A grey DEMATEL approach to develop third-party logistics provider selection criteria
Purpose – Third-party logistics (3PL) plays a main role in supply chain management and, as a result, has experienced remarkable growth. The demand for 3PL providers has become a main approach for companies to offer better customer service, reduce costs, and gain competitive advantage. This paper identifies important criteria for 3PL provider selection and evaluation, and the purpose of this paper is to select 3PL providers from the viewpoint of firms which were already outsourcing their logistics services. Design/methodology/approach – This study utilized the grey decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method to develop 3PL provider selection criteria. Because human judgments are vague and complicated to depict by accurate numerical values, the grey system theory is used to handle this problem. Findings – The findings revealed the structure and interrelationships between criteria and identified the main criteria for 3PL provider selection. The most important criteria for 3PL provider selection are on time delivery performance, technological capability, financial stability, human resource policies, service quality, and customer service, respectively. Practical implications – The paper’s results help managers of automotive industries, particularly in developing countries, to outsource logistics activities to 3PL providers effectively and to create a significant competitive advantage. Originality/value – The main contributions of this paper are twofold. First, this paper proposes an integrated grey DEMATEL method to consider interdependent relationships among the 3PL provider selection criteria. Second, this study is one of the first studies to consider 3PL provider selection in a developing country like Iran.
Understanding the key determinants of IoT adoption for the digital transformation of the food and beverage industry
PurposeResearch on the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained momentum in various industry contexts. However, the literature lacks broad empirical evidence on the factors that influence users' intention to adopt this cutting-edge technology, especially in the food and beverage industry (F&BI) – a significant yet unexplored setting. Therefore, the authors aim to extend the “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT)” model by coupling it with perceived collaborative advantage, organizational inertia and perceived cost and explore the key determinants of IoT adoption for the digital transformation of the F&BI.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a cross-sectional quantitative approach, where a sample of 307 usable responses was drawn from the senior managers of the Australian F&BI.FindingsThe authors have found that performance expectancy, perceived collaborative advantage, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions have a strong positive influence on the behavioural intention to adopt IoT for the digital transformation of the F&BI. Furthermore, while high perceived costs and organizational inertia are often considered negative factors in adopting new technology, our results reveal the insignificant influence of these factors on the adoption of IoT, which is interesting. The findings also suggest that age and voluntariness significantly moderate most of the relationships, while gender is an insignificant moderator.Originality/valueThe study provides several novel insights into the existing body of knowledge by extending the UTAUT model with three variables and applying it in a unique context.
A chance constrained fuzzy goal programming approach for perishable pharmaceutical supply chain network design
In this paper, a bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model is formulated for designing a perishable pharmaceutical supply chain network under demand uncertainty. The objectives of the proposed model are to simultaneously minimize the total cost of the network and lost demand amount. The proposed model is multi-product and multi-period and includes simultaneous facilities location, vehicle routing, and inventory management; hence, it is considered an operational-strategic model. Procurement discounts, the lifetime of products, storing products for future periods, lost demand, and soft and hard time windows are the main assumptions of the proposed model. A novel hybrid approach, based on fuzzy theory, chance constrained programming, and goal programming approach, is developed for solving the proposed bi-objective model. The validity of the proposed model and developed solution approach is evaluated using data from Avonex, a prefilled syringe distribution chain serving 11 health centers in Tehran. The proposed model indicates that some lost sales exist, and to overcome the lost sales, the case company needs to invest a little more in addition to the initial investment of around 2 billion tomans. The results obtained from implementing the model and the sensitivity analysis, using real-world data, confirm the efficiency and validity of the proposed mathematical model and solution approach.
