Adolescents’ representations of close relationships in the context of parental migration: an exploratory study from Ecuador

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the association between parental migration and adolescents’ styles of close relationships with parents, friends and romantic partners.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 197 adolescents from Cuenca (Ecuador) participated in the study, of which 35% reported a background of parental migration. The Behavioral Systems Questionnaire was used to assess participants’ relational styles.
Findings
The study reveals that, although parental migration is associated with the development of lower secure styles for parents and friends, it is not associated with the development of insecure styles. Moreover, parental migration does not appear to be associated with the development of romantic styles. Based on the differential impact of the migration of one or two parents, the migration of two parents appeared to have a stronger association with lower secure styles.
Originality/value
The results are discussed in light of the socio-cultural context in which parental migration occurs in Ecuador, which may offer clue variables in shaping the relational styles of adolescents. The study addresses an important consequence of migration focusing on a scarce studies group, adolescents who stay in their home country while their parents migrate. Moreover, its main findings challenge the preconceptions that parent-child separations necessarily involve a direct negative impact on relational functioning.

Abstract This study aimed to understand the access to transnational social protection by Ecuadorian migrants to Spain between 1999 and 2003, and those who returned between 2010 and 2014. Given the perception of inefficiency or lack of protection on the part of the State and the market, migrants use their repertoire of sources of transnational social protection, mainly from multi-situated personal and family networks and, to a lesser extent, from the third sector. Fecha de recepción: 16-11-2023 Fecha de aceptación: 31-07-2024 La protección social transnacional Un tema que ha cobrado interés en los estudios migratorios está relacionado con la protección social, debido a los desajustes que provoca la movilidad humana en torno al acceso a la seguridad pública dado que esta sigue la lógica del Estado nacional moderno (Parella y Speroni 2018). La Protección Social Transnacional [PST] incluye diferentes componentes formales e informales que posibilitan el acceso a recursos tangibles e intangibles, que ayudan a enfrentar los riesgos sociales en las esferas del trabajo, cuidado, salud y educación (Bilecen y Barglowski 2015; Boccagni 2016). En segundo lugar, se señala que la migración misma es una herramienta de protección social (Avato et al. 2010; Faist 2017), es decir, que la propia movilidad humana es un multiplicador potencialmente único de los recursos relacionados con el bienestar (Boccagni 2016). En otras palabras, las redes interpersonales -ya sea familiares o comunitarias- que dan una protección social \"desde abajo\" o como preferimos llamarle desde los 'márgenes del Estado' que permiten satisfacer las necesidades de los excluidos en diferentes ámbitos como la educación, la salud, el cuidado de niños, adultos mayores, acceso a vivienda, empleo, entre otros. (2017), el Sur global aún carece de accesos a protección social adecuada. Así también, Voorend y Alvarado (2021) proponen desarrollar una agenda académica que explore las prácticas de protección social transnacional de los migrantes en y desde el Sur Global.

Traditional gender roles translating into behaviors within adolescents' romantic relationships

Si bien varios estudios han sugerido que las ideologías de género tradicionales están fuertemente arraigadas en las poblaciones latinas, aún se sabe poco sobre la forma en que estas operan en las relaciones románticas de los adolescentes. Este estudio de método mixto se realizó con adolescentes de Cuenca en Ecuador. En el componente cuantitativo, evaluamos el apoyo a las ideologías tradicionales de género en una muestra de 562 adolescentes (n = 309 niñas). Se encontró que la mayoría de los adolescentes podrían ser clasificados como «acríticos» hacia las ideologías tradicionales de masculinidad (82 %) y feminidad (79 %). En el componente cualitativo, las narrativas de una muestra de 20 adolescentes reflejaron los discursos existentes sobre los roles tradicionales de género y revelaron cómo estos se traducen en comportamientos específicos. En este contexto, las relaciones románticas pueden convertirse en espacios negativos y disfuncionales que pueden afectar el desarrollo de los adolescentes.

