ways to safeguard knowledge and strengthen community connections. However, despite VR’s potential to support Indigenous self-determination, little is known about the extent of Indigenous leadership, engagements, and settler-Indigenous collaborations in VR development. There is a critical need to examine how VR can be ethically and meaningfully co-designed with Indigenous communities to ensure cultural integrity, respect for Indigenous knowledge systems, and equitable participation in technological innovation. Thus, this scoping review aims to identify practical strategies and best practices for co-designing VR with Indigenous communities. In accordance with the JBI methodology, we will conduct a comprehensive search across seven electronic databases, including MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), Scopus, Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, Compendex (Engineering Village), and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global (ProQuest). Google Scholar will also be searched for grey literature sources. Eligible studies will focus on Indigenous populations (Population) and fully immersive VR co-design (Concept) across various contexts. Studies that do not discuss the design process will be excluded. Two independent reviewers will conduct literature screening, data extraction, and analysis, with findings synthesized narratively and presented in a structured charting table. The results will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed journal publication and shared with relevant community partners to support knowledge translation and application.

Aims: This scoping review explores key strategies of creating inclusive dementia-friendly communities that support people with dementia and their informal caregiver. Background: Social exclusion is commonly reported by people with dementia. Dementia-friendly community has emerged as an idea with potential to contribute to cultivating social inclusion. Methods: This scoping review follows the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology and took place between April and September 2020. The review included a three-step search strategy: (1) identifying keywords from CINAHL and AgeLine; (2) conducting a second search using all identified keywords and index terms across selected databases (CINAHL, AgeLine, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google); and (3) hand-searching the reference lists of all included articles and reports for additional studies. Results: Twenty-nine papers were included in the review. Content analysis identified strategies for creating dementia-friendly communities: (a) active involvement of people with dementia and caregivers (b) inclusive environmental design; (c) public education to reduce stigma and raise awareness; and (d) customized strategies informed by theory. Conclusion: This scoping review provides an overview of current evidence on strategies supporting dementia-friendly communities for social inclusion. Future efforts should apply implementation science theories to inform strategies for education, practice, policy and future research.

The use and impact of virtual reality programs supported by aromatherapy for older adults: A scoping review protocol

Both virtual reality and aromatherapy have shown promising impacts on the health and well-being of older adults. Aromatherapy has been reported to enhance immersive experiences during virtual reality programs. However, studies on the combined use and impact of virtual reality and aromatherapy for older adults have not been systematically reviewed. Therefore, this scoping review will identify existing types of virtual reality programs supported by various forms of aromatherapy and their outcome measures and results on the well-being of older adults. This review will be conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology or scoping reviews and will be reported in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The search strategy will encompass both published and unpublished papers. The databases to be searched are CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, ACM digital library, IEEE Xplore digital library, Compendex, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. Two independent reviewers will perform title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction. Data analysis and synthesis will be discussed by the whole research team, mapped in the literature table and accompanied by a narrative summary. Scoping review data will be collected from publicly available articles; research ethics approval is not required. The findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations.

IntroductionThe number of people with dementia is increasing worldwide, with the majority of people with dementia living at home in the community. WHO calls for global action on the public health response to dementia. Social exclusion is commonly reported by people with dementia and their families. Dementia-friendly and inclusive community has emerged as an idea that holds potential to contribute to the mitigation of social exclusion. The objective of the scoping review is to answer two questions: What social inclusion strategies that have been reported in the dementia-friendly and inclusive communities’ literature? What strategies for developing dementia-friendly and inclusive communities that have shown to improve social inclusion?Methods and analysisThis scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology and will take place between April and September 2020. The proposed review will consider studies based in community settings with participants living at home with early to late stages of dementia and their families. This includes a three-step search strategy: (1) to identify keywords from MEDLINE and CINAHL; (2) to conduct a second search using all identified keywords and index terms across selected databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, AgeLine, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ProQuest and Google) and (3) to handsearch the reference lists of all included articles and reports for additional studies. Further, we will search Google for grey literature on published organisational reports. Two researchers will screen titles and abstracts independently and then assess the full text of selected citations against inclusion criteria. Extracted data will be presented in a narrative accompanied by tables that reflect the objective of the review.Ethics and disseminationAs the methodology of this study consists of collecting data from publicly available articles, it does not require ethics approval. This scoping review provides an overview of current evidence on strategies that support dementia-friendly and inclusive communities for social inclusion. The findings will offer insights to inform strategies for education, practice, policy and future research. We will share the scoping review results through conference presentations and an open-access publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Technological risks and ethical implications of using robots in long-term care

