Updating the industry standard stage rigging text for a new generation First published in 1987 and revised in 1997 and 2007, Stage Rigging Handbook remains the only book in any language that covers the design, operation, and maintenance of stage rigging equipment. Though often unnoticed, these systems are critical in both easing the workload of stage technicians and creating storytelling magic for the audience. This landmark text imparts the foundations for understanding and implementing rigging systems, such that upon completion of the book, the reader is ready to begin hands-on training and practice. Organized into four sections, the handbook combines research and practical experience to guide riggers through their work. It begins by explaining the construction and care of basic lifting media. Part two analyzes types of rigging systems; then the handbook details the forces that impact rigging, from Newtonian physics to calculating expansive modern systems. Finally, it presents day-to-day best safety practices, including brand new sections on risk assessment and fall protection. This reorganized and greatly expanded fourth edition of Jay O. Glerum's industry standard text updates much of the information in the previous editions with the addition of chapters on truss (the framework that supports lighting, screens, and other accessories), motorized chain hoists, hardware, and job safety, including fall protection systems. Award-winning production manager Shane Kelly preserves Glerum's voice while bringing fresh information to a new generation of riggers, supplementing the text with updated versions of earlier photographs and drawings as well as an additional one hundred illustrations. The handbook facilitates the development of a rigging practice rooted in safety, precision, and professionalism.
A 4-year study of hamstring injury outcomes in elite track and field using the British Athletics rehabilitation approach

ObjectivesThe British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification (BAMIC) correlates with return to play in muscle injury. The aim of this study was to examine hamstring injury diagnoses and outcomes within elite track and field athletes following implementation of the British Athletics hamstring rehabilitation approach.MethodsAll hamstring injuries sustained by elite track and field athletes on the British Athletics World Class Programme between December 2015 and November 2019 that underwent an MRI and had British Athletics medical team prescribed rehabilitation were included. Athlete demographics and specific injury details, including mechanism of injury, self-reported gait phase, MRI characteristics and time to return to full training (TRFT) were contemporaneously recorded.Results70 hamstring injuries in 46 athletes (24 women and 22 men, 24.6±3.7 years) were included. BAMIC grade and the intratendon c classification correlated with increased TRFT. Mean TRFT was 18.6 days for the entire cohort. Mean TRFT for intratendon classifications was 34±7 days (2c) and 48±17 days (3c). The overall reinjury rate was 2.9% and no reinjuries were sustained in the intratendon classifications. MRI variables of length and cross-sectional (CSA) area of muscle oedema, CSA of tendon injury and loss of tendon tension were associated with TRFT. Longitudinal length of tendon injury, in the intratendon classes, was not associated with TRFT.ConclusionThe application of BAMIC to inform hamstring rehabilitation in British Athletics results in low reinjury rates and favourable TRFT following hamstring injury. The key MRI variables associated with longer recovery are length and CSA of muscle oedema, CSA of tendon injury and loss of tendon tension.

Reactive sulfane sulfur species such as persulfides (RSSH) and H

are important redox regulators and closely linked to H
2
S signaling. However, the study of these species is still challenging due to their instability, high reactivity, and the lack of suitable donors to produce them. Herein we report a unique compound,
2H
-thiopyran-2-thione sulfine (TTS), which can specifically convert H
2
S to HSOH, and then to H
2
S
2
in the presence of excess H
2
S. Meanwhile, the reaction product
2H
-thiopyran-2-thione (TT) can be oxidized to reform TTS by biological oxidants. The reaction mechanism of TTS is studied experimentally and computationally. TTS can be conjugated to proteins to achieve specific delivery, and the combination of TTS and H
2
S leads to highly efficient protein persulfidation. When TTS is applied in conjunction with established H
2
S donors, the corresponding donors of H
2
S
2
(or its equivalents) are obtained. Cell-based studies reveal that TTS can effectively increase intracellular sulfane sulfur levels and compensate for certain aspects of sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) deficiency. These properties make TTS a conceptually new strategy for the design of donors of reactive sulfane sulfur species.

