Seismic phase picking is a fundamental task in seismology that is crucial for event detection and earthquake cataloging; however, manual analysis is impractical given the scale of modern seismic networks. We present SegPhase, a novel seismic arrival time picking model designed to efficiently process large-scale seismic data recorded by dense seismic networks in Japan. In contrast to conventional convolution-based models, SegPhase employs a hierarchical vision transformer structure that utilizes multi-head self-attention to dynamically focus on important waveform features, such as P- and S-wave onsets, noise, and coda waves. Compared to PhaseNet, the most widely used deep learning model, SegPhase improved arrival time match rates by ~ 11% and detected ~ 15% more events in continuous waveform tests, particularly enhancing the detection of small-magnitude events. Benchmark evaluations demonstrated that SegPhase achieved high classification performance in identifying P- and S-waves. We also examined the threshold of the output probability values when applying SegPhase to continuous waveforms for which the optimal threshold was unknown. By lowering the threshold to 0.1, we observed an increase in the number of detected events without noticeable changes in the hypocenter location error and observed–calculated discrepancies. This was achieved by more effectively utilizing high-probability picks, which further improved phase association. Based on these results, we recommend a threshold of 0.1 to enhance event detection while maintaining accurate arrival times. Our findings demonstrate that SegPhase enables robust arrival picking across diverse datasets and supports high-resolution seismic monitoring.

Stress field in northeastern Japan and its relationship with faults of recent earthquakes
2024
Inversion tectonics, in which old normal faults act as reverse faults in current stress fields, are frequently observed in northeastern Japan (Tohoku District); however, the conditions that control these fault activities remain unclear. To improve the identification of faults that are more favorable to slip under current stress conditions, the regional fault mechanisms in the Tohoku District must be better understood. The stress field in the Tohoku District and the likelihood of fault activities were thus estimated using slip tendency (ST) analysis. The results show that in the eastern margin of the Japan Sea (EMJS), the reverse fault type is dominant in the stress field. The maximum horizontal direction changes clockwise from E–W to NW–SE from the northern to the southern regions and counterclockwise from NW–SE to E–W from the Japan Sea to the inland area. In the Tohoku inland area, the estimated direction of the maximum horizontal axis changed after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, from E–W to WNW–ESE. ST values were calculated for seven events in the EMJS area. To avoid the influence of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake, only stress field data prior to the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake were used to determine ST values for four of the events in the Tohoku inland area. The results showed eastward-dipping fault planes with low dip angles (approximately 30°–45°) and large ST values (approximately > 0.7). The large ST values indicate that the stress field fault is favorable to slip and the results were consistent with the actual fault plane in the EMJS area. However, in the Tohoku inland area and the southern part of fault model of the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-Oki earthquake, fault planes with large ST values were found to be inconsistent with the slipped fault plane, thus indicating that slipping was unfavorable. The regional differences are consistent with the volcano distribution and thus, the fluid supply from volcanic activity may have helped the fault slip under difficult stress conditions.

Spatiotemporal variations in the stress field in the northeasternmost part of the NE Japan arc: constraints from microearthquakes
2020
We determined focal mechanism solutions of microearthquakes and examined the stress field in the low-seismicity region from southern Hokkaido to eastern Aomori, NE Japan. The stress fields determined in this study comprise (1) a reverse faulting stress regime in southern Hokkaido with the axis of maximum compressional stress (σ1) being sub-horizontal and trending WNW–ESE, and (2) a stress regime in eastern Aomori to Tsugaru Strait that shows temporal variations and differential stress of less than tens of MPa. The spatiotemporal variation in stress from eastern Aomori to Tsugaru Strait might reflect the effects of the upper-plate bending and the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. It also indicates that the compressional stress caused by the descending Pacific plate is relatively weak, which is similar to other areas in eastern parts of the NE Japan arc.

