Mental health impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on mothers

The perinatal period is a time of increased vulnerability for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). Emotional trauma is a risk factor for PMAD development and is common among survivors of extreme weather events (EWEs), which are becoming more frequent and intense as the climate crisis progresses. EWE-related stress and anxiety have not been extensively studied in the perinatal population. However, the limited available data suggest a negative impact of EWE exposure on perinatal mental health, warranting further investigation and investment.
To address this knowledge gap, we interviewed new Australian mothers to understand how EWEs affect the mental health of the perinatal population.
Australian mothers (18 years of age or older) with a baby under 12 months of age were recruited to participate in a single virtual focus group session (seven group sessions were run in total) and complete an anonymous survey. Participants were asked questions regarding their concerns about extreme weather and its impact, as well as their general maternal functioning. Maternal functioning, depression, and climate distress were measured via the survey.
The study sample comprised 31 Australian mothers (
= 31.74,
= 4.86), predominantly located in Queensland. Findings from the focus groups suggested six key themes; however, of focus to this study are three themes related to maternal mental health: health and well-being, helplessness and avoidant coping, and resilience and adaptation. Predominant subthemes focused on trauma resulting from EWE exposure, economic and heat concerns, social isolation, hopelessness about the future, and feelings of resilience.
The evidence linking adverse perinatal mental health outcomes with climate change and EWEs highlights the urgent need for interventions in this context to protect perinatal mental health and well-being. By acknowledging the traumatic impact of these experiences on mothers, this study supports advocacy for policies that specifically address this issue.

Exploring a Potential Interaction Between the Effect of Specific Maternal Smoking Patterns and Comorbid Antenatal Depression in Causing Postpartum Depression

To explore a potential interaction between the effect of specific maternal smoking patterns and the presence of antenatal depression, as independent exposures, in causing postpartum depression (PPD).
This case-control study of participants with singleton term births (N = 51220) was based on data from the 2017-2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Multivariable log-binomial regression models examined the main effects of smoking patterns and self-reported symptoms of antenatal depression on the risk of PPD on the adjusted risk ratio (aRR) scale and tested a two-way interaction adjusting for covariates selected in a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The interaction effects were measured on the additive scale using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), the attributable proportion of interaction (AP), and the synergy index (SI). Causal effects were defined in a counterfactual framework. The E-value quantified the potential impact of unobserved/unknown covariates, conditional on observed covariates.
Among 6841 women in the sample who self-reported PPD, 35.7% also reported symptoms of antenatal depression. Out of 3921 (7.7%) women who reported smoking during pregnancy, 32.6% smoked at high intensity (≥10 cigarettes/day) in all three trimesters and 36.6% had symptoms of antenatal depression. The main effect of PPD was the strongest for women who smoked at high intensity throughout pregnancy (aRR 1.65; 95% CI: 1.63, 1.68). Strong associations and interaction effects between maternal smoking patterns and co-occurring antenatal depression support smoking prevention and cessation interventions during pregnancy to lower the likelihood of PPD.

Effects of Seating Arrangement on Small-Group Behavior

The effects of seating distance and orientation on small-group behavior were investigated in male and female four-person groups. The nonfacing orientation (L-shape) produced more frequent self-manipulative behaviors and postural adjustments and longer pauses than the facing orientation (circle-shape). No overall effects were found for distance or sex composition of the groups on either the behaviors in the group discussion or on rated satisfaction with the group interaction. A correlational analysis of the behavioral measures and ratings indicated that increased pause lengths in the discussion were predictive of more negative ratings of the group interaction. The processes underlying the orientation effects and the potential generalizability of these effects are also discussed.

