The study was conducted to evaluate the cardio-protective activity of combination (COMB) of syringic acid (SA) and resveratrol (RV) against isoproterenol (ISO) induced cardio-toxicity in rats. Rats were pre-treated orally with SA (50 mg/kg), RV (50 mg/kg) and combination of SA (25 mg/kg) and RV (25 mg/kg) along with positive control gallic acid (50 mg/kg) for 30 days. The effects of ISO on cardiac markers, lipid profile and lipid peroxidation marker, anti-oxidant enzymes and m-RNA expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were observed along with histopathological observations of simple and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Serum creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase were significantly increased while cardiac tissue CK-MB, LDH, superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly decreased in ISO administered rats, which also exhibited a significant increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and thiobarbutyric acid reactive substances and significant decrease in high density lipoprotein cholesterol in serum and heart. The m-RNA levels of inflammatory markers NF-kB and TNF-α were significantly increased in ISO treated rats. COMB Pre-treatment significantly reversed the ISO actions. Histopathological studies of simple and TEM were also co-related with the above biochemical parameters. Docking studies with NF-kB were also performed. Evidence has shown for the first time in this approach that COMB pre-treatment ameliorated ISO induced cardio-toxicity in rats and revealed cardio-protection.

Plant extracts have been used since ages for the treatment of various ailments in India and their market is growing globally as well. Achyranthes aspera is one such promising plant with known medicinal properties. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening is necessary to evaluate the therapeutic and antioxidant properties of the medicinal plants. In the present study, we evaluated the bioactive chemical constituents and their in vitro antioxidant potential of A. aspera leaf extract in different solvents. The soxhlets of A. aspera leaf powder in different solvents – methanol, ethanol, aqueous and chloroform on phytochemical screening showed positive results for carbohydrates, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides and steroids. Alkaloids and terpenoids are present in all the extracts except in chloroform extract. Total contents phenols (22.282 gm/100 gm) were found higher as compared to total contents of flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids. Moreover, all antioxidant assays confirmed the antioxidant potential of leaves of A. aspera. Thus, A. aspera is rich in phytochemicals that are needed for its antioxidant potential against various disorders.

The trace elements and minerals in Terminalia pallida fruit ethanolic extract (TpFE) were determined by the instrument inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the cardioprotection of TpFE against isoproterenol (ISO)-administered rats was studied. Rats were pretreated with TpFE (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg bw) for 30 days, with concurrent administration of ISO (85 mg/kg bw) for two consecutive days. The levels of trace elements and minerals in TpFE were below the permitted limits of World Health Organization standards. ISO administration significantly increased the heart weight and cardiac marker enzymes in serum, xanthine oxidase, sodium, and calcium in the heart, whereas significantly decreased body weight, reduced glutathione, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and potassium in the heart. Oral pretreatment of TpFE significantly prevented the ISO-induced alterations. This is the first report that revealed the determination of trace elements and mineral nutrients of TpFE by ICP-MS which plays a principal role in the herbal drug discovery for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Nutmeg a well-known spice used as a folk medicine in India to treat stomach ailments. Worldwide it is commonly used for food preservation and fragrance. Abundant references were given for nutmeg in ayurveda, unani, and siddha as a single drug or as an important constituent in formulations.
In the present study, nutmeg aqueous extract (NMAET) was evaluated against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced hepatotoxicity and oxidative stress.
Antioxidant enzymes, liver functions tests, and lipid profile tests were performed using standard procedures. Histological examination of liver was done by fixing in formaldehyde solution and hematoxylin staining.
Oral administration of NMAET effectively inhibited the ISO-induced changes in the activities of hepatic marker and antioxidant enzymes in plasma and heart tissue along with lipid peroxidation levels. The liver sections of ISO administered rats showed massive fatty changes, necrosis, ballooning degeneration, and broad infiltration of the lymphocytes and the loss of cellular boundaries; these changes were completely absent in groups treated with extract. Analysis of variance and Duncan's Multiple Range tests were used to perform statistical analysis.
Results suggest that the NMAET possess significant potential as hepatoprotective and antioxidative agent against ISO-induced damage in rats.
