Culture modulates face scanning during dyadic social interactions

Recent studies have revealed significant cultural modulations on face scanning strategies, thereby challenging the notion of universality in face perception. Current findings are based on screen-based paradigms, which offer high degrees of experimental control, but lack critical characteristics common to social interactions (e.g., social presence, dynamic visual saliency), and complementary approaches are required. The current study used head-mounted eye tracking techniques to investigate the visual strategies for face scanning in British/Irish (in the UK) and Japanese adults (in Japan) who were engaged in dyadic social interactions with a local research assistant. We developed novel computational data pre-processing tools and data-driven analysis techniques based on Monte Carlo permutation testing. The results revealed significant cultural differences in face scanning during social interactions for the first time, with British/Irish participants showing increased mouth scanning and the Japanese group engaging in greater eye and central face looking. Both cultural groups further showed more face orienting during periods of listening relative to speaking, and during the introduction task compared to a storytelling game, thereby replicating previous studies testing Western populations. Altogether, these findings point to the significant role of postnatal social experience in specialised face perception and highlight the adaptive nature of the face processing system.

Physiological arousal predicts gaze following in infants

According to the natural pedagogy theory, infant gaze following is based on an understanding of the communicative intent of specific ostensive cues. However, it has remained unclear how eye contact affects this understanding and why it induces gaze following behaviour. In this study, we examined infant arousal in different gaze following contexts and whether arousal levels during eye contact predict gaze following. Twenty-five infants, ages 9–10 months participated in this study. They watched a video of an actress gazing towards one of two objects and then either looking directly into the camera to make eye contact or not showing any communicative intent. We found that eye contact led to an elevation in the infants' heart rates (HRs) and that HR during eye contact was predictive of later gaze following. Furthermore, increases in HR predicted gaze following whether it was accompanied by communicative cues or not. These findings suggest that infant gaze following behaviour is associated with both communicative cues and physiological arousal.

Impact of prior bevacizumab therapy on the incidence of ramucirumab-induced proteinuria in colorectal cancer: a multi-institutional cohort study

BackgroundThe association between prior bevacizumab (BEV) therapy and ramucirumab (RAM)-induced proteinuria is not known. We aimed to investigate this association in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC).MethodsmCRC patients who received folinic acid, fluorouracil, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) plus RAM were divided into with and without prior BEV treatment groups. The cumulative incidence of grade 2–3 proteinuria and rate of RAM discontinuation within 6 months (6M) after RAM initiation were compared between the two groups.ResultsWe evaluated 245 patients. In the Fine-Gray subdistribution hazard model including prior BEV, age, sex, comorbidities, eGFR, proteinuria ≥ 2 + at baseline, and later line of RAM, prior BEV treatment contributed to proteinuria onset (P < 0.01). A shorter interval between final BEV and initial RAM increased the proteinuria risk; the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the intervals of < 28 days, 28–55 days, and > 55 days (referring to prior BEV absence) were 2.60 (1.23–5.51), 1.51 (1.01–2.27), and 1.04 (0.76–1.44), respectively. The rate of RAM discontinuation for ≤ 6M due to anti-VEGF toxicities was significantly higher in the prior BEV treatment group compared with that in the no prior BEV treatment group (18% vs. 6%, P = 0.02). Second-line RAM discontinuation for ≤ 6M without progression resulted in shorter overall survival of 132 patients with prior BEV treatment (P < 0.01).ConclusionSequential FOLFIRI plus RAM after BEV failure, especially within 55 days, may exacerbate proteinuria. Its escalated anti-VEGF toxicity may negatively impact the overall survival.

Great apes’ understanding of biomechanics: eye-tracking experiments using three-dimensional computer-generated animations

Visual processing of the body movements of other animals is important for adaptive animal behaviors. It is widely known that animals can distinguish articulated animal movements even when they are just represented by points of light such that only information about biological motion is retained. However, the extent to which nonhuman great apes comprehend the underlying structural and physiological constraints affecting each moving body part, i.e., biomechanics, is still unclear. To address this, we examined the understanding of biomechanics in bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), following a previous study on humans (Homo sapiens). Apes underwent eye tracking while viewing three-dimensional computer-generated (CG) animations of biomechanically possible or impossible elbow movements performed by a human, robot, or nonhuman ape. Overall, apes did not differentiate their gaze between possible and impossible movements of elbows. However, some apes looked at elbows for longer when viewing impossible vs. possible robot movements, which indicates that they may have had knowledge of biomechanics and that this knowledge could be extended to a novel agent. These mixed results make it difficult to draw a firm conclusion regarding the extent to which apes understand biomechanics. We discuss some methodological features that may be responsible for the results, as well as implications for future nonhuman animal studies involving the presentation of CG animations or measurement of gaze behaviors.

Empathic embarrassment towards non-human agents in virtual environments

Humans feel empathic embarrassment by witnessing others go through embarrassing situations. We examined whether we feel such empathic embarrassment even with robot avatars. Participants observed a human avatar and a robot avatar face a series of embarrassing and non-embarrassing scenarios. We collected data for their empathic embarrassment and the cognitive empathy on a 7-point Likert scale. Both empathic embarrassment and cognitive empathy were significantly higher in the embarrassed condition compared to the non-embarrassed condition with both avatars, and the cognitive empathy was significantly higher with the human avatar. There was a tendency of participants showing a higher level of skin conductance while watching the human avatar go through embarrassing situations compared to the robot avatar. A following experiment showed that the average plausibility of the embarrassed condition was significantly higher with the human avatar compared to the robot avatar. However, plausibility scores for emotion were not significantly different among the conditions. These results suggest that humans can feel empathic embarrassment as well as cognitive empathy for robot avatars while cognitive empathy for robot avatars is comparatively lower, and that part of the empathic difference between human and robot avatars might be due to the difference of their plausibility.

