Strain-Induced Selective Growth in 1.5% Temper-Rolled Fe∼1%Si

Strain-induced selective growth was investigated in a 1.5% temper-rolled Fe∼1%Si alloy using the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. The EBSD technique was used to quantify the presence of orientation spreads within grains and to show that this particular case of selective growth can be directly related to differences in stored energy as reflected in the geometrically necessary dislocation content. The differences in stored energy were sufficient to give rise to selective growth as evidenced by bi-modal grain sizes.

Oxygen-free high conducting copper wires drawn to true strains of 2.3, 3.1, and 3.6 exhibit inhomogeneity in the form of three distinct concentric regimes: the inner core, the midsection, and the outer region. While the microtexture of the inner core was dominated by a strong + weak duplex fiber texture, the midsection and the outer region had a comparatively weaker texture. An upper bound plasticity modeling and the nanohardness measurement revealed that the midsection was the most strained region. Upon annealing at 170 °C, the 2.3-strained wire did not recrystallize, whereas the 3.1- and 3.6-strained wires exhibited partial recrystallization. For the 3.6 wire, the inner core was unrecrystallized, while the midsection and outer region recrystallized with strong + weak fiber texture. The recrystallized grains were classified as type “A” grains, which grew laterally with //DD orientation, and type “B” grains, which generally grew axially with //DD orientation.

Necrotising myositis is a rare but devastating consequence of invasive group A streptococcal infection. Early presentation could be non-specific, and clinicians might have a low index of clinical suspicion due to the rarity of cases. Prompt recognition and early aggressive surgical management are the cornerstones of treatment to reduce morbidity and mortality. We report the case of a child aged 5 years with necrotising myositis and highlight the successes and potential pitfalls in the treatment of this life-threatening condition.

CuInSe2 thin-film deposition on flexible plastic substrate: electrolyte recirculation rate and deposition potential effects

Copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2; CIS) layer was electrolytically plated from an aqueous medium at room temperature onto electroless nickel deposited on flexible plastic (Kapton). The CIS depositions were carried out under constant deposition potentials (−0.5 to −1.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and at various electrolyte flow rates (0.3 to 1.5 ml/s) under constant applied current. The resulting thin films were characterized using atomic force microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The surface morphology and the atomic composition of the deposited CIS film were found to be influenced by the deposition potential under potential control and the electrolyte recirculation rate under current control. Low electrolyte flow rates under constant current control and high cathodic deposition potential under voltage control favor the deposition of indium. CIS films of uniform deposit, smoother surfaces, and with better adhesion properties are favored by moderate electrolyte recirculation rate. At a current density of 0.6 mA/cm2, the electrolyte recirculation rate required to achieve ideal CIS atomic composition was found to be 1.0 ml/s in such a setting. The crystallinity of the film improved after annealing for 2 h at 390 °C under argon atmosphere.

A stereological analysis of electron backscatter diffraction data has been used to measure the five-parameter grain boundary character distribution of chemically modified 316LN stainless steel exposed to both elevated and cryogenic temperature. The results were analyzed to determine if the thermal treatments induced any significant changes in the overall grain boundary character distribution and fractional twin density. The results of this study show that the grain boundary character distribution of this steel is very similar to other FCC polycrystals and not affected by typical thermal treatments used in processing or the cryogenic temperatures employed during service.

Let Her Go: Reinventing Black Characters in English Black Crime Fiction
This practice-based PhD submission consists of an original novel (80% weighting) of 70,000 words and a reflective critical thesis (20% weighting) of 25,000 words. The novel, Let Her Go, seeks to expand the crime fiction genre, following the search of Saul Hanley for the reasons his daughter, Tishana, died of a drugs overdose. The work combines crime-fiction tropes with elements of the road novel and the quest, whilst allowing its central character an interior presence that explores consciousness in ways that deepen our realization of human indeterminacy and complicity whilst also questioning and re-positioning the nature of crime and criminality. The thesis opens with a series of definitions: of ‘black’ and of ‘crime fiction’. A short analysis of problematics and a periodized history of English black crime fiction follow. The thesis then examines the ways in which Let Her Go departs from pre-existing works, focusing on (a) abandonments of existing tropes, fixations and locations in the examined black crime fiction and (b) modifications and adoptions of other technical and thematic elements. The use of stream-of-consciousness and epistolary techniques is explored and the influence within the writing process of habitus, hybridity and related innovations of location. It then examines the influence of ideas drawn from criminology and jurisprudence, as well as intersections of class and gender within the novel. The thesis concludes with an assessment of the success of Let Her Go’s attempt at reinvention of black characters in crime fiction.

Understanding the failure of Bioglass 8625 transponder capsules used in tracking blackbuck antelopes

Radio‐frequency identification (RFID) systems are used in a variety of applications, with animal tracking as one of them. In order to be safely implanted in animals, the RFID systems are embedded in Bioglass 8625 capsules. Although these Bioglass transponder chips have proven to be successful in household pets, there is a major concern regarding their use in male Blackbuck antelope where a significant level of failure has been reported. Since there is limited mechanical data on Bioglass 8625, this study was undertaken to provide a preliminary assessment of the reason for the failure. Three‐point bend test and finite element analysis (FEA), based on three possible loading configurations during male Blackbuck antelope fighting, were used in this investigation. The flexural strength of the capsule was found to be 250 ± 50 MPa. FEA analysis, using the peak fighting force (456 N) of the Blackbuck antelope, showed that the stress distribution resulting from all three loading configurations greatly exceeded the flexural strength of the Bioglass 8625 capsules. It is reasonable to conclude that the Bioglass 8625 capsule is highly likely to fracture under the current condition of utilization. Based on FEA simulation, a capsule with increased wall thickness has been recommended. Although Bioglass transponder chips have proven to be successful in household pets, there is a major concern regarding their use in male Blackbuck antelope where a significant level of failure has been reported. Due to the limited amount of mechanical data available on Bioglass 8625, three‐point bend tests were performed on a set of Bioglass capsules, which yielded a flexural strength of 250 ± 50 MPa. Finite element analysis, using the peak fighting force of the Blackbuck antelope in three loading configurations and on two geometries (standard and thicker capsule), indicated that a thicker Bioglass 8625 capsule is recommended as the standard capsule is highly likely to fracture under the current condition of utilization.
