2014
Filled with a profusion of crumbling prewar tenements, the former Nazi ghetto area is synonymous with the Shoah in Poland. The Banana Man
2013
Samuel Zemurray passed away in New Orleans on Nov. 30, 1961, at the age of 84. His obituary, distributed by the Associated Press, read: \"Samuel Zemurray, former president of the United Fruit Company, who came to the United States as a penniless Russian immigrant and accumulated a $30-million fortune selling bananas, died here last night of Parkinson's disease.\" When the president of the United Fruit Company - which had a monopoly on the banana trade - visited Mobile in 1903, he met Zemurray. He agreed to sell him all its \"ripes,\" but Zemurray, a brash upstart, was not entirely satisfied with this lucrative arrangement. He wanted to be an importer and join the exclusive club of traders in \"yellows\" and \"greens,\" or superior quality bananas. He and a partner, having purchased a steamship company, acquired the Cuyamel Fruit Company in Honduras. In 1915, he lay claim to a vast swath of territory in Honduras and Guatemala that the United Fruit Company also coveted. Their differences were resolved when, in the biggest corporate merger until then, Zemurray's Cuyamel Fruit Company merged with the United Fruit Company. As part of the agreement, he became the majority proprietor of United Fruit stock and promised to retire from the banana business.