Introduction
The pandemic provides a unique opportunity to examine new directions in innovative technological approaches in long-term care (LTC) homes. While robotics could enhance staff capacity to provide care, there are potential technology risks and ethical concerns involved in technology use among older people residing in communal aged care homes. This qualitative descriptive study explores the technological risks and ethical issues associated with the adoption of robots in the specific context of LTC homes.
Methods
The research team including patient and family partners employed purposive and snowballing methods to recruit 30 LTC participants: frontline interdisciplinary staff, operational leaders, residents and family members, and ethics experts in dementia care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Thematic analysis was performed to identify themes that capture empirical experiences and perspectives of a diverse group of LTC stakeholders about robotic use.
Results
Technological risks include safety, increased workload, privacy, cost and social justice, and human connection. The findings offer practical insights based on the LTC perspective to contribute to the robot ethics literature. We propose a list of pragmatic recommendations, focusing on six principles (ETHICS): Engagement of stakeholders, Technology benefit and risk assessment, Harm mitigation, Individual autonomy, Cultural safety and justice, Support of privacy.
Conclusions
There is both a growing interest as well as fear in using robotics in LTC. Practice leaders need to reflect on ethical considerations and engage relevant stakeholders in making technology decisions for everyday care.

IntroductionMore than 50 million people worldwide are living with dementia in 2020, and this number is expected to double every 20 years. Physical exercise is a growing field in non-pharmacological interventions for dementia care. Due to public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, more people have considered adapting to technology-based exercise via digital devices. This scoping review will explore evidence relating to the use of technology-based group exercise by people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment.Methods and analysisThis review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology to review literature published between June and December 2021. This review is designed to identify existing types of technology-based group exercise interventions for people with dementia. The review will provide a synthesis of current evidence on the outcome and impacts of technology-based group exercise. The context of this review will include homes, assisted living facilities and memory care services but exclude hospitals. The review will include a three-step search strategy: (a) identify keywords from MEDLINE and Embase, (b) search using the identified keywords in databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PsychInfo and Google) and (c) review references from included studies to identify additional studies. Only studies in English will be included. Four researchers will independently assess titles and abstracts and then review the full text of the selected articles, applying the inclusion criteria. The extracted data will be presented in tables and summarised narratively.Ethics and disseminationScoping review data will be collected from publicly available articles; research ethics approval is not required. The findings will be disseminated to healthcare practitioners and the public through a peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations.

Facilitators and barriers to using telepresence robots in aged care settings: a scoping review protocol

IntroductionSocial isolation is a significant issue in aged care settings (eg, long-term care (LTC) and hospital) and is associated with adverse outcomes such as reduced well-being and loneliness. Loneliness is linked with depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, weakened immune system, poor physical health, poor quality of life and mortality. The use of robotic assistance may help mitigate social isolation and loneliness. Although telepresence robots have been used in healthcare settings, a comprehensive review of studies focusing on their use in aged care for reducing social isolation requires further investigation. This scoping review will focus on the use of telepresence robots to support social connection of older people in care settings.Methods and analysisThis scoping review will follow Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology. The review team consists of patient partners and family partners, a nurse researcher and a group of students. In the scoping review, we will search the following databases: MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL, PsycINFO (EBSCO), Web of Science and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. Google and Google Scholar will be used to search for additional literature. A handsearch will be conducted using the reference lists of included studies to identify additional relevant articles. The scoping review will consider studies of using a telepresence robotic technology with older adults in care settings (ie, LTC and hospital), published in English.Ethics and disseminationSince the methodology of the study consists of collecting data from publicly available articles, it does not require ethics approval. By examining the current state of using telepresence to support older people in care settings, this scoping review can offer useful insight into users’ needs (eg, patients’ and care providers’ needs) and inform future research and practice. We will share the scoping review results through conference presentations and an open access publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
