Nowcasting is a critical technology for disaster prevention and mitigation, and the accuracy of radar echo extrapolation directly impacts forecasting performance. In most deep learning-based models, accurately predicting heavy precipitation remains a challenging task. Focusing on the region of China, this study proposes an improved model based on residual and attention mechanisms—RA-UNet—for precipitation nowcasting with a lead time of 3 h. The model introduces the residual neural network (ResNet) and the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) to integrate multi-scale features into the U-Net encoder–decoder architecture, enhancing its ability to capture the spatiotemporal evolution of precipitation systems. Meanwhile, depthwise separable convolutions are employed to replace conventional convolutions, significantly improving computational efficiency while preserving model performance. To evaluate the model’s performance, experiments were conducted using 6 min resolution radar echo data from China in 2024, with comparisons made against the optical flow (OF) method and the U-Net model. The experimental results show that RA-UNet demonstrates significant advantages in 3 h forecasting: its mean absolute error (MAE) is reduced by approximately 7%, the false alarm rate (FAR) decreases by about 20%, and it outperforms the comparison models in metrics such as the critical success index (CSI) and structural similarity index (SSIM). Notably, RA-UNet effectively mitigates intensity degradation in long-term forecasts, successfully predicting the trend of >40 dBZ strong echo cores in two typical cases and significantly improving the premature dissipation problem of precipitation fields. This study provides a new approach to refined forecasting of complex precipitation systems, and future work will combine multi-source data fusion with physical constraint mechanisms to further enhance precipitation event prediction capabilities.

The accuracy of passive satellite cloud top height (CTH) retrieval shows regional dependence. This paper assesses the CTH derived from the FY-4A and Himawari-8 satellites through comparison with those from the ground-based millimeter radar at two sites: Yangbajing, Tibet, China (YBJ), and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Beijing, China. The comparison shows that Himawari-8 missed more CTHs at night than FY-4A, especially at YBJ. It is found that the CTH difference (CTHD; radar CTH minus satellite CTH) for FY-4A and Himawari-8 is 0.06 ± 1.90 km and −0.02 ± 2.40 km at YBJ respectively, and that is 0.93 ± 2.24 km and 0.99 ± 2.37 km at IAP respectively. The discrepancy between the satellites and radar at IAP is larger than that at YBJ. Both satellites show better performance for mid-level and low-level clouds than for high-level clouds at the two sites. The retrievals from FY-4A agree well with those from Himawari-8, with a mean difference of 0.08 km at YBJ and 0.06 km at IAP. It is found that the CTHD decreases as the cloud depth increases at both sites. However, the CTHD has no obvious dependence on cloud layers and fractions. Investigations show that aerosol concentration has little impact on the CTHD. For high and thin clouds, the CTHD increases gradually with the increase of the surface temperature, which might be a key factor causing the regional discrepancy between IAP and YBJ.

Rainfall Monitoring Based on Next-Generation Millimeter-Wave Backhaul Technologies in a Dense Urban Environment
2020
High-resolution and accurate rainfall monitoring is of great importance to many applications, including meteorology, hydrology, and flood monitoring. In recent years, microwave backhaul links from wireless communication networks have been suggested for rainfall monitoring purposes, complementing the existing monitoring systems. With the advances in microwave technology, new microwave backhaul solutions have been proposed and applied for 5G networks. Examples of the latest microwave technology include E-band (71–76 and 81–86 GHz) links, multi-band boosters, and line-of-sight multiple-input multiple-output (LOS-MIMO) backhaul links. They all rely on millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology, which is the fastest small-cell backhaul solution. In this paper, we will study the rain attenuation characteristics of these new microwave backhaul techniques at different mmWave frequencies and link lengths. We will also study the potential of using these new microwave solutions for rainfall monitoring. Preliminary results indicate that all the test mmWave links can be very effective for estimating the path-averaged rain rates. The correlation between the mmWave link measurement-derived rain rate and the local rain gauge is in the range of 0.8 to 0.9, showing a great potential to use these links for precipitation and flood monitoring in urban areas.

