Feasibility study on fabrication of Ka-band waveguides via 3D printing and post-metal coating

This study reports the fabrication result of a Ka-band waveguide for a low Earth orbit satellites using 3D printing and subsequent polymer metal coating. Electroless plating followed by electroplating proved effective in improving mechanical and adhesive characteristics. Both careful modification of the waveguide model and adjustment of the thickness of the Cu electroplating layer mitigated bowing issues during post-curing. The final Ka-band evaluation (26.5–30 GHz) showed an average S21 value of approximately 5.25 dB. Despite losses at the flange input and outlet, these results indicate the feasibility of the applied fabrication method for the use of Ka-band waveguides. Unlike existing studies focusing on Ku-band, this research emphasizes the challenging waveguide model for Ka-band, offering insights into SLA printing, post-curing methods, and metal coating on photopolymer surfaces.

Microbiome in Bladder Cancer: A Systematic Review

Although many studies on bladder cancer and the microbiome have been conducted so far, useful strains at the species level have not yet been identified. In addition, in the case of urine studies, methodological heterogeneity is too great, and in tissue studies, the species level through shotgun analysis has not been revealed, and studies using stool samples have provided only limited information. In this review, we will review all the microbiome studies related to bladder cancer so far through a systematic review.

Background
Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon form of infection with
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
in Korea. In this study, we aimed to highlight the clinical features, diagnostic methods, and outcomes of abdominal TB over 12 years in Southeastern Korea.
Methods
A total of 139 patients diagnosed as having abdominal TB who received anti-TB medication from January 2005 to June 2016 were reviewed. Among them, 69 patients (49.6%) had luminal TB, 28 (20.1%) had peritoneal TB, 7 (5.0%) had nodal TB, 23 (16.5%) had visceral TB, and 12 (8.6%) had mixed TB.
Results
The most frequent symptoms were abdominal pain (34.5%) and abdominal distension (21.0%). Diagnosis of abdominal TB was confirmed using microbiologic and/or histologic methods in 76 patients (confirmed diagnosis), while the remaining 63 patients were diagnosed based on clinical presentation and radiologic imaging (clinical diagnosis). According to diagnostic method, frequency of clinical diagnosis was highest in patients with luminal (50.7%) or peritoneal (64.3%) TB, while frequency of microscopic diagnosis was highest in patients with visceral TB (68.2%), and frequency of histologic diagnosis was highest in patients with nodal TB (85.2%). Interestingly, most patients, except those with nodal TB, showed a good response to anti-TB agents, with 84.2% showing a complete response. The mortality rate was only 1.4% in the present study.
Conclusions
Most patients responded very well to anti-TB therapy, and surgery was required in only a minority of cases of suspected abdominal TB.

Application of Liposome Encapsulating Lactobacillus curvatus Extract in Cosmetic Emulsion Lotion

Probiotic extracts have various positive attributes, such as antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibitory, and antimicrobial activity. Lactobacillus curvatus produces bacteriocin, which activates the lipid membrane structure and has potential as a natural preservative for cosmetic emulsions. In this study, L. curvatus extract was encapsulated in liposomes and formulated as an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Radical scavenging activity, tyrosinase inhibition, and challenge tests were conducted to confirm the liposome activity and the activity of the applied lotion emulsion. The liposome-encapsulated extract had a relatively high absolute ζ-potential (52.53 > 35.43), indicating its stability, and 96% permeability, which indicates its potential as an active agent in lotion emulsions. Characterization of emulsions containing the liposomes also indicated a stable state. The liposome-encapsulated extract exhibited a higher radical scavenging activity than samples without the extract and non-encapsulated samples, and the functionality was preserved in the lotion emulsion. The tyrosinase inhibition activity of the lotion emulsion with the liposome-encapsulated extract was similar to that of the non-treated extract. Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were also inhibited in the challenge test with the lotion emulsions during storage. Collectively, these findings indicate that the liposome-encapsulated extract and the lotion containing the encapsulated extract have potential applicability as natural preservatives.

Regarding the oil type, the emulsion with MCT oil showed a small droplet size and a high viscosity and EE, presenting a stable droplet distribution in optical observation. The stability of emulsion containing NaCl was maintained during the in vitro digestion experiments. MCT oil, NaCl and MgCl

have the potential to produce stable double emulsions for storage stability and in vitro digestion studies. The findings would be useful for preparing stable double emulsions used in the food and cosmetic industries.

Ultra-low temperature co-fired CaV2O6-glass composite ceramic substrate for microelectronics

Bivalent calcium metavanadate (CaV2O6) ceramic-glass composite substrates were fabricated using non-aqueous environmental friendly tape casting formulation. 3 wt% of commercial glass was added to the calcined powder of CaV2O6 to achieve a sintering temperature of 650 °C which enables ultra-low temperature co-firing with aluminum electrode. An environmentally benign binder/solvent (Polypropylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate) system was adopted to prepare the well dispersed slurry for tape casting. The crystal structure and co-fireability of the sintered substrate with Al was verified by X-ray diffraction technique. Thermal, dielectric and morphological analysis of the multilayer were analyzed. The room temperature thermal conductivity of CaV2O6-glass composite sintered at 650 °C is about 2.8 W/m K. Sintered ceramics shows a relatively high linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 11.46 ppm/°C, which is favorable for co-firing with high CTE metallic materials. Microwave dielectric properties of CaV2O6-glass composite multilayer fired at 650 °C are εr = 10.6 and tanδ = 3.19 × 10−4 at 15 GHz.

