Improving Social Support to Increase QoL in Lung Cancer Patients
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organization, over 2 million new lung cancer cases were reported worldwide in 2018, and there were 1.76 million deaths from the disease. Due to its non-specific symptoms, the disease is usually detected at an advanced stage, which gives few treatment options and a short survival rate after diagnosis. That is why improving QoL in the last months of a patient's life is enormously important. The purpose of this study was to analyse original papers in order to determine whether an increase in social support is important in improving QoL for lung cancer patients. Both the direct influence of social support on QoL and indirect influences such as stigma or depression, etc. were taken into consideration. We conducted a review of 22 papers published in English in the period 2005-2020, which were selected using the following keywords: lung cancer, social support, quality of life. Evidence was found for the connections between the improvement of social support and an increase in the QoL of lung cancer patients. It is crucial, and worth whatever effort is required, to increase social support for lung cancer patients, as it is one of the most important factors in improving QoL. According to the studies, a good QoL and minimalised symptoms of the disease are much more important for lung cancer patients than the length of their life.
Robot-Assisted Colorectal Cancer Surgery Mitigates Early Postoperative Immunosuppression and Angiogenesis
Minimally invasive surgery is known to lessen postoperative stress and complications compared with open procedures, yet its molecular effects on immunity and cancer-related mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined immune and inflammatory responses after robot-assisted (RS) versus open (OS) colorectal cancer surgery. Sixty-one patients (RS = 30; OS = 31) were enrolled. Blood samples were collected before surgery and at 8, 24, and 72 h post-incision. Cytokines, growth factors, and prostanoids were measured using multiplex immunoassays and mass spectrometry to assess systemic immune and inflammatory changes. Surgery type markedly influenced perioperative immune profiles. RS induced stronger activation of Th1-associated cytokines, including IFNγ and IP-10, suggesting enhanced cellular immune responsiveness. In contrast, Th2 cytokines and other immunosuppressive mediators—such as IL-4, IL-10, and G-CSF—showed smaller or transient increases after RS, whereas OS triggered broader and more sustained elevations. Angiogenic factors (VEGF-A, PDGF-BB, FGF2) rose significantly after OS but remained comparatively lower and returned to baseline faster after RS, indicating a weaker proangiogenic response. Similarly, postoperative surges in prostaglandins linked to inflammation and tumor progression (PGE2, PGF2α) were blunted and resolved earlier following RS. Overall, the robotic approach was associated with reduced inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity, faster recovery of immune balance, and diminished biochemical signals favoring angiogenesis and potential tumor regrowth, suggesting a potential protective effect against pathogens and cancer-promoting mechanisms after colorectal tumor resection.
The Current Approach to the Diagnosis and Classification of Mirizzi Syndrome
Mirizzi syndrome occurs in up to 6% of patients with cholecystolithiasis. It is generally caused by external compression of the common hepatic duct by a gallstone impacted in the neck of the gallbladder or the cystic duct, which can lead to fistulisation. The aim of this review was to highlight the proposed classifications for Mirizzi syndrome (MS) and to provide an update on modern approaches to the diagnosis of this disease. We conducted research on various internet databases and the total number of records was 993, but after a gradual process of elimination our final review consisted of 21 articles. According to the literature, the Cesendes classification is the most commonly used, but many new suggestions have appeared. Our review shows that the ultrasonography (US) is the most frequently used method of initial diagnosis, despite still having only average sensitivity. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are good methods and are similarly effective, but only the latter can be simultaneously therapeutic. Some modern methods show very high sensitivity, but are not so commonly administered. Mirizzi syndrome is still a diagnostic challenge, despite the advancement of the available tools. Preoperative diagnosis is crucial to avoid complications during treatment. New research may bring a unification of classifications and diagnostic algorithms.

The Utility of Lipidomic Analysis in Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis and Prognosis—A Systematic Review of Recent Literature
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most prevalent and lethal malignancies. Lipidomic investigations have revealed numerous disruptions in lipid profiles across various cancers. Studies on CRC exhibit potential for identifying novel diagnostic or prognostic indicators through lipidomic signatures. This review examines recent literature regarding lipidomic markers for CRC. PubMed database was searched for eligible articles concerning lipidomic biomarkers of CRC. After selection, 36 articles were included in the review. Several studies endeavor to establish sets of lipid biomarkers that demonstrate promising potential to diagnose CRC based on blood samples. Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, ceramides, and triacylglycerols (TAGs) appear to offer the highest diagnostic accuracy. In tissues, lysophospholipids, ceramides, and TAGs were among the most altered lipids, while unsaturated fatty acids also emerged as potential biomarkers. In-depth analysis requires both cell culture and animal studies. CRC involves multiple lipid metabolism alterations. Although numerous lipid species have been suggested as potential diagnostic markers, the establishment of standardized methods and the conduct of large-scale studies are necessary to facilitate their clinical application.
