Climate Change Hastens Population Extinctions

Climate change is expected to alter the distribution and abundance of many species. Predictions of climate-induced population extinctions are supported by geographic range shifts that correspond to climatic warming, but few extinctions have been linked mechanistically to climate change. Here we show that extinctions of two populations of a checkerspot butterfly were hastened by increasing variability in precipitation, a phenomenon predicted by global climate models. We model checkerspot populations to show that changes in precipitation amplified population fluctuations, leading to rapid extinctions. As populations of checkerspots and other species become further isolated by habitat loss, climate change is likely to cause more extinctions, threatening both species diversity and critical ecosystem services.

Intrathecal Baclofen for Management of Spastic Cerebral Palsy: Multicenter Trial

Intrathecal baclofen infusion has demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing spasticity of spinal origin. Oral antispasticity medication is minimally effective or not well tolerated in cerebral palsy. This study assessed the effectiveness of intrathecal baclofen in reducing spasticity in cerebral palsy. Candidates were screened by randomized, double-blind, intrathecal injections of baclofen and placebo. Responders were defined as those who experienced an average reduction of 1.0 in the lower extremities on the Ashworth Scale for spasticity. Responders received intrathecal baclofen via the SynchroMed System and were followed for up to 43 months. Fifty-one patients completed screening and 44 entered open-label trials. Lower-extremity spasticity decreased from an average baseline score of 3.64 to 1.90 at 39 months. A decrease in upper-extremity spasticity was evidenced over the same study period. Forty-two patients reported adverse events. Most common reports were hypotonia, seizures (no new onset), somnolence, and nausea or vomiting. Fifty-nine percent of the patients experienced procedural or system-related events. Spasticity in patients with cerebral palsy can be treated effectively by continuous intrathecal baclofen. Adverse events, although common, were manageable. (J Child Neurol 2000;15:71-77).

Assessment of walking activity in youth with cerebral palsy (CP) has traditionally been \"capacity-based.\" The purpose of this study was to describe the day-to-day ambulatory activity \"performance\" of youth with CP compared with youth who were developing typically.
Eighty-one youth with CP, aged 10 to 13 years, who were categorized as being in Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I to III and 30 age-matched youth who were developing typically were recruited.
Using a cross-sectional design, participants wore the StepWatch monitor for 7 days while documenting average daily total step counts, percentage of time they were active, ratio of medium to low activity levels, and percentage of time at high activity levels.
The youth with CP demonstrated significantly lower levels of all outcomes than the comparison group.
Daily walking activity and variability decreased as functional walking level (GMFCS level) decreased. Ambulatory activity performance within the context of the daily life for youth with CP appears valid and feasible as an outcome for mobility interventions in CP.

Avian Predation on Anolis Lizards in the Northeastern Caribbean: Inter‐Island Contrast

This paper presents results of a field study of avian predation on Anolis lizards on islands in the northeastern Caribbean, addressing the question of what causes annual fluctuation in lizard abundance. The two main potential avian predators, the Pearly—eyed Thrasher (Margarps fuscatus) and the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), were studied on three adjacent islands in the northern Lesser Antilles: Anguilla, St. Martin, and St. Eustatius. Anoles on Anguilla were found to be quantitatively unaffected by avian predation; thrashers there did not eat vertebrates, and the kestrel density was too low to have significant impact on the lizard population. In contrast, thrashers in moist habitat on St. Martin ate vertebrates including anoles, and thrasher predation potentially accounted for the anole decline to the dry—season abundance low. Additionally, an unanticipated thrasher niche shift was discovered. Thrasher body size and diet appear to be related to the abundance of a congeneric species, M. fuscus. On Anguilla, where M. fuscus was absent, M. fuscatus was smaller and had a non—vertebrate diet. On St. Eustatius, M. fuscus was abundant while M. fuscatus was larger and preyed on anoles. M. Fuscus was rate on St. Martin, where M. fuscatus had an intermediate body size and a diet comparable to that on St. Eustatius.