Sexual education in the educational system is a right of adolescents. In Latin America, despite the progress in the implementation of sexual education to prevent adolescent pregnancy, deficiencies are also evident. With the aim of exploring the sexual education experiences of adolescent fathers and mothers in schools, a qualitative study was developed in Cuenca. 19 semi-structured interviews were carried out (10 mothers; 9 adolescent fathers), and a thematic analysis of the information was used. It was found that, despite the established guidelines, sexual education is scarce and biased; Its implementation is unsystematic, with a bio-medical and moralistic approach and; it does not consider sexual development needs of adolescents. This reveals worrying gaps in the educational system that may contribute to the development of life skills.
A educação sexual no sistema educacional é um direito dos adolescentes. Na América Latina, o progresso é evidente, mas também são evidentes as deficiências na implementação da educação sexual para prevenir a gravidez na adolescência. Com o objetivo de explorar as experiências de educação sexual de pais e mães adolescentes nas escolas, foi realizado um estudo qualitativo em Cuenca. Foram realizadas 19 entrevistas semiestruturadas (10 mães; 9 pais adolescentes), foi realizada uma análise temática das informações. Constatou-se que, apesar das diretrizes estabelecidas, a educação sexual é escassa e tendenciosa; A sua implementação é assistemática, com uma abordagem biomédica e moralista e; não considera as necessidades de desenvolvimento sexual dos adolescentes. Isto revela lacunas preocupantes no sistema educativo que contribuem para o desenvolvimento de competências necessárias à vida.
La educación sexual en el sistema educativo es un derecho de los adolescentes. En Latinoamérica se evidencian avances, pero también se vislumbran deficiencias en la implementación de la educación sexual para prevención del embarazo adolescente. Con el objetivo de explorar las experiencias de educación sexual de padres y madres adolescentes en colegios, se realizó un estudio cualitativo en Cuenca. Se realizaron 19 entrevistas semiestructuradas (diez madres, nueve padres adolescentes) y un análisis temático de la información. Se encontró que, a pesar de los lineamientos establecidos, la educación sexual es escasa y sesgada. Su implementación es asistemática, con enfoque biomédico y moralista, y no considera necesidades del desarrollo sexual de adolescentes. Esto vislumbra preocupantes vacíos en el sistema educativo que aporten al desarrollo de habilidades necesarias para su vida.

Traditional gender roles translating into behaviors within adolescents’ romantic relationships

Abstract While several studies suggest that traditional gender ideologies are strongly embedded in Latino populations, little is known about the way they operate in adolescent’s romantic relationships. This mixed-methods study was carried out with adolescents in Cuenca, Ecuador. In the quantitative component, we assessed adolescents’ support for traditional gender ideologies in a sample of 562 adolescents (n = 309 girls). It was identified that the majority of adolescents were “uncritical” towards traditional ideologies involving masculinity (82%) and femininity (79%). In the qualitative component, the narratives of a sample of 20 adolescents reflected existing discourses on traditional gender roles and revealed how these ideologies are translated into specific behaviors. In this context, romantic relationships can become negative and dysfunctional spaces that affect adolescents’ development.

Methodological Guidelines for Focus Groups with Children from Developing Regions

Qualitative research with children has gained recognition in recent years. Nevertheless, special considerations should be analyzed before conducting focus groups with children from developing countries where methodological guidelines are scarce. This article provides methodological guidelines for conducting focus groups with children from developing countries based on an extensive literature review and our experience in urban and rural areas in Ecuador. Peculiarities of urban and rural contexts are highlighted, and child-friendly strategies are proposed. We conclude that focus groups can be conducted successfully with urban and rural children from low-and-middle-income countries if their specific circumstances, such as language and cultural diversity, are contemplated and all the materials are tested beforehand.

Las Relaciones de Pareja en los Adolescentes de Cuenca: su relación con el machismo/marianismo

The romantic relationships are socially constructed relationships, meaning that they are shaped by various social and cultural factors. While these relationships have been studied previously in adults, in recent decades it has highlighted the need to study them during adolescence, where it has become clear that present important specific features. However, most studies on the subject have been developed in Europe and North America but there’s a void with respect to the development of relationships in Latin American cultures. For this reason, the aim of the research was to know and analyze the experiences around to relationships that experience the young people of Cuenca, in order to understand how cultural elements may be shaping these relations. To do this, in-depth interviews were conducted to 20 adolescents between 15 to 17 years, from the city of Cuenca. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results allowed knowing the fact that the relationships represent a great source of support for the young people, but in their development they execute dynamics of control and jealousy that are rather perceived as a kind of protection and care. Further, in the experiences of adolescents controlling behaviors are very frequent and naturalized in association of their ideas about romantic love.

Embora vários estudos tenham sugerido que as ideologias tradicionais de gênero são fortemente endossadas nas populações latinas, ainda pouco se sabe sobre a forma como operam nas relações românticas dos adolescentes. Este estudo de métodos mistos foi realizado com adolescentes de Cuenca, no Equador. No componente quantitativo, avaliamos o endosso de ideologias tradicionais de gênero em uma amostra de 562 adolescentes (n = 309 meninas). Verificou-se que a maioria dos adolescentes pode ser classificada como \"acrítica†em relação às ideologias tradicionais de masculinidade (82 %) e feminilidade (79 %). No componente qualitativo, as narrativas de uma amostra de 20 adolescentes refletiram os discursos existentes sobre os papéis tradicionais de gênero e revelaram como estes se traduzem em comportamentos específicos.
