Pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. endophytic and a soil isolate against the squash beetle, Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)
Laboratory and field bioassays were conducted to evaluate the pathogenicity of an endophytic and a soil isolate of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. against different stages of squash beetle, Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Both isolates were identified by ITS rDNA sequence analysis. Both isolates were pathogenic to the squash beetle; however, their potential was different according to the conidia concentration and the exposure period. Three days post treatment, (100%) mortality rate was obtained, when the first and second larval instars were treated by the B. bassiana ES (soil isolate) compared to 83.67 and 72.60%, respectively when treated with the endophytic isolate. A percentage of 17.67% malformation occurred among the adults that emerged from treated pupae. The highest mortality percentage under field conditions were 28.67 and 22.33% for larvae and adults, respectively.
Pathogenicity of endogenous isolate of Paramyrothecium (=Myrothecium) roridum (Tode) L. Lombard & Crous against the squash beetle Epilachna chrysomelina (F.)
The squash beetle Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) is an important insect pest which causes severe damage to cucurbit plants in Iraq. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize an endogenous isolate of Myrothecium-like species from cucurbit plants and from soil in order to evaluate its pathogenicity to squash beetle. Paramyrothecium roridum (Tode) L. Lombard & Crous was isolated, its phenotypic characteristics were identified and ITS rDNA sequence analysis was done. The pathogenicity of P. roridum strain (MT019839) was evaluated at a concentration of 107 conidia · ml–1) water against larvae and adults of E. chrysomelina under laboratory conditions. The results revealed the pathogenicity of the isolate to larvae with variations between larvae instar responses. The highest mortality percentage was reported when the adults were placed in treated litter and it differed significantly from adults treated directly with the pathogen. Our results documented for the first time that P. roridum has potential as an insect pathogen.
Protestant Missionaries in the Levant
Through focusing on the unintended by-products of New England Puritanism as a cultural transplant in the Levant, this book explores the socio-historical forces which account for the failure of early envoys’ attempts to convert the ‘native,’ population. Early failure in conversion led to later success in reinventing themselves as agents of secular and liberal education, welfare, and popular culture. Through making special efforts not to debase local culture, the missionaries’ work resulted in large sections of society becoming protestantized without being evangelized. An invaluable resource for postgraduates and those undertaking postdoctoral research, this book explores a seminal but overlooked interlude in the encounters between American Protestantism and the Levant. Using data from previously unexplored personal narrative accounts, Khalaf dates the emergence of the puritanical imagination, sparked by sentiments of American exceptionalism, voluntarism and \"soft power\" to at least a century before commonly assumed. \"As one of few books on American missionaries in Syria, Khalaf’s work is a necessary read for anyone interested in Middle East mission history.\" Deanna Ferree Womack, Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, USA Samir Khalaf is Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He has held academic appointments at Princeton, Harvard, MIT and New York University. Among his books are Lebanon Adrift, Sexuality in the Arab World (with John Gagnon), The Heart of Beirut, Civil and Uncivil Violence in Lebanon , Cultural Resistance , and Lebanon’s Predicament . He has been a recipient of several international fellowships and research awards, a trustee of numerous foundations and serves on the editorial boards of a score of international journals and publications. Testing Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (1912) Capacity of Colonizing Pumpkin Plants as an Endophyte, Using a Variety of Inoculation Methods
Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (1912) (EE Genbank No. MH374537) isolated from cucumber leaves as natural endophyte and B. bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (1912) (ES, Genbank No. MH374538), isolated from soil samples, were transplanted to pumpkin plants via foliar spray, soil drench, and seed treatments, among other ways. The results demonstrated that all three inoculation procedures were efficient in introducing B. bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (1912) isolates as endophytes into the pumpkin plant, but to varying degrees. B. bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. (1912) was recovered from leaves and stems using foliar spray methods and from leaves, stems, and roots by seed treatment inoculation method, and only the stem was separated in drench inoculation method.

Study of Polymorphism in the BDNF Gene and its Relationship to Growth Hormone Levels in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Anbar Governorate
Autism spectrum disorder is a condition associated with brain development that affects how a person recognizes and treats others on a social level, causing problems with interaction and social communication. The disorder also involves limited, repetitive patterns of behavior. The term \"spectrum\" in the phrase autism spectrum disorder refers to a wide range of symptoms and levels of severity. The current study was conducted for the purpose of studying the relationship of growth hormone and some physiological factors to polymorphism in the Brain Derived Nuetrophic Factor (BDNF) gene in a sample of 40 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as a control sample of 20 children without autism spectrum disorder for the period from 1/10/2021 to 1/12/2021. The current study showed a significant decrease in p≤0.05 in the concentration of growth hormone in the serum of the study sample members (0.345 (±0.32)) ng/ml compared to its concentration in the serum of the control sample individuals (6.698( ± 5.05)) ng/ml and the current study showed a significant decrease in p≤0.05 in the body mass criterion as it was found that the value of the body mass criterion in the subjects of the study sample is (20.11 (±4.53)) compared to its value in the control sample individuals (25.74 (±7.60)) , It was also found that there was an inverse significant correlation p≤0.05 between BMI and the level of growth hormone in the serum, where the value of the correlation coefficient between the BMI in the study sample members and the level of growth hormone in the blood serum (- 0.35989). The current study indicated a significant increase in p≤0.05 in the level of mercury element in the blood of the study sample members, where its concentration was (1.13 (±0.69)) mg/kg compared to its concentration in the serum of the control sample members, where its average concentration was (0.42 (±0.22)) mg/kg and also showed a significant correlation p≤0.05. Inverse between the concentration of growth hormone and the level of mercury in the serum of the study sample subjects where the value of the correlation coefficient (-0.18006). The results of the current study also showed a significant increase in p≤0.05 in the level of lead element in the blood of the study sample members, where its value was (11.41 (± 4.973)) mg/kg compared to its value in the blood of the control sample members (5.227(± 2.808)) mg/kg. The results of the current study also showed a positive positive p≤0.05 significant correlation between the concentration of growth hormone and the level of lead element in the blood of the study samples, where the value of the correlation coefficient (0.267159)
