The First High Seas MPA Network
The achievements of the OSPAR Commission (the Commission) in the governance of the High Seas of the North-East Atlantic, as recorded in the Bergen Report, are of incalculable value. They provide a springboard from which other regional communities can launch programs to protect and sustainably use the ecosystems of the marine areas of the world lying outside national jurisdiction. The Commission has recognized the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the predominant legal basis for the management of the seas. The recognition by the Commission that cooperation is critical in achieving ecologically sustainable development in oceans is further reinforced by its decisions to cooperate with other regional and international organizations.
Defying Ocean's End
If humankind were given a mandate to do everything in our power to undermine the earth's functioning, we could hardly do a better job than we have in the past thirty years on the world's oceans, both by what we are putting into it-millions of tons of trash and toxic materials-and by what we are taking out of it-millions of tons of wildlife.
Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: Making Development Compatible with Conservation
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest system of coral reefs and associated life forms in the world, covering an area of some 300 000 km2off Australia's northeast coast. The Australian government has established a management regime over the area which provides for multiple use of this great system while ensuring that its natural qualities are protected. The paper describes the management regime, which is based on scientific research, public involvement and zoning of areas to separate incompatible activities and to reserve areas for the uses to which they are best suited.
A genome-wide association study for celiac disease identifies risk variants in the region harboring IL2 and IL21
We tested 310,605 SNPs for association in 778 individuals with celiac disease and 1,422 controls. Outside the HLA region, the most significant finding (rs13119723; P = 2.0 × 10 −7 ) was in the KIAA1109 - TENR - IL2 - IL21 linkage disequilibrium block. We independently confirmed association in two further collections (strongest association at rs6822844, 24 kb 5′ of IL21 ; meta-analysis P = 1.3 × 10 −14 , odds ratio = 0.63), suggesting that genetic variation in this region predisposes to celiac disease.
