Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Enabled by Phosphorus Doping of the Fe Electronic Structure in Iron–Nickel Selenide Nanosheets
The electronic structure of active sites is critically important for electrochemical reactions. Here, the authors report a facile approach to independently regulate the electronic structure of Fe in Ni0.75Fe0.25Se2 by P doping. The resulting electrode exhibits superior catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) showing a low overpotential (238 mV at 100 mA cm−2, 185 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and an impressive durability in an alkaline medium. Additionally, the mass activity of 328.19 A g−1 and turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.18 s−1 at an overpotential of 500 mV are obtained for P─Ni0.75Fe0.25Se2 which is much higher than that of Ni0.75Fe0.25Se2 and RuO2. This work presents a new strategy for the rational design of efficient electrocatalysts for OER. The precise electronic structure regulation of Fe in Ni0.75Fe0.25Se2 by P doping leads to the P─Ni0.75Fe0.25Se2 electrode with remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
Investigating the Structural Evolution and Catalytic Activity of c-Co/Co3Mo Electrocatalysts for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
Transition metal alloys have emerged as promising electrocatalysts due to their ability to modulate key parameters, such as d-band electron filling, Fermi level energy, and interatomic spacing, thereby influencing their affinity towards reaction intermediates. However, the structural stability of alloy electrocatalysts during the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a subject of debate. In this study, we systematically investigated the structural evolution and catalytic activity of the c-Co/Co3Mo electrocatalyst under alkaline HER conditions. Our findings reveal that the Co3Mo alloy and H0.9MoO3 exhibit instability during alkaline HER, leading to the breakdown of the crystal structure. As a result, the cubic phase c-Co undergoes a conversion to the hexagonal phase h-Co, which exhibits strong catalytic activity. Additionally, we identified hexagonal phase Co(OH)2 as an intermediate product of this conversion process. Furthermore, we explored the readsorption and surface coordination of the Mo element, which contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity of the c-Co/Co3Mo catalyst in alkaline HER. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of alloy-based electrocatalysts, shedding light on their structural stability and catalytic activity during electrochemical reduction processes.
Design and Preparation of NiFe2O4@FeOOH Composite Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient and Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction
Rational design and constructing earth-abundant electrocatalysts for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting is a crucial challenge. Herein, we report a simple and efficient one-step electrochemical synthetic route of the NiFe2O4@FeOOH composite electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction. The unique morphology of the NiFe2O4 nanoflowers loaded on FeOOH nanosheets allows more active sites to be exposed and promote charge transfer as well as gas release, and the resulting electrode enables a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low overpotential of 255 mV with outstanding stability at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 for 300 h.
GC-MS Characterization of Volatile Flavor Compounds in Stinky Tofu Brine by Optimization of Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Conditions
This study optimized the headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) conditions for the analysis of the volatile flavor compounds of Chinese south stinky tofu brine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimum HS-SPME conditions established were as follows: polar column CD-WAX, white 85 μm polyella extractor, extraction temperature 60 °C, equilibrium time 20 min, extraction time 40 min. Under these conditions, a total of 63 volatile flavor compounds in five stinky tofu brines were identified. The offensive odor of the stinky tofu may be derived from some of the volatile flavor compounds such as phenol, p-cresol, 3-methylindole, indole, acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, n-butyric acid and 3-methylbutanoic acid. The volatile flavor substances data was examined by principal component analysis (PCA) to visualize the response patterns in the feature space of principal components (PC). PCA analysis results revealed that the Chengshifu brine (STB1) and Baise jingdian brine (STB4) are similar in PC 1, 2, and 3, and the two brines have a similar flavor. Results also indicate that the Huogongdian brine (STB2) and Wangcheng brine (STB3) can be grouped in the same class as they are similar in PC 3. However, PC 1, 2, and 3 of the Luojia brine (STB5) and other brands of brine are different as is the flavor.
Untargeted metabonomics and TLR4/ NF-κB signaling pathway analysis reveals potential mechanism of action of Dendrobium huoshanense polysaccharide in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is marked by hepatic steatosis accompanied by an inflammatory response. At present, there are no approved therapeutic agents for NAFLD. Dendrobium Huoshanense polysaccharide (DHP), an active ingredient extracted from the stems of Dendrobium Huoshanense , and exerts a protective effect against liver injury. However, the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of action DHP against NAFLD remain unclear. DHP was extracted, characterized, and administered to mice in which NAFLD had been induced with a high-fat and high-fructose drinking (HFHF) diet. Our results showed that DHP used in this research exhibits the characteristic polysaccharide peak with a molecular weight of 179.935 kDa and is composed primarily of Man and Glc in a molar ratio of 68.97:31.03. DHP treatment greatly ameliorated NAFLD by significantly reducing lipid accumulation and the levels of liver function markers in HFHF-induced NAFLD mice, as evidenced by decreased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol (TC) and total triglyceride (TG). Furthermore, DHP administration reduced hepatic steatosis, as shown by H&E and Oil red O staining. DHP also inhibited the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway expression, thereby reducing levels of hepatic proinflammatory cytokines. Besides, untargeted metabolomics further indicated that 49 metabolites were affected by DHP. These metabolites are strongly associated the metabolism of glycine, serine, threonine, nicotinate and nicotinamide, and arachidonic acid. In conclusion, DHP has a therapeutic effect against NAFLD, whose underlying mechanism may involve the modulation of TLR4/NF-κB, reduction of inflammation, and regulation of the metabolism of glycine, serine, threonine, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, and arachidonic acid metabolism.
Differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells into Schwann cell-like cells through intermittent induction: potential advantage of cellular transient memory function
Background Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a worldwide issue associated with severe social and economic burden. Autologous nerve grafting, the gold standard treatment for peripheral nerve defects, still has a number of technical limitations. Tissue engineering technology is a novel therapeutic strategy, and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are promising seed cells for nerve tissue engineering. However, the efficiency of traditional methods for inducing the differentiation of MSCs to Schwann cell-like cells (SCLCs) remains unsatisfactory. Methods Here, we propose an intermittent induction method with alternate use of complete and incomplete induction medium to induce differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) to SCLCs. The time dependence of traditional induction methods and the efficiency of the intermittent induction method and traditional induction methods were evaluated and compared using immunocytochemistry, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and co-culture with the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) in vitro. Cell transplantation was used to compare the effects of the traditional induction method and the intermittent induction method in repairing sciatic nerve defects in vivo. Results The results of the present study indicated that the intermittent induction method is more efficient than traditional methods for inducing ASCs to differentiate into SCLCs. In addition, SCLCs induced by this method were closer to mature myelinating Schwann cells and were capable of secreting neurotrophins and promoting DRG axon regeneration in vitro. Furthermore, SCLCs induced by the intermittent induction method could repair sciatic nerve defects in rats by cell transplantation in vivo more effectively than those produced by traditional methods. Conclusion Intermittent induction represents a novel strategy for obtaining seed cells for use in nerve tissue engineering.
Dactylospenes A–E, Sesterterpenes from the Marine Sponge Dactylospongia elegans
Chemical investigation on a marine sponge, Dactylospongia elegans, yielded five new γ-oxygenated butenolide sesterterpene derivatives, dactylospenes A–E (1–5), as well as two known biosynthetically related compounds, luffariellolide (6) and furospinosulin B (7). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic data, experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis, as well as comparison of the NMR data with those of known analogs. These metabolites are the first γ-oxygenated butenolide sesterterpenes to be reported from this genus. These compounds were evaluated in antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic assays. Only compounds 1, 3, and 6 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against DU145, SW1990, Huh7, and PANC-1 cancer cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 2.11–13.35 μM. Furthermore, compound 2, without cytotoxicity, exhibited significant inhibitory effects (inhibitory rate 77.5%) on nitric oxide production induced by lipopolysaccharide at 10 μM.

Oct-4 is associated with gastric cancer progression and prognosis
To investigate the clinical significance of Oct-4 in the development and progression of gastric cancer. Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze Oct-4 expression in 412 gastric cancer cases. Oct-4 protein levels were upregulated in gastric cancer tissues compared with adjacent noncancerous tissues. Positive expression of Oct-4 correlated with age, depth of invasion, Lauren classification, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and TNM stage. In stages I, II, and III, the 5-year survival rate of patients with high expression of Oct-4 was significantly lower than that in patients with low expression of Oct-4. In stage IV, Oct-4 expression did not correlate with the 5-year survival rate. Furthermore, multivariate analysis suggested that the depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage, and upregulation of Oct-4 were independent prognostic factors of gastric cancer. Oct-4 protein is a useful marker in predicting tumor progression and prognosis.
Copper-induced synthesis of versatile FeOx nanozymes for catalytic cancer therapy
The recent advancement of nanocatalysis offers great promise for cancer therapy, and the development of efficient nanozymes for catalytic biological reactions is highly desirable, but still challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultra-small FeO x nanozymes which is enabled by the introduction of Cu 2+ . The obtained nanozymes exhibit versatile catalytic activities integratively for effective cancer treatment. In particular, the as-synthesized nanozymes display pH-dependent peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity and approach the optimal performance at around pH = 4, endowing it with the possibility for the precise treatment of tumors with acidic microenvironment. Furthermore, the FeO x nanozyme possesses a promising glutathione (GSH) depleting capability and allows to reverse the abnormal GSH level in the tumor issues. Additionally, the fabricated nanozymes are able to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to O 2 , allowing to alleviate the hypoxic environment of the tumors and improving the function of immune system for the treatment of tumors. More importantly, the FeO x nanozymes showed remarkable stability and maintained the enzymatic activity after six months in storage. Collectively, the FeO x nanozyme was demonstrated as a promisingly effective nanomedicine for tumor treatment by 4T1 cells, providing insight into the rational design of efficient nanozymes for cancer treatment.