Prevalence and patterns of cigarette smoking before and during early and late pregnancy according to maternal characteristics: the first national data based on the 2003 birth certificate revision, United States, 2016

Background
The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of smoking by intensity status before pregnancy and during early (first and second trimester) and late (third trimester) pregnancy according to race/ethnicity, age, and educational attainment of women who gave birth in the United States in 2016.
Methods
This cross-sectional study was based on the 2016 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Natality File of 3,956,112 live births, the first year that it became 100% nationally representative. Self-reported smoking data were used to create new seven smoking intensity status categories to capture natural variability in smoking patterns during pregnancy and to identify maternal smokers by race/ethnicity, age, and educational attainment. The risk of smoking at low and high intensity in early pregnancy was estimated in multivariable logistic regression analyses.
Results
Nearly 9.4% of women reported smoking before pregnancy and 7.1% during pregnancy, both at high and low intensity, and smoking rates were higher in the first trimester (7.1%) than in the second (6.1%) or the third (5.7%) trimester. Non-Hispanic White women, women 20–24 years old, and women with less than a high school education were the strongest predictors of smoking anytime during pregnancy. The odds of smoking in early pregnancy at high intensity were 88% lower (aOR 0.12, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.13) for Hispanic women, compared to non-Hispanic White women; 16% higher (aOR 1.16, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.21) for women 20–24 years old and 16% lower (aOR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.80, 0.89) for women ≥35 years old, compared to women 25–29 years old; as well as 13% higher (aOR 1.13, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.18) for women with less than a high school education and 92% lower (aOR 0.08, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.09) for women with a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to women with a high school diploma.
Conclusions
Despite the high prevalence of high intensity smoking before and during pregnancy, future intervention strategies need to focus on the proportion of low intensity quitters and reducers, who are ready to stop smoking. Continual monitoring of trends in smoking intensity patterns is necessary, including neonatal outcomes over time.

Analysis of Factors of Variation in Characteristics of Boar Ejaculates

This study aims to analyse the effect of selected variation factors on the ejaculate characteristics of boars and to characterise changes in ejaculate characteristics in Landrace, Large White, Duroc, and Pietrain boars during their use for artificial insemination. The original value of this work lies in the estimation of the percentage share of individual components of variability in shaping the traits of boar ejaculate. A total of 943 ejaculates collected from 77 boars used for artificial insemination were analysed. This study began when the boars were at 8–9 months old. Ejaculates were collected in nine consecutive months from the start of the boars’ use. Immediately after collection, they were analysed for ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, percentage of sperm with progressive motility, total number of spermatozoa, and number of insemination doses per ejaculate. The results were analysed according to three criteria: breed of boar (Landrace, Large White, Duroc, and Pietrain), age of boar (up to 10 months, 11–13 months, 14–17 months, and more than 17 months), and season (spring, summer, autumn, and winter). The analysis of the variation in ejaculate characteristics took into account the share of each factor (boar breed, boar age, and season) in the variation, as well as the interactions between factors. The effects of the three factors and interactions between them were calculated using an ANOVA (analysis of variance). The variation was shown to depend mainly on the breed and age. These two factors and the interaction between them determine about 80% of the variation in ejaculate characteristics. The season also has an effect, but its share in the influence of variation on ejaculate characteristics is relatively small. Ejaculates from Landrace boars are the most favourable for insemination, with a large volume, a relatively high sperm concentration, and the highest number of sperm. The highest number of insemination doses can be prepared from Landrace ejaculates—on average, 2.7–6.7 more doses than from the other breeds. Duroc boar ejaculates are most distinctive, with a very low volume but a very high sperm concentration and the highest sperm motility. The ejaculates of Pietrain boars showed the opposite pattern, with the largest volume but the lowest sperm concentration. The sexual development of young boars, expressed as an increase in ejaculation performance, progresses during their first year of insemination use.

The ability of spermatozoa to penetrate the egg and their competitiveness in the female reproductive organs may depend on their dimensions and shape, and these are often related to the characteristics of the ejaculate. This study aimed to assess the degree of dependence of the morphological features of spermatozoa on sperm concentration in the ejaculate of the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus). The research material consisted of ejaculates collected once by manual stimulation from 20 1-year-old foxes. All ejaculates were analysed for standard parameters (volume, sperm concentration, total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate). Morphometric measurements of spermatozoa were also performed, on the basis of which spermatozoa shape indexes were calculated. It has been shown that the concentration of sperm in the ejaculate affects the morphological characteristics of male Arctic fox sperm. A high concentration of sperm favours the development of minor morphological changes. As the concentration of sperm in the ejaculate increases, the percentage of spermatozoa with major morphological changes decreases. The most common morphological anomaly of sperm in the ejaculates is the “Dag-like” defect, which is most common in ejaculates with the lowest sperm concentration. It has also been shown that, as sperm concentration increases, the dimensions of spermatozoa heads and tails decrease. Sperm concentration affects the shape of Arctic fox sperm. As sperm concentration in ejaculate increases, the ellipticity and elongation indicators decrease, while the head length / total spermatozoa length indicator gradually increases.