Injury epidemiology in professional ballet: a five-season prospective study of 1596 medical attention injuries and 543 time-loss injuries

ObjectivesTo describe the incidence rate, severity, burden and aetiology of medical attention and time-loss injuries across five consecutive seasons at a professional ballet company.MethodsMedical attention injuries, time-loss injuries and dance exposure hours of 123 professional ballet dancers (women: n=66, age: 28.0±8.3 years; men: n=57, age: 27.9±8.5 years) were prospectively recorded between the 2015/2016 and 2019/2020 seasons.ResultsThe incidence rate (per 1000 hours) of medical attention injury was 3.9 (95% CI 3.3 to 4.4) for women and 3.1 (95% CI 2.6 to 3.5) for men. The incidence rate (per 1000 hours) of time-loss injury was 1.2 (95% CI 1.0 to 1.5) for women and 1.1 (95% CI 0.9 to 1.3) for men. First Soloists and Principals experienced between 2.0–2.2 additional medical attention injuries per 1000 hours and 0.9–1.1 additional time-loss injuries per 1000 hours compared with Apprentices (p≤0.025). Further, intraseason differences were observed in medical attention, but not time-loss, injury incidence rates with the highest incidence rates in early (August and September) and late (June) season months. Thirty-five per cent of time-loss injuries resulted in over 28 days of modified dance training. A greater percentage of time-loss injuries were classified as overuse (women: 50%; men: 51%) compared with traumatic (women: 40%; men: 41%).ConclusionThis is the first study to report the incidence rate of medical attention and time-loss injuries in professional ballet dancers. Incidence rates differed across company ranks and months, which may inform targeted injury prevention strategies.

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction with a mortality rate of 10%. Interstitial nephritis, pneumonitis, myocarditis, meningitis, thyroiditis and pancreatitis are major causes of morbidity and mortality in this syndrome. Cessation of offending medication is paramount. There is paucity in high quality prospective studies guiding the treatment of DRESS, and there are no published therapeutic clinical trials in the treatment of corticosteroid refractory hypersensitivity myocarditis. The authors present a unique case of ciprofloxacin-induced DRESS with concurrent thyroiditis and refractory eosinophilic myocarditis that required mepolizumab and multiple immunosuppressants for successful treatment.

Signatures of cysteine oxidation on muscle structural and contractile proteins are associated with physical performance and muscle function in older adults: Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA)

Oxidative stress is considered a contributor to declining muscle function and mobility during aging; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly described. We hypothesized that greater levels of cysteine (Cys) oxidation on muscle proteins are associated with decreased measures of mobility. Herein, we applied a novel redox proteomics approach to measure reversible protein Cys oxidation in vastus lateralis muscle biopsies collected from 56 subjects in the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA), a community‐based cohort study of individuals aged 70 years and older. We tested whether levels of Cys oxidation on key muscle proteins involved in muscle structure and contraction were associated with muscle function (leg power and strength), walking speed, and fitness (VO2 peak on cardiopulmonary exercise testing) using linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, and body weight. Higher oxidation levels of select nebulin Cys sites were associated with lower VO2 peak, while greater oxidation of myomesin‐1, myomesin‐2, and nebulin Cys sites was associated with slower walking speed. Higher oxidation of Cys sites in key proteins such as myomesin‐2, alpha‐actinin‐2, and skeletal muscle alpha‐actin were associated with lower leg power and strength. We also observed an unexpected correlation (R = 0.48) between a higher oxidation level of eight Cys sites in alpha‐actinin‐3 and stronger leg power. Despite this observation, the results generally support the hypothesis that Cys oxidation of muscle proteins impairs muscle power and strength, walking speed, and cardiopulmonary fitness with aging. In this study, we applied a novel redox proteomics approach to quantitatively profile the levels of oxidation on protein cysteines in muscle tissue of older adults to identify signatures that may distinguish among varying degrees of mobility. In general, increased levels of Cys oxidation on key sarcomeric proteins were found to be negatively associated with muscle function, physical performance, and fitness.