Optimal channel selection considering price competition and information sharing under demand uncertainty
PurposeThe rapid development of the Internet has led to an increasingly significant role for E-commerce business. This study examines how the green supply chain (GSC) operates on the E-commerce online channel (resell mode and agency mode) and the traditional offline channel with information sharing under demand uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachThis study builds a multistage game model that considers the manufacturer selling green products through different channels. On the traditional offline channel, the competing retailers decide whether to share demand signals. Regarding the resale mode of E-commerce online channel, just E-tailer 1 determines whether to share information and decides the retail price. In the agency mode, the manufacturer decides the retail price directly, and E-tailer 2 sets the platform rate.FindingsThis study reveals that information accuracy is conducive to information value and profits on both channels. Interestingly, the platform fee rate in agency mode will inhibit the effect of a positive demand signal. Information sharing will cause double marginal effects, and price competition behavior will mitigate such effects. Additionally, when the platform fee rate is low, the manufacturer will select the E-commerce online channel for operation, but the retailers' profit is the highest in the traditional channel.Originality/valueThis research explores the interplay between different channel structures and information sharing in a GSC, considering price competition and demand uncertainty. Besides, we also considered what behaviors and factors will amplify or transfer the effect of double marginalization.
Emergence of open supply chain management: the role of open innovation in the future smart industry using digital twin network
Alongside many research studies that have been presented in the open innovation domain and smart manufacturing systems, there is a research gap on integrating the outbound individual capabilities with the new smart manufacturing machines to satisfy the customers' varied and uncertain requirements. In this paper, Open Supply Chain Management (OSCM) is conceptualized as a new paradigm in the evolution of SCM. Companies can benefit from integrated physical and conceptual resources to promote efficiency and flexibility throughout the supply chain's main processes, including supplying, manufacturing, distributing, and marketing. The OSCM concept is undergoing several drivers including crowdsourcing, open innovation, Industry 4.0, cloud manufacturing, Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and the digital twin that appeared in the last decades. To validate OSCM in practice, a subset of this concept is investigated to incorporate the designing process with supply chain production planning applying a digital twin network. Additionally, dealing with epistemic uncertainty, a fuzzy tactical planning model is developed, and to study the developed model in more detail, an industrial study in the clothes manufacturing industry is employed. The results illustrate that the products' designing cost consists of only 2% of the supply chain total cost.
Net-zero economy research in the field of supply chain management: a systematic literature review and future research agenda
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to systematically review the state-of-art literature on the net-zero economy in the field of supply chain management.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review of 79 articles published from 2009 to 2021 has been conducted to minimise the researchers' bias and maximise the reliability and replicability of the study.FindingsThe thematic analysis reveals that studies in the field of net-zero economy have mostly been done on decarbonisation in the supply chain, emission control and life cycle analysis and environmental and energy management. The findings highlight the strong positive association between digitalisation, circular economy and resources optimization practices with net-zero economy goals. The study also addresses the challenges linked with the net-zero economy at the firm and country levels.Research limitations/implicationsPractitioners in companies and academics might find this review valuable as this study reviews, classifies and analyses the studies, outlines the evolution of literature and offers directions for future studies using the theory, methodology and context (TMC) framework.Originality/valueThis is the first study that uses a structured approach to analyse studies done in the net-zero field by assessing publications from 2009 to 2021.
Application of data envelopment analysis models in supply chain management: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Supply chain management aims to designing, managing and coordinating material/product, information and financial flows to fulfill the customer requirements at low costs and thereby increasing supply chain profitability. In the last decades, data envelopment analysis has become the main topic of interest as a mathematical tool to evaluate supply chain management. While, various data envelopment analysis models have been suggested to measure and evaluate the supply chain management, there is a lack of research regarding to systematic literature review and classification of study in this field. Regarding this, some major databases including Web of Science and Scopus have been nominated and systematic and meta-analysis method which called “PRISMA” has been proposed. Accordingly, a review of 75 published articles appearing in 35 scholarly international journals and conferences between 1996 and 2016 have been attained to reach a comprehensive review of data envelopment analysis models in evaluation supply chain management. Consequently, the selected published articles have been categorized by author name, the year of publication, technique, application area, country, scope, data envelopment analysis purpose, study purpose, research gap and contribution, results and outcome, and journals and conferences in which they appeared. The results of this study indicated that areas of supplier selection, supply chain efficiency and sustainable supply chain have had the highest frequently than other areas. In addition, results of this review paper indicated that data envelopment analysis showed great promise to be a good evaluative tool for future evaluation on supply chain management, where the production function between the inputs and outputs was virtually absent or extremely difficult to acquire. The facility of multiple inputs and multiple outputs of the data envelopment analysis model was definitely an attractive one to most researchers and, therefore, the data envelopment analysis procedure had found many applications beyond supply chain management into organization and industry.