Exploring role of sleep aids in sleep problems in preschool children

It is well known that children use sleep aids, such as blankets or soft toys, at bedtime. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the factors associated with their use and role in addressing sleep problems. This study investigated 96 Japanese children aged 40 to 47 months to examine these associations. We measured children’s stress (through a questionnaire and salivary cortisol [cortisol awakening response]), anxiety symptoms, behavioral problems, and temperament, and created a model to predict the status of sleep aid use. Furthermore, we explored the association between sleep aid use and children’s sleep problems as evaluated by their caregivers. We found that children who used sleep aids were more likely to experience anxiety symptoms. Moreover, most children used sleep aids even when they co-slept with their caregivers and/or siblings. Their use was not uniquely associated with sleep problems. These findings suggest that sleep aid serves as a defense against anxiety, including that caused by the absence of a caregiver, rather than as a substitute for a caregiver. Our study sheds light on their role and emphasizes the importance of viewing development within the complex interactive processes of humans and objects.

The infant–doctor relationship: an examination of infants’ distress reactions in the presence of a doctor

Fear of doctors is a common source of distress among infants; however, the underlying sources of this distress are unknown. To investigate the doctor-infant relationship, the behaviors of 61 healthy infants (176–617 days old) were observed in a simulated examination room. Their behaviors and electrocardiograms were recorded. Two groups of infants were analyzed: those who cried and those who did not. When an experimenter dressed in the doctor’s attire entered the room, all 9 infants who were crying (14.8% of all infants) stopped crying, all infants gazed at the experimenter, and their mean heart rate (HR) decreased. After the auscultation started, 29.5% of all infants cried, and the HRs of infants who cried were higher than those of infants who did not cry. During the auscultation, 80.0% of infants who cried averted from the experimenter, while 34.4% of infants who did not cry. Within 5 s of gazing at the stethoscope, the number of infants who cried increased from 3 to 12, and their mean HR also increased. Our findings suggest that the fear of doctors is not due to the appearance of doctors but rather to specific actions performed by doctors, such as auscultation. Infants may regard a doctor’s appearance as a source of interest. Furthermore, a stethoscope is a possible trigger for infants’ crying. These behavioral observations suggest the potential for patient-centered care for infants.

Association Between Working Memory at Age 4 Years and Night Sleep Duration and Yogurt Intake Frequency at Age 1 Year

Background/Objectives: This cohort study examined the effects of sleep durations (night, day, and total daily) at ages 1, 1.5, and 3 years on working memory (WM) assessed at age 4, measured using forward digit span. Methods: Because frequency of yogurt intake at 1 year has been shown to affect sleep duration at 3 years, we also accounted for the association between frequency of yogurt intake at 1 year and sleep duration, based on a recent study indicating positive effects of yogurt on sleep. The study included 164 mother–child pairs observed from ages 1 to 4. Results: Spearman correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that both night sleep duration and yogurt intake at age 1 were significantly associated with WM performance at age 4. In this sample, however, yogurt intake was not correlated with sleep duration. Conclusions: To a limited degree, both yogurt intake frequency and night sleep duration at 1 year were associated with WM performance at 4 years, indicating that frequent yogurt intake at 1 year and longer night sleep duration may lead to higher WM performance at 4 years.

Rudimentary Sympathy in Preverbal Infants: Preference for Others in Distress

Despite its essential role in human coexistence, the developmental origins and progression of sympathy in infancy are not yet fully understood. We show that preverbal 10-month-olds manifest sympathetic responses, evinced in their preference for attacked others according to their evaluations of the respective roles of victim, aggressor, and neutral party. In Experiment 1, infants viewing an aggressive social interaction between a victim and an aggressor exhibited preference for the victim. In Experiment 2, when comparing the victim and the aggressor to a neutral object, infants preferred the victim and avoided the aggressor. These findings indicate that 10-month-olds not only evaluate the roles of victims and aggressors in interactions but also show rudimentary sympathy toward others in distress based on that evaluation. This simple preference may function as a foundation for full-fledged sympathetic behavior later on.

Visual attention in 5-year-olds from three different cultures

Cognitive processes differ markedly between children from different cultures, with best evidence for attention to visual scenes and the activities of others. Children from urban Western cultures tend to focus on focal objects, whereas children from urban East-Asian cultures rather attend to contextual elements of a visual scene. Regarding the attention to others' activities, children from subsistence-based farming communities often observe several activities simultaneously, while children from urban Western contexts focus on activities sequentially. Here we assessed 144 5-year-old children from three prototypical cultural contexts (urban Germany, rural Cameroon, urban Japan) to investigate variations in attention across a variety of tasks. Attention to the elements of a visual scene was assessed in an optical illusion task, in picture descriptions and an eye-tracking paradigm. Attention to and learning from others' activities was assessed in a parallel action task and a rule-based game. Some tasks indicated higher context-sensitive attention in urban Japan, while other findings indicated higher context-sensitive attention in urban Germany. Levels of parallel attention and learning from others' activities were lower in rural Cameroonian children compared to the urban samples. Across tasks, the visual attention measures were unrelated. These findings substantiate that culture has a profound influence on early cognitive development, already in the preschool years. Furthermore, they raise critical questions about the early origins of cultural specificities in attention and the generalizability of attention phenomena beyond specific tasks and populations.
