2022
Introduction: Worsening air quality and pollution lead to numerous environmental health and sustainability issues in the South Asia region. This study analyzes India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal for air quality data trends and sustainability indicators. Methodology: By using a population-based study design, six South Asian countries were analyzed using a step-wise approach. Data were obtained from government websites and publicly available repositories for region dynamics and key variables. Results: Between 1990 and 2020, air quality data indicated the highest rise in CO2 emissions in India (578.5 to 2441.8 million tons) (MT), Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. Greenhouse gas emissions, from 1990 to 2018, nearly tripled in India (1990.4 to 3346.6 MT of CO2-equivalents), Nepal (20.6 to 54.6 MT of CO2-equivalents), and Pakistan, and doubled in Bangladesh. Methane emissions rose the highest in Pakistan (70.4 to 151 MT of CO2-equivalents), followed by Nepal (17 to 31 MT of CO2-equivalents) and India (524.8 to 669.3 MT of CO2-equivalents). Nitrous oxide nearly doubled in Bangladesh (16.5 to 29.3 MT of CO2-equivalents), India (141.6 to 256.9 MT of CO2-equivalents), Nepal (17 to 31 MT of CO2-equivalents), and more than doubled in Pakistan (27 to 61 MT of CO2-equivalents). On noting particulate matter 2,5 annual exposure, India saw the highest rise from 81.3 µg/m3 (in 1990) to 90.9 µg/m3 (2017), whereas trends were steady in Pakistan (60.34 to 58.3 µg/m3). The highest rise was noted in Nepal (87.6 to 99.7 µg/m3) until 2017. During the coronavirus disease 19 pandemic, the pre-and post-pandemic changes between 2018 and 2021 indicated the highest PM2.5 concentration in Bangladesh (76.9 µg/m3), followed by Pakistan (66.8 µg/m3), India (58.1 µg/m3), Nepal (46 µg/m3) and Sri Lanka (17.4 µg/m3). Overall, South Asian countries contribute to the worst air quality and sustainability trends regions worldwide. Conclusions: Air pollution is prevalent across a majority of South Asia countries. Owing to unsustainable industrial practices, pollution trends have risen to hazardous levels. Economic, environmental, and human health impacts have manifested and require urgent, concerted efforts by governing bodies in the region.

Real time fault diagnosis in industrial robotics using discrete and slantlet wavelet transformations
2025
Faults in industrial robotic systems can significantly impact operational performance and reliability, particularly in precision-driven environments. This study proposes a real-time, hardware-based fault diagnosis framework that integrates Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Slantlet Transform (SLT) for multi-joint fault detection in a LabVolt 5150 robotic arm. Acceleration data, captured via an ADXL345 sensor, were processed using DWT and SLT for feature extraction and subsequently classified using a Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (MLP-ANN). The proposed method achieved 100% classification accuracy under both constant and variable fault conditions when using DWT, while SLT delivered faster processing times, reducing detection latency from 7.8 s (DWT) to 3.7 s. Notably, this work extends prior research by successfully diagnosing simultaneous faults in multiple robotic joints through real-world hardware experiments. Although emerging graph neural network (GNN) models, such as EGN-OOD, have demonstrated strong performance in mechanical system diagnostics, their application to real-time, multi-joint robotic fault detection remains limited. The results of this study provide valuable insights for selecting suitable algorithms in industrial applications, with future work aimed at integrating graph-based learning frameworks for enhanced adaptability and robustness.

Gameplay Engagement and Learning in Game-Based Learning: A Systematic Review
2015
In this review, we investigated game design features that promote engagement and learning in game-based learning (GBL) settings. The aim was to address the lack of empirical evidence on the impact of game design on learning outcomes, identify how the design of game-based activities may affect learning and engagement, and develop a set of general recommendations for GBL instructional design. The findings illustrate the impact of key gaming features in GBL at both cognitive and emotional levels. We also identified gaming trends and several key drivers of engagement created by the gaming features embedded within GBL, as well as external factors that may have influences on engagement and learning.

Several researchers have investigated the consequences of using ChatGPT in the education industry. Their findings raised doubts regarding the probable effects that ChatGPT may have on the academia. As such, the present study aimed to assess the ability of three methods, namely: (1) academicians (senior and young), (2) three AI detectors (GPT-2 output detector, Writefull GPT detector, and GPTZero) and (3) one plagiarism detector, to differentiate between human- and ChatGPT-written abstracts. A total of 160 abstracts were assessed by those three methods. Two senior and two young academicians used a newly developed rubric to assess the type and quality of 80 human-written and 80 ChatGPT-written abstracts. The results were statistically analysed using crosstabulation and chi-square analysis. Bivariate correlation and accuracy of the methods were assessed. The findings demonstrated that all the three methods made a different variety of incorrect assumptions. The level of the academician experience may play a role in the detection ability with senior academician 1 demonstrating superior accuracy. GPTZero AI and similarity detectors were very good at accurately identifying the abstracts origin. In terms of abstract type, every variable positively correlated, except in the case of similarity detectors (
p
< 0.05). Human-AI collaborations may significantly benefit the identification of the abstract origins.

Understanding the Journey of Patients With Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis: A Qualitative Study of the Impact on Children and Families
2021
Purpose:
To understand the impact of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), a chronic allergic inflammation of the ocular surface that primarily affects children and young adults, on daily life.
Methods:
This qualitative study used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Paired interviews with patients and parents were conducted in the participants' homes. Interviews continued until thematic saturation (no new information arising) was obtained. Nine patients and their families were interviewed. The patients were between 5 and 13 years old with disease severity ranging from mild to severe.
Results:
Several consistent themes emerged from the study, including the significant impact of VKC on schooling and family life. Families of children with VKC experience delays in receiving an accurate diagnosis and a lack of information and emotional support, which led the parents to report living in a constant state of tension about whether they were doing the right thing for their child. Although many children with VKC also have other atopic conditions, there is no cohesive approach to clinical care.
Conclusions:
VKC poses a significant burden on the lives of patients and their families. Greater awareness among clinicians is essential for early diagnosis and treatment and to prevent potential sight-threatening complications. The chronic nature of VKC necessitates a holistic approach to patient care to address the multiple clinical and emotional needs of the children and their families.[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2021;58(5):298–303.]