The contingency effects of dependence relationship on supply chain information sharing and agility
PurposeSupply chain agility (SCA) is the primary strategy for reducing impacts and quick recovery when supply chains experience a disruption risk, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This study will investigate how SCA can be achieved through supply chain information sharing (SCIS) under the different dependence relationships (DR) with suppliers or customers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate this issue.Design/methodology/approachBased on information process and resource dependency theories, this study constructs and empirically tests a proposed model of the relationships amongst the three dimensions of SCIS and the two areas of SCA and the contingency effects of two types of DR on those relationships. Using a dataset collected from 400 manufacturers in China, the authors tested this theoretical model using multi-group and structural path analysis.FindingsThe results of the structural path and multi-group analyses show that (1) all dimensions of SCIS are positively correlated with both areas of SCA and (2) dependence on the supplier and dependence on the customer have completely different impacts on the relationship between SCIS and SCA.Originality/valueThis study can improve the understanding of the multidimensional concepts of SCIS and SCA and relationships between them under two different DR conditions in the Chinese manufacturing setting. It contributes to IS and the SCA literature and provides theoretically driven and empirical explanations for the diverse dynamics between the dependence on the supplier and customer.
A Benders decomposition approach for a real case supply chain network design with capacity acquisition and transporter planning: wheat distribution network
This paper considers a real case problem of supply chain network design inspired from a wheat distribution network in Iran. It generates a network with capacity acquisition and fleet management. The problem first is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model. Then, a logic-based Benders decomposition algorithm is appropriately developed as the solution methodology. In the presented algorithm, the problem is decomposed into two models of master and subproblem. The master problem is improved by means of the preprocessing and valid inequalities. Moreover, three Benders cuts, one optimality and two feasibility cuts, are developed for the algorithm. The general and relative performance of the model and algorithm is experimentally evaluated. The wheat distribution system of Iran is considered here as the case study of this research. The model is developed based on Iran’s wheat distribution system. All the results show that the algorithm significantly outperforms the mathematical model of the case study. For example, the algorithm solves 95% of the tested instances to optimality, yet the model solves 29%.
Maturity Models in Supply Chain Sustainability: A Systematic Literature Review
A systematic literature review of supply chain maturity models with sustainability concerns is presented. The objective is to give insights into methodological issues related to maturity models, namely the research objectives; the research methods used to develop, validate and test them; the scope; and the main characteristics associated with their design. The literature review was performed based on journal articles and conference papers from 2000 to 2015 using the SCOPUS, Emerald Insight, EBSCO and Web of Science databases. Most of the analysed papers have as main objective the development of maturity models and their validation. The case study is the methodology that is most widely used by researchers to develop and validate maturity models. From the sustainability perspective, the scope of the analysed maturity models is the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) and environmental dimension, focusing on a specific process (eco-design and new product development) and without a broad SC perspective. The dominant characteristics associated with the design of the maturity models are the maturity grids and a continuous representation. In addition, results do not allow identifying a trend for a specific number of maturity levels. The comprehensive review, analysis, and synthesis of the maturity model literature represent an important contribution to the organization of this research area, making possible to clarify some confusion that exists about concepts, approaches and components of maturity models in sustainability. Various aspects associated with the maturity models (i.e., research objectives, research methods, scope and characteristics of the design of models) are explored to contribute to the evolution and significance of this multidimensional area.
