The United States is presently experiencing a significant shortage of allied health professionals in medical laboratory and public health data science careers and is producing less than half the number of graduates that will be required to fill vacant positions in the field. There is
a critical need for these professionals to handle the increasing burden of testing and data management required in the relevant healthcare fields. Academic training programs that highlight and educate high school students, teachers, and guidance counselors about the medical laboratory sciences
and public health information technology fields will be crucial to address these and future shortages of health professionals in these skill areas. This is particularly important in rural underserved areas such as those found in West Tennessee, where barriers to public health are already insurmountable
due to poverty and loss of rural community hospitals. We propose that instillation of specifically targeted programs will provide high school students with education about career options in allied healthcare that make valuable contributions to the patient care team, support for rising college
students to earn dual-enrollment college credit, and professional and skills development in health care and data sciences for high school teachers.

Hoo-doo cowboys and bronze buckaroos : conceptions of the African American West
\"Hoo-Doo Cowboys and Bronze Buckaroos undertakes an interdisciplinary exploration of the African American West through close readings of texts from a variety of media. This approach allows for both an in-depth analysis of individual texts and a discussion of material often left out or underrepresented in studies focused only on traditional literary material. The book engages heretofore unexamined writing by Rose Gordon, who wrote for local Montana newspapers rather than for a national audience; memoirs and letters of musicians, performers, and singers (such as W. C. Handy and Taylor Gordon), who lived in or wrote about touring the American West; the novels and films of Oscar Micheaux; black-cast westerns starring Herb Jeffries; largely unappreciated and unexamined episodes from the \"golden age of western television\" that feature African American actors; film and television westerns that use science fiction settings to imagine a \"postracial\" or \"postsoul\" frontier; Percival Everett's fiction addressing contemporary black western experience; and movies as recent as Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.Despite recent interest in the history of the African American West, we know very little about how the African American past in the West has been depicted in a full range of imaginative forms. The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread rapidly due to its virulence and ability to be transmitted by asymptomatic infected persons. If they are present, the symptoms of COVID-19 may include rhinorrhea (runny nose), headache, cough, and fever. Up to 5% of affected persons may experience more severe COVID-19 illness, including severe coagulopathy, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) characterized by respiratory failure that requires supplementary oxygen and mechanical ventilation, and multi-organ failure. Interestingly, clinical evidence has highlighted the distinction between COVID-19-associated coagulopathy (CAC) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Patients with CAC exhibit different laboratory values than DIC patients for activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT) which may be normal or shortened, varying platelet counts, altered red blood cell morphology, unique bleeding complications, a lack of schistocytes in the peripheral blood, and no decrease in fibrinogen levels. In this review, we consider the search for 1) laboratory results that can diagnose or predict development of CAC, including serum levels of D-dimers, fibrinogen, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the growth factor angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), 2) mechanisms of CAC induction, and 3) novel therapeutic regimens that will successfully treat COVID-19 before development of CAC.

The Sandia Fracture Challenges provide a forum for the mechanics community to assess its ability to predict ductile fracture through a blind, round-robin format where mechanicians are challenged to predict the deformation and failure of an arbitrary geometry given experimental calibration data. The Third Challenge (SFC3) required participants to predict fracture in an additively manufactured (AM) 316L stainless steel bar containing through holes and internal cavities that could not have been conventionally machined. The volunteer participants were provided extensive data including tension and notched tensions tests of 316L specimens built on the same build-plate as the Challenge geometry, micro-CT scans of the Challenge specimens and geometric measurements of the feature based on the scans, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) information on grain texture, and post-test fractography of the calibration specimens. Surprisingly, the global behavior of the SFC3 geometry specimens had modest variability despite being made of AM metal, with all of the SFC3 geometry specimens failing under the same failure mode. This is attributed to the large stress concentrations from the holes overwhelming the stochastic local influence of the AM voids and surface roughness. The teams were asked to predict a number of quantities of interest in the response based on global and local measures that were compared to experimental data, based partly on Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measurements of surface displacements and strains, including predictions of variability in the resulting fracture response, as the basis for assessment of the predictive capabilities of the modeling and simulation strategies. Twenty-one teams submitted predictions obtained from a variety of methods: the finite element method (FEM) or the mesh-free, peridynamic method; solvers with explicit time integration, implicit time integration, or quasi-statics; fracture methods including element deletion, peridynamics with bond damage, XFEM, damage (stiffness degradation), and adaptive remeshing. These predictions utilized many different material models: plasticity models including J2 plasticity or Hill yield with isotropic hardening, mixed Swift-Voce hardening, kinematic hardening, or custom hardening curves; fracture criteria including GTN model, Hosford-Coulomb, triaxiality-dependent strain, critical fracture energy, damage-based model, critical void volume fraction, and Johnson-Cook model; and damage evolution models including damage accumulation and evolution, crack band model, fracture energy, displacement value threshold, incremental stress triaxiality, Cocks-Ashby void growth, and void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. Teams used various combinations of calibration data from tensile specimens, the notched tensile specimens, and literature data. A detailed comparison of results based of these different methods is presented in this paper to suggest a set of best practices for modeling ductile fracture in situations like the SFC3 AM-material problem. All blind predictions identified the nominal crack path and initiation location correctly. The SFC3 participants generally fared better in their global predictions of deformation and failure than the participants in the previous Challenges, suggesting the relative maturity of the models used and adoption of best practices from previous Challenges. This paper provides detailed analyses of the results, including discussion of the utility of the provided data, challenges of the experimental-numerical comparison, defects in the AM material, and human factors.