Hepatitis C virus genotype affects survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Background
There is currently no evidence that hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype affects survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to investigate whether the HCV genotype affected the survival rate of patients with HCV-related HCC.
Methods
We performed a retrospective cohort study using the data of patients with HCV-related HCC evaluated at two centers in Korea between January 2005 and December 2016. Propensity score matching between genotype 2 patients and non-genotype 2 patients was performed to reduce bias.
Results
A total of 180 patients were enrolled. Of these, 86, 78, and 16 had genotype 1, genotype 2, and genotype 3 HCV-related HCC, respectively. The median age was 66.0 years, and the median overall survival was 28.6 months. In the entire cohort, patients with genotype 2 had a longer median overall survival (31.7 months) than patients with genotype 1 (28.7 months;
P
= 0.004) or genotype 3 (15.0 months;
P
= 0.003). In the propensity score–matched cohort, genotype 2 patients also showed a better survival rate than non-genotype 2 patients (
P
= 0.007). Genotype 2 patients also had a longer median decompensation-free survival than non-genotype 2 patients (
P
= 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in recurrence-free survival between genotype 2 and non-genotype 2 patients who underwent curative treatment (
P
= 0.077). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, non-genotype 2 (hazard ratio, 2.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.29–3.71) remained an independent risk factor for death.
Conclusion
Among patients with HCV-related HCC, those with genotype 2 have better survival.

Impact of acute kidney injury on survival in patients with chronic hepatitis C: a retrospective cohort study

Background
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is expected to occur commonly in patients with chronic hepatitis C. In addition, AKI may affect the survival of patients with chronic hepatitis C. However, few studies are available on this topic. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of AKI in patients with chronic hepatitis C and investigate the factors related to overall mortality.
Methods
Between January 2005 and December 2018, 1252 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, defined as persistent HCV RNA for at least 6 months, were retrospectively enrolled at two centers. Of them, 1008, 123, and 121 patients had chronic hepatitis (CH), compensated cirrhosis (Com-LC), and decompensated cirrhosis (Decom-LC) or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at entry, respectively. Factors associated with AKI and overall mortality were evaluated using the Cox proportional regression model. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves for the development of AKI and overall mortality were generated.
Results
Over a mean follow-up period of 5.2 years, 285 patients developed AKI, with an incidence rate of 4.35 per 100 person-years. The incidence of AKI increased gradually with progression of chronic hepatitis C: CH (3.32 per 100 person-years), Com-LC (5.86 per 100 person-years), and Decom-LC or HCC (17.28 per 100 person-years). The patients without AKI showed better survival rates at 14 years than the patients with AKI (94.2% vs. 26.3%,
P
< 0.001). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, AKI (hazard ratio, 6.66; 95% confidence interval, 4.26–10.41) remained an independent risk factor for overall mortality.
Conclusion
AKI is common in patients with chronic HCV infection and is associated with significant overall mortality. Therefore, clinicians should carefully monitor the occurrence of AKI, which is an important predictor of mortality in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Sorghum Promotes Cell Proliferation Through Activation of the Growth Hormone/IGF-1–JAK2/STAT5b Signaling Axis In Vitro

Sorghum is known for its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but its effect on cell growth is not well understood. First, the cytotoxicity of various sorghum extract (SE) concentrations was evaluated in C2C12 (murine myoblasts) and C3H10T1/2 (murine embryonic fibroblasts). The extent of DNA damage was then assessed, and the activation of the JAK2/STAT5b and IGF-1 pathways was observed. Studies on the transcriptional regulatory function of STAT5b revealed that SE increased STAT5b/DNA binding and transcriptional promoter activity. Consequently, STAT5b upregulation led to the increased expression of IGF-1. Moreover, other factors, such as growth hormone receptor and bone morphogenetic protein 7, were also upregulated. The results of these experiments suggest that sorghum may enhance muscle recovery or promote growth factors by stimulating the JAK2/STAT5b and IGF-1 pathways. Therefore, sorghum is expected to be an effective functional food for bone growth and muscle recovery, without inducing adverse side effects.

Evaluation of Clinical Outcomes of Prostatic Urethral Lift for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: An Asian Population Study

This study aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of prostatic urethral lift in Korean patients with bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Thirty-two men with symptomatic BPH were consecutively treated in a tertiary care center in Korea. To be included in the present analysis, patients had to meet the following criteria: age ≥50 years, International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS) >12, and prostate volume between 30 mL and 80 mL. Patients were evaluated up to a median follow-up period of 1 year post-procedure. The primary outcomes included symptom relief, improvement of quality of life (QOL), and preservation of sexual function.
All procedures were finished with a mean of 2.2 implants without any serious complication. The numbers of patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease were 16 (50.0%), 24 (75.0%), and 9 (28.1%), respectively. Patients experienced symptom relief by 1 week that was sustained for 12 months. The mean IPSS, QOL, and maximum flow rate improved to 43%, 70%, and 25% by 1 week, and to 41%, 60%, and 32% by 12 months (p<0.001), respectively. There were no occurrences of early urge incontinence, retrograde ejaculation, or erectile dysfunction. Patient-reported adverse events were mild and transient.
Prostatic urethral lift is a safe and effective treatment for BPH in the Asian population. This treatment is minimally invasive, can be performed under local anesthesia, and may be an appropriate method for fragile patients.