The tectonic stress field was investigated in and around the aftershock area of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake (MJMA = 6.7) occurred on 6 September 2018. We deployed 26 temporary seismic stations in the aftershock area for approximately 2 months and located 1785 aftershocks precisely. Among these aftershocks, 894 focal mechanism solutions were determined using the first-motion polarity of P wave from the temporary observation and the permanent seismic networks of Hokkaido University, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and High Sensitivity Seismograph Network Japan (Hi-net). We found that (1) the reverse faulting and the strike-slip faulting are dominant in the aftershock area, (2) the average trend of P- and T-axes is 78° ± 33° and 352° ± 51°, respectively, and (3) the average plunge of P- and T-axes is 25° ± 16° and 44° ± 20°, respectively: the P-axis is close to be horizontal and the T-axis is more vertical than the average of the P-axes. We applied a stress inversion method to the focal mechanism solutions to estimate a stress field in the aftershock area. As a result, we found that the reverse fault type stress field is dominant in the aftershock area. An axis of the maximum principal stress (σ1) has the trend of 72° ± 7° and the dipping eastward of 19° ± 4° and an axis of the intermediate principal stress (σ2) has the trend of 131° ± 73° and the dipping southward of 10° ± 9°, indicating that both of σ1- and σ2-axes are close to be horizontal. An axis of the minimum principal stress (σ3) has the dipping westward of 67° ± 6° that is close to be vertical. The results strongly suggest that the reverse-fault-type stress field is predominant as an average over the aftershock area which is in the western boundary of the Hidaka Collision Zone. The average of the stress ratio R = (σ1 − σ2)/(σ1 − σ3) is 0.61 ± 0.13 in the whole aftershock area. Although not statistically significant, we suggest that R decreases systematically as the depth is getting deep, which is modeled by a quadratic polynomial of depth.

Stationarity of aftershock activities of the 2016 Central Tottori Prefecture earthquake revealed by dense seismic observation
2020
To clarify the relationship between earthquake occurrence and fluid, we analyzed data from a dense aftershock-observation network with 69 high-gain short-period seismographs installed immediately after the mainshock occurrence (October 21) in the aftershock area of the 2016 Central Tottori Prefecture earthquake. We determined the hypocenters and focal mechanisms of the aftershocks very precisely in the period from October 22 to December 15. We then investigated the temporal changes in the spatial distributions of hypocenters and T-axis azimuths of focal mechanisms. The distributions of aftershock hypocenters and T-axis azimuths are basically temporally stable, except those in limited portions in the shallow layer near the western edge of the aftershock area, where rapid decrease of aftershocks with T-axis azimuths of WSW to west was observed. If fluid rises from the lower crust due to fault rupture, the locations of aftershocks and focal mechanisms may change over time, especially in the deepest part of the aftershock region. However, the temporal change in these parameters was not apparent at depth. These observations suggest that the aftershock activity of the Central Tottori Prefecture earthquake was controlled mainly by stress concentration rather than strength reduction due to high fluid pressure.

Solidified magma reservoir derived from active source seismic experiments in the Aira caldera, southern Kyushu, Japan
2023
The Aira caldera, located in southern Kyushu, Japan, originally formed 100 ka, and its current shape reflects the more recent 30 ka caldera-forming eruptions (hereafter, called the AT eruptions). This study aimed to delineate the detailed two-dimensional (2D) seismic velocity structure of the Aira caldera down to approximately 15 km, by means of the travel-time tomography analysis of the seismic profile across the caldera acquired in 2017 and 2018. A substantial structural difference in thickness in the subsurface low-velocity areas in the Aira caldera between the eastern and western sides, suggest that the Aira caldera comprises at least two calderas, identified as the AT and Wakamiko calderas. The most interesting feature of the caldera structure is the existence of a substantial high-velocity zone (HVZ) with a velocity of more than 6.8 km/s at depths of about 6–11 km beneath the central area of the AT caldera. Because no high ratio of P- to S-wave velocity zones in the depth range were detected from the previous three-dimensional velocity model beneath the AT caldera region, we infer that the HVZ is not an active magma reservoir but comprises a solidified and cool remnant. In addition, a poorly resolved low-velocity zone around 15 km in depth suggests the existence of a deep active magma reservoir. By superimposing the distribution of the known pressure sources derived from the observed ground inflation and the volcanic earthquake distribution onto the 2D velocity model, the magma transportation path in the crust was imaged. This image suggested that the HVZ plays an important role in magma transportation in the upper crust. Moreover, we estimated that the AT magma reservoir in the 30 ka Aira caldera-forming eruptions has the total volume of 490 km3 DRE and is distributed in a depth range of 4–11 km.