Common names of species are important for communicating with the general public. In principle, these names should provide an accessible way to engage with and identify species. The common names of species have historically been labile without standard guidelines, even within a language. Currently, there is no systematic assessment of how often common names communicate identifiable and biologically relevant characteristics about species. This is a salient issue in ornithology, where common names are used more often than scientific names for species of birds in written and spoken English, even by professional researchers. To gain a better understanding of the types of terminology used in the English-language common names of bird species, a group of 85 professional ornithologists and non-professional contributors classified unique descriptors in the common names of all recognized species of birds. In the AvianLexiconAtlas database produced by this work, each species’ common name is assigned to one of ten categories associated with aspects of avian biology, ecology, or human culture. Across 10,906 species of birds, 89% have names describing the biology of the species, while the remaining 11% of species have names derived from human cultural references, human names, or local non-English languages. Species with common names based on features of avian biology are more likely to be related to each other or be from the same geographic region. The crowdsourced data collection also revealed that many common names contain specialized or historic terminology unknown to many of the data collectors, and we include these terms in a glossary and gazetteer alongside the dataset. The AvianLexiconAtlas can be used as a quantitative resource to assess the state of terminology in English-language common names of birds. Future research using the database can shed light on historical approaches to nomenclature and how people engage with species through their names.

Acquired hydrocephalus associated with superior vena cava syndrome in infants

We report observations on children with the unusual combination of superior vena cava syndrome in infancy followed by communicating hydrocephalus. Following retrospective review of hospital discharges at a tertiary children's hospital, three children were identified in a 13-year period. Two term infants were treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for pulmonary failure associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. These infants had septic complications of central venous lines. A post-term infant required reconstruction of the superior vena cava following cannulation for cardiac bypass surgery to repair transposition of the great vessels. Thrombosis occurred and was followed by the sequential development of superior vena cava syndrome and communicating hydrocephalus. The findings in these patients suggest that communicating hydrocephalus may be caused by superior vena cava syndrome. This is an unusual complication of therapeutic manipulation of the heart and great veins. Cerebrospinal fluid shunting may be required.

Comparative phylogeography reveals widespread cryptic diversity driven by ecology in Panamanian birds

Widespread species often harbor unrecognized genetic diversity, and investigating the factors associated with such cryptic variation can help us better understand the forces driving diversification. Here, we identify potential cryptic species based on a comprehensive dataset of COI mitochondrial DNA barcodes from 2,333 individual Panamanian birds across 429 species, representing 391 (59%) of the 659 resident landbird species of the country, as well as opportunistically sampled waterbirds. We complement this dataset with additional publicly available mitochondrial loci, such as ND2 and cytochrome b, obtained from whole mitochondrial genomes from 20 taxa. Using barcode identification numbers (BINs), we find putative cryptic species in 19% of landbird species, highlighting hidden diversity in the relatively well-described avifauna of Panama. Whereas some of these mitochondrial divergence events corresponded with recognized geographic features that likely isolated populations, such as the Cordillera Central highlands, the majority (74%) of lowland splits were between eastern and western populations. The timing of these splits are not temporally coincident across taxa, suggesting that historical events, such as the formation of the Isthmus of Panama and Pleistocene climatic cycles, were not the primary drivers of cryptic diversification. Rather, we observed that forest species, understory species, insectivores, and strongly territorial species-all traits associated with lower dispersal ability-were all more likely to have multiple BINs in Panama, suggesting strong ecological associations with cryptic divergence. Additionally, hand-wing index, a proxy for dispersal capability, was significantly lower in species with multiple BINs, indicating that dispersal ability plays an important role in generating diversity in Neotropical birds. Together, these results underscore the need for evolutionary studies of tropical bird communities to consider ecological factors along with geographic explanations, and that even in areas with well-known avifauna, avian diversity may be substantially underestimated.Widespread species often harbor unrecognized genetic diversity, and investigating the factors associated with such cryptic variation can help us better understand the forces driving diversification.
