Biosynthesis
1985
Biosynthesis of the diterpenes, α and β 4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diol, has been observed in detached, intact glandular heads from trichomes of Nicotiana tabacum, Tobacco Introduction 1068. This result shows directly that the glandular head portion of the trichome is capable of duvatrienediol biosynthesis. In additional experiments, all of the [14C] duvatrienediol formed from sodium [2-14C]acetate by leaf midrib sections was recovered with trichome exudate and surface washes. None was found in trichome stalk, epidermal or subepidermal tissue extracts. Also, removal of glandular heads and exudate from midrib sections reduced or eliminated duvatrienediol biosynthetic capacity. Together these results strongly suggest that glandular heads are the primary, and perhaps the only, site of duvatrienediol biosynthesis in this plant. Incubation of detached, intact glandular heads with sodium [14C]acetate in the dark or incubation in the light in the presence of DCMU reduced incorporation into duvatrienediols by 97%. These results suggest that chloroplasts which are abundant in glandular heads are involved in the biogenesis of these compounds.

Investigation of the sewer infrastructure cost differences between form based neighborhood developments and developments of conventional design in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
This study seeks to add to form based neighborhood development literature by presenting a empirical assessment of the sewer cost savings of compact neighborhoods over conventional suburban design forms in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster County is a state-wide leader in promoting form based neighborhood development, which is often championed as a tool to use land and fiscal resources more efficiently due to the way its design elements better utilize geographic space. The savings of infrastructure costs is often one of the assumed advantages of this type of development growth. While there is a rich normative literature on the economic benefits of form based neighborhood development, the empirical body of work which assesses these benefits is quite small. This paper contributes to the empirical literature by presenting a quantified assessment of the economic impact of development design on sewer infrastructure at the neighborhood level. Using neighborhood level data, the analysis estimates the relationship between infrastructure and the physical characteristics of each neighborhood using the method of Ordinary Least Squares Regression (OLS). This analysis found that both neighborhood design (Form) and lot size had a statistically significant impact on the amount of sewer line utilized. This led to the following conclusions: firstly, neighborhoods built at higher densities and with smaller average lot sizes are shown to require less infrastructure, and second, there is evidence that communities built with a greater attention to form result in more efficient use of infrastructure. Further research is needed to assess other implications of development design, for instance, social and/or economic implications.

2009
Since its identification in April 2009, an A(H1N1) virus containing a unique combination of gene segments from both North American and Eurasian swine lineages has continued to circulate in humans. The lack of similarity between the 2009 A(H1N1) virus and its nearest relatives indicates that its gene segments have been circulating undetected for an extended period. Its low genetic diversity suggests that the introduction into humans was a single event or multiple events of similar viruses. Molecular markers predictive of adaptation to humans are not currently present in 2009 A(H1N1) viruses, suggesting that previously unrecognized molecular determinants could be responsible for the transmission among humans. Antigenically the viruses are homogeneous and similar to North American swine A(H1N1) viruses but distinct from seasonal human A(H1N1).

Client perspectives on primary care integration in a rural-serving behavioral health center
2024
PurposeAdvancing behavioral health and primary care integration is a priority for helping clients overcome the complex health challenges impacting healthcare deserts like those in Arizona, United States of America (USA). This study aimed to explore the perspectives of people with a substance use disorder (SUD) on accessing integrated primary care (IPC) services in a rural-serving behavioral healthcare organization in Arizona.Design/methodology/approachClients from a behavioral health facility in Arizona (n = 10) diagnosed with SUDs who also accessed IPC participated in a 45-min semi-structured interview.FindingsThe authors identified six overarching themes: (1) importance of IPC for clients being treated for SUDs, (2) client low level of awareness of IPC availability at the facility, (3) strategies to increase awareness of IPC availability at the behavioral health facility, (4) cultural practices providers should consider in care integration, (5) attitudes and perceptions about the experience of accessing IPC and (6) challenges to attending IPC appointments. The authors also identified subthemes for most of the main themes.Originality/valueThis is the first study in rural Arizona to identify valuable insights into the experiences of people with SUDs accessing IPC, providing a foundation for future research in the region on care integration.

Background. The aim of this study was to determine risk factors for childhood sporadic reportable enteric infection (REI) caused by bacteria, specifically Campylobacter, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157, or Shigella (REI-B). Methods. Matched case-control study. Case patients aged <19 years who were reported to 3 Washington State county health departments and matched control subjects were interviewed from November 2003–November 2005. Matched odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by using conditional logistic regression. Population attributable risk percentages were calculated for exposures associated with infection. Results. Two hundred ninety-six case patients were matched to 580 control subjects. Aquatic recreation was the most important factor associated with all REI-Bs studied (beach water exposure [OR for Salmonella infection, 28.3 {CI, 7.2–112.2}; OR for Shigella infection, 14.5 {CI 1.5–141.0} or any recreational water exposure [OR for Campylobacter infection, 2.7 {CI, 1.5–4.8}; OR for Escherichia coli O157 infection, 7.4 {CI, 2.1–26.1}]). Suboptimal kitchen hygiene after preparation of raw meat or chicken (OR, 7.1 [CI, 2.1–24.1]) and consumption of food from restaurants were additional risks for Campylobacter infection. Infection with Salmonella was associated with the use of private wells as sources of drinking water (OR, 6.5 [CI, 1.4–29.7]), and the use of residential septic systems was a risk for both Salmonella (OR, 3.2 [CI, 1.3–7.8]) and E. coli (OR, 5.7 [CI, 1.2–27.2]) O157 infection. Conclusions. Overall, non-food exposures were as important as food-related exposures with regard to their contributions to the proportion of cases. Infection prevention efforts should address kitchen hygiene practices and non-food exposures, such as recreational water exposure, in addition to food-consumption risks.