Epidemiological Characteristics of Foot and Ankle Injuries in 2 Professional Ballet Companies: A 3-Season Cohort Study of 588 Medical Attention Injuries and 255 Time-Loss Injuries

Background:
The foot and ankle are often reported as the most common sites of injury in professional ballet dancers; however, epidemiological research focusing on foot and ankle injuries in isolation and investigating specific diagnoses is limited.
Purpose:
To investigate the incidence rate, severity, burden, and mechanisms of foot and ankle injuries that (1) required visiting a medical team (medical attention foot and ankle injuries; MA-FAIs) and (2) prevented a dancer from fully participating in all dance-related activities for at least 24 hours after the injury (time-loss foot and ankle injuries; TL-FAIs) in 2 professional ballet companies.
Study Design:
Descriptive epidemiological study.
Methods:
Foot and ankle injury data across 3 seasons (2016-2017 to 2018-2019) were extracted from the medical databases of 2 professional ballet companies. Injury-incidence rate (per dancer-season), severity, and burden were calculated and reported with reference to the mechanism of injury.
Results:
A total of 588 MA-FAIs and 255 TL-FAIs were observed across 455 dancer-seasons. The incidence rates of MA-FAIs and TL-FAIs were significantly higher in women (1.20 MA-FAIs and 0.55 TL-FAIs per dancer-season) than in men (0.83 MA-FAIs and 0.35 TL-FAIs per dancer-season) (MA-FAIs, P = .002; TL-FAIs, P = .008). The highest incidence rates for any specific injury pathology were ankle impingement syndrome and synovitis for MA-FAIs (women 0.27 and men 0.25 MA-FAIs per dancer-season) and ankle sprain for TL-FAIs (women 0.15 and men 0.08 TL-FAIs per dancer-season). Pointe work and jumping actions in women and jumping actions in men were the most common mechanisms of injury. The primary mechanism of injury of ankle sprains was jumping activities, but the primary mechanisms of ankle synovitis and impingement in women were related to dancing en pointe.
Conclusion:
The results of this study highlight the importance of further investigation of injury prevention strategies targeting pointe work and jumping actions in ballet dancers. Further research for injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies targeting posterior ankle impingement syndromes and ankle sprains are warranted.

The transplanting of juvenile and adult mussels onto soft sediments is an emerging technique for the ecological restoration of the biogenic habitat formed by mussels. While these habitats are often found within estuarine systems, the spatial suitability of these environments for restoration is poorly described. The dynamic and variable environmental conditions characteristic of estuaries could represent challenges to the persistence of restored mussel beds. To assess whether there are spatial differences in mussel responses to transplantation within an estuarine environment, six experimental mussel beds of adult green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) were established along an environmental gradient in a small estuarine harbour in northern New Zealand. Transplanted mussel beds were sampled immediately after installation and again at 3 and 9 months later. Minor differences in the density, length and condition index of mussels were identified among the six sites over the course of the study; however, their responses were typically similar across sites. These results suggest that these mussels have the capacity to establish themselves within estuarine environments and that their subsequent performance once transplanted onto the seafloor appears to be determined by other site-specific factors, such as the presence of predators and the degree of exposure to storm waves.

Synthesis and characterization of new unsymmetrical diglycolamide extractants for lanthanide ion partitioning: part one—straight-chain alkyl derivatives

Six novel unsymmetrical diglycolamide (UDGA) ligands have been synthesized and evaluated as solvent extraction reagents for the partitioning of lanthanide (Ln) ions from nitrate media. The partitioning of europium between aqueous phases of varying nitric acid concentrations and a UDGA organic phase has been characterized radiometrically. The stoichiometry and phase-transfer equilibrium constants of the Eu-UDGA complexes extracted into the organic phase have been reported. Luminescence spectroscopy investigations have established the relative stability and stoichiometry of the complexes in acetonitrile. These UDGA ligands have displayed enhanced interfacial activity, which has decreased the necessary equilibration time while maintaining high Ln distribution ratios.

Given the abundance of biomass resources in the Philippines, particularly in its agricultural sector, it becomes crucial to assess these resources for their potential in bioenergy production. A key aspect of this assessment is site suitability analysis, which considers various factors such as Road accessibility, Slope of land, water bodies, Built-up Areas, constrained areas, and Banana cultivation area. Notably, Davao del Norte boasts the largest banana plantation in the country, offering ample agricultural residues. With an increasing population residing at a considerable distance from these croplands, there is an opportunity for efficient electricity utilization. Therefore, this study employs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop a methodology for identifying suitable locations for biomass power plant development in Davao del Norte, Philippines. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is incorporated into the QGIS platform for the analysis. The municipality of Asuncion is the most suitable location for biomass power plant development, according to the results of this analysis.