Unveiling the mechanism of calcitriol in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus: A combined network pharmacology and in vitro approach targeting ERS-related pathways
2026
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has emerged as a major global public health concern, characterized by increasing prevalence and serious complications that contribute substantially to societal healthcare costs. Concurrently, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) has been increasingly appreciated as a central pathogenic mechanism underpinning the development and progression of T2DM. Calcitriol has been shown to have a beneficial effect in the treatment of T2DM. However, the therapeutic targets and potential mechanisms of calcitriol against T2DM through modulated ERS-related pathways remain poorly understood. To systematically investigate these mechanisms, we adopted an integrated approach combining network pharmacology, molecular docking and experimental validation. Initial network pharmacology analysis identified STAT3, HSP90AA1, MAPK1, and PIK3R1 as potential key targets mediating calcitriol’s anti-T2DM effects. These computational predictions were then experimentally validated using a high glucose (HG)-induced MIN6 cell model. Functional assessments using CCK-8 assays and flow cytometry demonstrated that calcitriol improved the survival of pancreatic β-cells and reduced glucose-induced cell death. Moreover, the results from real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR and western blot analysis revealed that calcitriol reversed the HG induced upregulation of STAT3, HSP90AA1, MAPK1 and PIK3R1 mRNA and protein levels in MIN6 cells. The findings from our study may offer insights into the underlying mechanisms through which calcitriol exerts its therapeutic effects on T2DM by targeting potential ERS-related pathways.

Tokay Gecko ( Gekko gecko ) is a rare and endangered medicinal animal in China. Its dry body has been used as an anti-asthmatic agent for two thousand years. To date, the genome and transcriptome of this species remain poorly understood. Here, we adopted single molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing to obtain full-length transcriptome data and characterized the transcriptome structure. We identified 882,273 circular consensus (CCS) reads, including 746,317 full-length nonchimeric (FLNC) reads. The transcript cluster analysis revealed 212,964 consensus sequences, including 203,994 high-quality isoforms. In total, 111,372 of 117,888 transcripts were successfully annotated against eight databases (Nr, eggNOG, Swiss-Prot, GO, COG, KOG, Pfam and KEGG). Furthermore, 23,877 alternative splicing events, 169,128 simple sequence repeats (SSRs), 10,437 lncRNAs and 7,932 transcription factors were predicted across all transcripts. To our knowledge, this report is the first to document the G . gecko transcriptome using SMRT sequencing. The full-length transcript data might accelerate transcriptome research and lay the foundation for further research on G . gecko .

A Comparative Study of Cloud Microphysics Schemes in Simulating a Quasi-Linear Convective Thunderstorm Case
2024
An investigation is undertaken to explore a sudden quasi-linear precipitation and gale event that transpired in the afternoon of 30 May 2024 over Beijing. It was situated at the southwestern periphery of a double-center low-vortex system, where a moisture-rich belt efficiently channeled abundant warm, humid air northward from the south. The interplay between dynamical lifting, convergent airflow-induced uplift, and the amplifying effects of the northern mountainous terrain’s topography creates favorable conditions that support the development and persistence of quasi-linear convective precipitation, accompanied by gale-force winds at the surface. The study also analyzes the impacts of five microphysics schemes (Lin, WSM6, Goddard, Morrison, and WDM6) employed in a weather research and forecasting (WRF) numerical model, with which the simulated rainfall and radar reflectivity are compared against ground-based rain gauge network and weather radar observations, respectively. Simulations with the five microphysics schemes demonstrate commendable skills in replicating the macroscopic quasi-linear pattern of the event. Among the schemes assessed, the WSM6 scheme exhibits its superior agreement with radar observations. The Morrison scheme demonstrates superior performance in predicting cumulative rainfall. Nevertheless, five microphysics schemes exhibit limitations in predicting the rainfall amount, the rainfall duration, and the rainfall area, with a discernible lag of approximately 30 min in predicting precipitation onset, indicating a tendency to forecast peak rainfall events slightly posterior to their true occurrence. Furthermore, substantial disparities emerge in the simulation of the vertical distribution of hydrometeors, underscoring the intricacies of microphysical processes.