The relationship between S-wave reflectors and deep low-frequency earthquakes in the northern Kinki district, southwestern Japan
2018
We conducted high-resolution reflection analysis of data from 168 seismic stations with an average spacing of about 5 km, in northern Kinki district, southwestern Japan. Reflection analysis has previously been conducted in this region, assuming a homogeneous horizontal structure, resulting in an inclined planar zone of high relative reflection strengths (S-wave reflector). However, if the reflector is actually inclined, the location of the S-wave reflector differs from that of an assumed homogeneous horizontal structure. Hence, this study conducted high-resolution reflection analysis to determine the accurate location of the S-wave reflector. We confirm the previously reported S-wave reflector (reflector W). Furthermore, we detected the accurate location of the S-wave reflector and obtained more detailed results that revealed a second S-wave reflection structure (reflector E) to the east of reflector W, in an area that has not be imaged by previous studies. The northern edges of reflector E and reflector W are located near different hypocentral areas of deep low-frequency earthquakes (DLFs). Reflector W exists along the Kyoto Nishiyama fault zone, and its position appears to change along the fault zone as it deepens. Similarly, reflector E exists along the Hanaore and Biwako Seigan fault zones and its position appears to change along these fault zones. The reflector W and reflector E are imaged as separate S-wave reflectors in deeper regions, but they coalesce in shallower regions. According to previous studies, crustal fluid by dehydration from the Philippine Sea plate exists near these epicenters and we infer that this crustal fluid causes DLFs and forms S-wave reflectors.

The 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake (M JMA = 6.7) was triggered by a strike-slip faulting in a stepover segment: insights from the aftershock distribution and the focal mechanism solution of the main shock
2019
The Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake (MJMA = 6.7) occurred on September 6, 2018, in the Hokkaido corner region where the Kurile and northeastern Japan island arcs meet. We relocated aftershocks of this intraplate earthquake immediately after the main shock by using data from a permanent local seismic network and found that aftershock depths were concentrated from 20 to 40 km, which is extraordinarily deep compared with other shallow intraplate earthquakes in the inland area of Honshu and Kyushu, Japan. Further, we found that the aftershock area consists of three segments. The first segment is located in the northern part of the aftershock area, the second segment lies in the southern part, and the third segment forms a stepover between the other two segments. The hypocenter of the main shock, from which the rupture initiated, is located on the stepover segment. The centroid moment tensor solution for the main shock indicates a reverse faulting, whereas the focal mechanism solution determined by using the first-motion polarity of the P wave indicates strike-slip faulting. To explain this discrepancy qualitatively, we present a model in which the rupture started as a small strike-slip fault in the stepover segment of the aftershock area, followed by two large reverse faulting ruptures in the northern and southern segments.

After a large earthquake, many small earthquakes, called aftershocks, ensue. Additional large earthquakes typically do not occur, despite the fact that the large static stress near the edges of the fault is expected to trigger further large earthquakes at these locations. Here we analyse ~10,000 highly accurate focal mechanism solutions of aftershocks of the 2016 Mw 6.2 Central Tottori earthquake in Japan. We determine the location of the horizontal edges of the mainshock fault relative to the aftershock hypocentres, with an accuracy of approximately 200 m. We find that aftershocks rarely occur near the horizontal edges and extensions of the fault. We propose that the mainshock rupture was arrested within areas characterised by substantial stress relaxation prior to the main earthquake. This stress relaxation along fault edges could explain why mainshocks are rarely followed by further large earthquakes.

Using data from high-density seismic observation networks installed in the western Nagano Prefecture region in Japan, we precisely determined focal mechanisms and estimated the high-resolution stress field at a scale of 1 km. Almost all differences between observed and calculated slip directions (misfit) were smaller than the errors in focal mechanisms at grid points away from the mainshock fault. This finding clearly indicates that the estimated uniform stress suitably explains focal mechanisms in each subregion apart from the mainshock fault. Misfits are relatively large at grid points near the mainshock fault, but many of these misfits are smaller than the errors in focal mechanisms, and stress is regarded as uniform for a greater portion within each subregion. However, we found that focal mechanisms and
P
-axes varied widely and differed from each other for a short focal distance of 100 m. These results clearly show that stress can be regarded as uniform, but that strength is heterogeneous.
