Constraints on the Polarized Dust and the Cosmic Microwave Background Using Bicep / Keck Array Series of Telescopes
2023
BK18 data consists of all the data taken by the Bicep2, Keck Array, and Bicep3 CMB polarization experiments, as well as publicly available WMAP and Planck maps. The Q/U maps reach depths of 2.8, 2.8 and 8.8 µKCMBarcmin at 95, 150, and 220 GHz respectively over an effective area of ~ 600 square degrees at 95 GHz and ~ 400 square degrees at 150 and 220 GHz. The likelihood analysis yields r < 0.036 at 95% confidence, with unbiased simulations yielding σ(r)=0.009. The multi-component model that is used in the likelihood analysis consists of lensed-ΛCDM, tensor modes, and polarize dust and synchrotron components. Foreground model consists of thirteen parameters, some of which are estimated in the likelihood analysis with priors derived from larger regions of sky from WMAP and Planck: amplitude, spectral index, and spatial index for dust and sync, as well as their spatial correlation; dust frequency decorrelation and tensor-to-scalar-ratio. Spectral index for dust emission no longer requires a prior taken from measurements on other regions of the sky.In the BK papers, EE spectra are not used to derive the model, however the spectra agree well with the assumption that EE/BB = 2 for dust. In this thesis we expand on this assumption, sharing the results for the EE/BB estimate for dust when this is a free parameter in the likelihood calculation. We use the map-based and spectral-based band difference approaches to include E-modes in the likelihood analysis. In the BK papers, dust parameters are assumed to be constant over the sky. We will go over the likelihood work on the spatial constraints for the dust spectral index to examine the validity of this assumption.

Electroweak model
2012
Recent improvements to OPUCEM, the tool for calculation of the contributions of various models to oblique parameters, are presented. OPUCEM is used to calculate the available parameter space for the four family Standard Model given the current electroweak precision data. It is shown that even with the restrictions on Higgs boson and new quark masses presented in the 2011 Autumn conferences, there is still enough space to allow a fourth generation with Dirac type neutrinos. For Majorana type neutrinos, the allowed parameter space is even larger. The electroweak precision data also appear to favor non-zero mixing between light and fourth generations, thus effectively reducing the current experimental limits on the masses of the new quarks, which assume that the mixing with the third generation is dominant. Additionally, disregarding the lack of a clear Higgs signal from the LHC and focusing only an electroweak precision data comptability, calculations with OPUCEM show that, the existing electroweak data are compatible with the presence of a 5th and also a 6th generation in certain regions of the parameter space.

We present the first constraints on multipole-dependent cosmic birefringence using CMB polarization data from the BK18 dataset, which combines observations from BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3 at frequencies of 95, 150, and 220 GHz. Photon coupling to an axion-like field leads to the rotation of CMB polarization, inducing non-zero EB cross-correlations. We show that a multipole-dependent rotation beta(l) imprints a distinct signature in the polarization spectra that can be constrained. Specifically, we consider an Early Dark Energy (EDE) scenario in which a pseudoscalar field couples to photons through a Chern-Simons interaction, generating a polarization rotation with multipole dependence. We introduce a phenomenological beta(l) as a step function, obtaining constraints on the step function size consistent with zero, with uncertainties less than 0.15 degrees (68% CL). In addition, using multi-frequency EE, BB, and EB cross-spectra, along with robust BICEP/Keck foreground treatment and likelihood framework, we derive constraints on the axion-photon coupling amplitude g for several choices of EDE parameters. For the baseline best-fit value f_EDE = 0.087 from the Planck 2018 analysis, we obtain g = 0.11 +/- 0.37 (68% CL), consistent with previous limits.

2024
The BICEP3 and BICEP Array polarimeters are small-aperture refracting telescopes located at the South Pole designed to measure primordial gravitational wave signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, predicted by inflation. Constraining the inflationary signal requires not only excellent sensitivity, but also careful control of instrumental systematics. Both instruments use antenna-coupled orthogonally polarized detector pairs, and the polarized sky signal is reconstructed by taking the difference in each detector pair. As a result, the differential response between detectors within a pair becomes an important systematic effect we must control. Additionally, mapping the intensity and polarization response in regions away from the main beam can inform how sidelobe levels affect CMB measurements. Extensive calibration measurements are taken in situ every austral summer for control of instrumental systematics and instrument characterisation. In this work, we detail the set of beam calibration measurements that we conduct on the BICEP receivers, from deep measurements of main beam response to polarized beam response and sidelobe mapping. We discuss the impact of these measurements for instrumental systematics studies and design choices for future CMB receivers.

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a significant cause of mortality and short- and long-term morbidities. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been shown to be the standard care for HIE of infants ≥36 weeks gestational age (GA), as it has been demonstrated to reduce the rates of mortality, and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aims to determine the incidence of HIE in our country, to assess the TH management in infants with HIE, and present short-term outcomes of these infants.
The Turkish Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Online Registry database was established for this multicenter, prospective, observational, nationally-based cohort study to evaluate the data of infants born at ≥34 weeks GA who displayed evidence of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) between March, 2020 and April 2022.
The incidence of HIE among infants born at ≥36 weeks GA (n = 965) was 2.13 per 1000 live births (517:242440), and accounting for 1.55% (965:62062) of all neonatal intensive care unit admissions. The rates of mild, moderate and severe HİE were 25.5% (n = 246), 58.9% (n = 568), and 15.6% (n = 151), respectively. Infants with severe HIE had higher rates of abnormal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and mortality (p<0.001). No significant difference in mortality and abnormal MRI results was found according to the time of TH initiation (<3 h, 3-6 h and >6 h) (p>0.05). TH was administered to 85 (34.5%) infants with mild HIE, and of those born of 34-35 weeks of GA, 67.4% (n = 31) received TH. A total of 58 (6%) deaths were reported with a higher mortality rate in infants born at 34-35 weeks of GA (OR 3.941, 95% Cl 1.446-10.7422, p = 0.007).
The incidence of HIE remained similar over time with a reduction in mortality rate. The timing of TH initiation, whether <3 or 3-6 h, did not result in lower occurrences of brain lesions on MRI or mortality. An increasing number of infants with mild HIE and late preterm infants with HIE are receiving TH; however, the indications for TH require further clarification. Longer follow-up studies are necessary for this vulnerable population.
