After her objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in July, Eilidh Wilcockson, a third year medical student at Newcastle University, received some surprising feedback: not about her clinical knowledge or examination technique, but about what she was wearing. Women’s “flaws,” including their busts, bottoms, sweat, hips, wet hair, dyed hair, big hair, bra straps, ankles, shoulders, arms, nails, earrings, skin, or makeup can, and will, be called out. If the transgression is not egregious or part of a long term pattern, it is surely right not to comment.

Modulating Behavior in C. elegans Using Electroshock and Antiepileptic Drugs
The microscopic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has emerged as a valuable model for understanding the molecular and cellular basis of neurological disorders. The worm offers important physiological similarities to mammalian models such as conserved neuron morphology, ion channels, and neurotransmitters. While a wide-array of behavioral assays are available in C. elegans, an assay for electroshock/electroconvulsion remains absent. Here, we have developed a quantitative behavioral method to assess the locomotor response following electric shock in C. elegans. Electric shock impairs normal locomotion, and induces paralysis and muscle twitching; after a brief recovery period, shocked animals resume normal locomotion. We tested electric shock responses in loss-of-function mutants for unc-25, which encodes the GABA biosynthetic enzyme GAD, and unc-49, which encodes the GABAA receptor. unc-25 and unc-49 mutants have decreased inhibitory GABAergic transmission to muscles, and take significantly more time to recover normal locomotion following electric shock compared to wild-type. Importantly, increased sensitivity of unc-25 and unc-49 mutants to electric shock is rescued by treatment with antiepileptic drugs, such as retigabine. Additionally, we show that pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), a GABAA receptor antagonist and proconvulsant in mammalian and C. elegans seizure models, increases susceptibility of worms to electric shock.

Investigating Self-Care Behaviors for Prelicensure Nursing Students: Baseline Findings
Background Prelicensure nursing students face multiple stressors specific to their nursing education. Due to the nursing shortage, identifying methods to mitigate stress in nursing students is a priority. Adding integrative health modalities to the prelicensure nursing curriculum may encourage student resiliency and well-being. Method A 3-year prospective repeated measures cohort trial for prelicensure nursing students entering one of three tracts was conducted at a southwestern United States university. Students were followed for four semesters of the nursing program and for 6 months after graduation. Valid and reliable measures were used to explore anxiety, depressive symptoms, stress, resilience, and self-care. Results Baseline findings showed a relationship between mental health and self-care. Conclusion The findings highlight several important points including the link between self-care and mental health. A significant positive correlation was observed between engaging in self-care activities and improved mental health indicators. [J Nurs Educ. 2025;64(7):440–444.]

Gut Microbiota Variation in Aging Dogs with Osteoarthritis
Gut microbiota composition plays a crucial role in host health and may be influenced by age and disease conditions. This study investigates the gut microbiota diversity of 175 dogs across three age groups (Junior (20–46 months, 43 dogs), Adult (47–92 months, 58 dogs), and Senior (93–168 months, 74 dogs), and examined the impact of osteoarthritis on microbial composition. Alpha diversity analysis using the Shannon and Chao1 indices were significant (p < 0.05) in Senior dogs Beta diversity analysis based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarity indices demonstrated substantial overlap in gut microbiota composition across age groups, with no significant clustering observed (p > 0.05). A second analysis compared the microbiota of 69 healthy dogs and 81 dogs affected by osteoarthritis (OA) in the three classes of age. No significant differences were shown for alpha diversity and beta diversity between healthy and OA dogs. This indicates that aging and osteoarthritis do not induce significant shifts in microbial beta diversity, although high inter-individual variability was noted. Junior dogs exhibited enrichment in Blautia, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Clostridium, while Adult dogs were characterized by higher abundances of Prevotella, Streptococcus, and Ruminococcaceae. Senior dogs had increased representation of Prevotella and Ruminococcus. In OA dogs, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Clostridiaceae, and Coprobacillus were significantly enriched in comparison to healthy dogs, suggesting potential microbiota shifts associated with osteoarthritis. Overall, these findings indicate that gut microbiota diversity varies across different life stages, specific bacterial taxa were differentially enriched in relation to age and OA. This study enhances our understanding of gut microbiota dynamics in dogs and provides insights into potential age- and disease-related microbial signatures.
The Relationship between Nurses’ Training and Perceptions of Electronic Documentation Systems
Electronic documentation systems have been widely implemented in the healthcare field. These systems have become a critical part of the nursing profession. This research examines how nurses’ general computer skills, training, and self-efficacy affect their perceptions of using these systems. A sample of 248 nurses was surveyed to examine their general computer skills, self-efficacy, and training in electronic documentation systems in nursing programs. We propose a model to investigate the extent to which nurses’ computer skills, self-efficacy, and training in electronic documentation influence perceptions of using electronic documentation systems in hospitals. The data supports a mediated model in which general computer skills, self-efficacy, and training influence perceived usefulness through perceived ease of use. The significance of these findings was confirmed through structural equation modeling. As the electronic documentation systems are customized for every organization, our findings suggest value in nurses receiving training to learn these specific systems in the workplace or during their internships. Doing so may improve patient outcomes by ensuring that nurses use the systems consistently and effectively.