Treatment Adherence in Patients with Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases
COPD is the third most common cause of death globally. Adherence rates in patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases usually range between 10% and 40%. The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of treatment adherence to inhaled therapy in patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases. A total of 325 patients, of mean age 63.04 ± 11.29, with COPD or asthma, were included into the study between 2020 and 2021. The following questionnaires were used: Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, Test of Adherence to Inhalers and Adherence to Refills and Medications Scale. The respondents tended to be convinced of the necessity of their medication (3.87 points per question). The patients reported moderate levels of overall adherence (21.15 ± 6.23). A total of 74% of patients demonstrated sporadic non-compliance. We conclude that patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases are moderately adherent to their medication. Beliefs about medicines have a significant impact on adherence to medications. Being unemployed, being a non-smoker and belief in the necessity of medication are independent determinants of better medication adherence. The number of hospital admissions due to exacerbations of the disease over the last year and belief that medicines are harmful are independent determinants of poorer medication adherence.
Clinical Significance of Nectins in HCC and Other Solid Malignant Tumors: Implications for Prognosis and New Treatment Opportunities—A Systematic Review
The nectin family comprises four proteins, nectin-1 to -4, which act as cell adhesion molecules. Nectins have various regulatory functions in the immune system and can be upregulated or decreased in different tumors. The literature research was conducted manually by the authors using the PubMed database by searching articles published before 2023 with the combination of several nectin-related keywords. A total of 43 studies were included in the main section of the review. Nectins-1–3 have different expressions in tumors. Both the loss of expression and overexpression could be negative prognostic factors. Nectin-4 is the best characterized and the most consistently overexpressed in various tumors, which generally correlates with a worse prognosis. New treatments based on targeting nectin-4 are currently being developed. Enfortumab vedotin is a potent antibody–drug conjugate approved for use in therapy against urothelial carcinoma. Few reports focus on hepatocellular carcinoma, which leaves room for further studies comparing the utility of nectins with commonly used markers.
Fatigue, Depression, and Anxiety in Patients with COPD, Asthma and Asthma-COPD Overlap
Introduction. Asthma and COPD are extremely common respiratory diseases that have a serious impact on people’s lives around the world. A disease characterized by symptoms characteristic for asthma and COPD is called asthma-COPD overlap (ACO). Fatigue and certain psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression are important comorbidities in these diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of fatigue, anxiety, and depression in patients with asthma, COPD, and ACO and to also consider their mutual correlations. Material and Methods. A total of 325 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 159 women and 166 men and their mean age was 63. Two standardized questionnaires were used: the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results. The mean total MFIS score for all patients was 33.03. Patients with asthma generally scored lower than patients with COPD and ACO. There were no statistical differences in the HADS for anxiety between the groups, although around half of the patients registered a score indicating some level of disorder. Patients with COPD and ACO were proven to suffer more from depression than patients with asthma. The HADS and MFIS scores were found to correlate significantly and positively. Conclusions. Our study showed that patients with COPD, asthma, and ACO generally suffered from an increased level of fatigue and depression. Anxiety was high in all groups, but it was at a similar level for patients suffering from each of the three diseases under consideration. It is important to treat the physical symptoms as well as the psychological disorders since they greatly impact on the patient outcomes.
Branching patterns of the foetal popliteal artery
Background: The objective of the study is to evaluate the popliteal artery topography and the origin variability of its branches in human foetuses at the gestational age of from 4 to 9 months. The basis for the analysis are direct observations of classic anatomic dissections of the popliteal fossa. Possible dimorphic and bilateral differen- ces, as well as the gestational age variability at the foetal period, were considered. A typology of popliteal artery branches will be made on the basis of the studies. Materials and methods: The research material of this study comprises 231 foetuses (including 116 males and 115 females). The foetuses were divided into five 28-day age classes. The vessels of the lower extremity were injected with LBSK 5545 latex through the femoral artery. The bilateral dissection of the po- pliteal artery along with its branches was performed. No visible malformations were found in the research material, and the foetuses came from spontaneous abortions and premature births. Results and Conclusions: Ten per cent of the cases featured the variations of popliteal artery terminal branches. Three most commonly seen variations are the trifurcation, anterior tibial-peroneal trunk, and high terminal division of the po- pliteal artery. The most common course of the superior muscular branches is that there are two large branches which are distributed from the popliteal artery at the height of the knee joint cavity and they do not distribute cutaneous branches. Sural branches are also present as two large vessels without cutaneous branches. The genicular anastomosis branches that run on their own are a typical topographic system of these branches.