Can't stand still : Taylor Gordon and the Harlem Renaissance
\"Born in 1893 into the only African American family in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Emmanuel Taylor Gordon (1893-1971) became an internationally famous singer in the 1920s at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. With his musical partner, J. Rosamond Johnson, Gordon was a crucially important figure in popularizing African American spirituals as an art form, giving many listeners their first experience of black spirituals. Despite his fame, Taylor Gordon has been all but forgotten, until now. Michael K. Whether God Exists Is Irrelevant to Ethics

The question of whether ethics is possible without God is a non-issue. While many believe that without God, morality collapses, I contend that the existence or non-existence of God has no bearing on whether ethics is possible, whether moral truths exist, or whether ethical inquiry is viable. Ethics is no more secure within a theistic framework than an atheistic one. I establish this by critically examining Divine Command Theory (DCT) and its variants, including Divine Nature Theory, demonstrating that they fail to provide truthmakers for moral statements, explain moral truths, generate moral knowledge, or serve as a practical guide for ethical decision making. If one seeks a way to justify ethical principles or resolve moral dilemmas, appealing to God does not improve the situation; supernatural explanations, including those invoking divine commands or nature, fail to meet the criteria of explanatory adequacy. I conclude by suggesting a secular approach to ethics—drawing from Ted Schick’s inference to the best action—that does not depend on God’s existence. Ultimately, if moral nihilism is a concern, God’s existence offers no solution. If ethics is possible at all, it is possible regardless of whether God exists.

Exploring the relationship between threat-related changes in anxiety, attention focus, and postural control

Individuals report directing attention toward and away from multiple sources when standing under height-related postural threat, and these changes in attention focus are associated with postural control modifications. As it is unknown whether these changes generalize to other types of threat situations, this study aimed to quantify changes in attention focus and examine their relationship with postural control changes in response to a direct threat to stability. Eighty young adults stood on a force plate fixed to a translating platform. Three postural threat conditions were created by altering the expectation of, and prior experience with, a postural perturbation: no threat of perturbation, threat without perturbation experience, and threat with perturbation experience. When threatened, participants were more anxious and reported directing more attention to movement processes, threat-related stimuli, and self-regulatory strategies, and less to task-irrelevant information. Postural sway amplitude and frequency increased with threat, with greater increases in frequency and smaller increases in amplitude observed with experience. Without experience, threat-related changes in postural control were accounted for by changes in anxiety; larger changes in anxiety were related to larger changes in sway amplitude. With experience, threat-related postural control changes were accounted for by changes in attention focus; increases in attention to movement processes were related to greater forward leaning and increases in sway amplitude, while increases in attention to self-regulatory strategies were related to greater increases in sway frequency. Results suggest that relationships between threat-related changes in anxiety, attention focus, and postural control depend on the context associated with the threat.

Transient leading-edge vortex development on a wing rolling in uniform flow

Plenoptic particle image velocimetry and surface pressure measurements were used to analyse the early development of leading-edge vortices (LEVs) created by a flat-plate wing of aspect ratio 2 rolling in a uniform flow parallel to the roll axis. Four cases were constructed by considering two advance coefficients, $J=0.54$ and 1.36, and two wing radii of gyration, $R_g/c=2.5$ and 3.25. In each case, the wing pitch angle was articulated such as to achieve an angle of attack of $33^{\\circ }$ at the radius of gyration of the wing. The sources and sinks of vorticity were quantified for a chordwise rectangular control region, using a vorticity transport framework in a non-inertial coordinate system attached to the wing. Within this framework, terms associated with Coriolis acceleration provide a correction to tilting and spanwise convective fluxes measured in the rotating frame and, for the present case, have insignificant values. For the baseline case ($J=0.54, R_g/c=3.25$), three distinct spanwise regions were observed within the LEV, with distinct patterns of vortex evolution and vorticity transport mechanisms in each region. Reducing the radius of gyration to $R_g/c=2.5$ resulted in a more stable vortex with the inboard region extending over a broader spanwise range. Increasing advance ratio eliminated the conical vortex, resulting in transport processes resembling the mid-span region of the baseline case. Although the circulation of the LEV system was generally stronger at the larger advance coefficient, the shear-layer contribution was diminished.