Utilizing CloudSat/CALIPSO satellite data and ERA5 reanalysis data from 2007 to 2016, this study analyzed the distributions of optical and physical characteristics and change characteristics of ice clouds over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The results show that the frequency of ice clouds in the cold season (November to March) on the plateau is over 80%, while in the warm season (May to September) it is around 60%. The average cloud base height of ice clouds in the warm season is 3–5 km, and mostly around 2 km in the cold season. The average cloud top height in the warm season is around 5–8 km, while in the cold season it is mainly around 4.5 km. The average thickness of ice clouds in both seasons is around 2 km. The statistical results of microphysical characteristics show that the ice water content is around 10−1 to 103 mg/m3, and the effective radius of ice clouds is mainly in the range of 10–90 μm. Both have their highest frequency in the west of the TP and lowest in the northeast. A comprehensive analysis of the change in temperature, water vapor, and ice cloud occurrence frequency shows that the rate of increase in water vapor in the warm season is greater than that in the cold season, while the rates of increase in both surface temperature and ice cloud occurrence are smaller than in the cold season. The rate of increase in temperature in the warm season is around 0.038 °C/yr, and that in the cold season is around 0.095 °C/yr. The growth rate of thin ice clouds in the warm season is around 0.15% per year, while that in the cold season is as high as 1% per year. The results suggest that the surface temperature change may be related to the occurrence frequency of thin ice clouds, with the notable increase in temperature during the cold season possibly being associated with a significant increase in the occurrence frequency of thin ice clouds.

A Dual-Frequency Cloud Radar for Observations of Precipitation and Cloud in Tibet: Description and Preliminary Measurements
A new dual-frequency Doppler polarimetric cloud radar (DDCR), working at 35-GHz (Ka-band radar, wavelength: 8.6 mm) and 94-GHz (W-band radar, wavelength: 3.2 mm) frequencies, has been in operation at Yangbajing Observatory on the Tibetan Plateau (China) for more than a year at the time of writing. Calculations and field observations show that the DDCR has a high detection sensitivity of −39.2 dBZ at 10 km and −33 dBZ at 10 km for the 94-GHz radar and 35-GHz radar, respectively. The radar reflectivity measured by the two radars illustrates different characteristics for different types of cloud: for precipitation, the attenuation caused by liquid cloud droplets is obviously more serious for the 94-GHz radar than the 35-GHz radar (the difference reaches 40 dB in some cases), and the 94-GHz radar lost signals due to serious attenuation by heavy rainfall; while for clouds dominated by ice crystals where the attenuation significantly weakens, the 94-GHz radar shows better detection ability than the 35-GHz radar. Observations in the Tibetan region show that the 35-GHz radar is prone to missing cloud near the edge, such as the cloud-top portion, resulting in underestimation of the cloud-top height (CTH). Statistical analysis based on one year of observations shows that the mean CTH measured by the 94-GHz radar in the Tibetan region is approximately 600 m higher than that measured by the 35-GHz radar. The analysis in this paper shows that the DDCR, with its dual-frequency design, provides more valuable information than simpler configurations, and will therefore play an important role in improving our understanding of clouds and precipitation in the Tibetan region.

Recombination plays important roles in the genetic diversity and evolution of Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71). The phylogenetics of EV-A71 in mainland China found that one strain DL71 formed a new subgenotype C6 with unknown origin. This study investigated the detailed genetic characteristics of the new variant. DL71 formed a distinct cluster within genotype C based on the genome and individual genes (5′UTR, VP4, VP1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3D, and 3′UTR). The average genetic distances of the genome and individual genes (VP3, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3C, and 3D) between DL71 and reference strains were greater than 0.1. Nine recombination events involving smaller fragments along DL71 genome were detected. The strains Fuyang-0805a (C4) and Tainan/5746/98 (C2) were identified as the parental strains of DL71. In the non-recombination regions, DL71 had higher identities with Fuyang-0805a than Tainan/5746/98, and located in the cluster with C4 strains. However, in the recombination regions, DL71 had higher identities with Tainan/5746/98 than Fuyang-0805a, and located in the cluster with C2 strains. Thus, DL71 was a novel multiple inter-subgenotype recombinant derived from the dominant subgenotype C4 and the sporadic subgenotype C2 strains. Monitoring the emergence of new variants by the whole-genome sequencing remains essential for preventing disease outbreaks and developing new vaccines.