This study investigates the metabolic responses of the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum under different growth conditions, comparing benthic (adherent) and planktonic states. Using a multiblock metabolomics approach combining LC-HRMS2, NMR, and GC-MS techniques, we compared the metabolome of P. tricornutum cultivated on three laboratory substrates (glass, polystyrene, and polydimethylsiloxane) and under planktonic conditions. Our results revealed metabolic differences between adherent and planktonic cultures, particularly concerning the lipid and carbohydrate contents. Adherent cultures showed a metabolic profile with an increase in betaine lipids (DGTA/S), fatty acids (tetradecanoic and octadecenoic acids), and sugars (myo-inositol and ribose), suggesting modifications in membrane composition and lipid remodeling, which play a potential role in adhesion. In contrast, planktonic cultures displayed a higher content of cellobiose, specialized metabolites such as dihydroactinidiolide, quinic acid, catechol, and terpenes like phytol, confirming different membrane composition, energy storage capacity, osmoregulation, and stress adaptation. The adaptative strategies do not only concern adherent and planktonic states, but also different adherent culture conditions, with variations in lipid, amino acid, terpene, and carbohydrate contents depending on the physical properties of the support. Our results highlight the importance of metabolic adaptation in adhesion, which could explain the fouling process.

Low birthweight in term singletons mediates the association between maternal smoking intensity exposure status and immediate neonatal intensive care unit admission: the E-value assessment

Background
Research investigating the wellbeing of term neonates in the United States is scarce. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of low birthweight (LBW) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission among term singletons in association with maternal smoking intensity exposure status, to explore LBW as a mediator linking smoking to immediate newborn NICU transfer/admission, and to assess the potential impact of unmeasured confounding in effect estimates.
Methods
The Natality File of live births registered in the United States in 2016, the first year that all 50 states implemented the revised 2003 standard birth certificate, was restricted to singleton term births (37–41 completed weeks gestation). The prevalence of LBW (< 2500 g) and NICU transfer/admission was estimated across maternal demographic characteristics and smoking intensity status in early and in late pregnancy. Mediation analyses, based on the counterfactual approach, were conducted to examine the total effect (TE), controlled direct effect (CDE), natural direct (NDE) and indirect effects (NIE), and the percentage mediated through LBW. The E-values based on effect size estimates and on lower-bounds of 95% confidence intervals (CIs) assessed the potential impact of unmeasured confounding.
Results
Nearly 6.8% of women smoked in early and in late pregnancy, most (36.4%) smoked at high intensity (≥ 10 cigarettes /day) and had the highest prevalence of LBW (6.7%) and NICU transfer/admission (7.0%). For the largest smoking intensity exposure category, the estimate of the TE was 1.68 (95% CI: 1.63, 1.73), of the NDE was 1.56 (95% CI: 1.51, 1.61), of the NIE was 1.08 (95% CI:1.07, 1.09), and the percentage mediated by LBW was 17.6%. The E-values for association estimates and for the lower-bounds of 95% CIs demonstrated the minimum strength of the potential unmeasured confounding necessary to explain away observed associations.
Conclusions
These findings fill a gap on the prevalence of LBW and NICU transfer/admission in term neonates of mothers who smoke and on the role of LBW linking to NICU placement, which could be used to update practitioners, to implement smoking cessation interventions, monitor trends, and to inform planning and allocation of healthcare resources.

Interface Carbon Content and its Influence on Carburization of Steel in Bimetallic Castings

Modern materials engineering is increasingly moving away from monolithic structures in favor of bimetal components. Layered castings combining steel and cast iron provide an excellent response to the conflicting operational requirements that machine parts must meet. Combining the high ductility and strength of steel with the exceptional abrasion resistance and vibration damping properties of cast iron allows for the creation of components that are both durable and crack-resistant. The key to success in this technology is achieving a permanent diffusion bond at the interface between the two phases, which requires precise control of the thermal and physicochemical parameters of the casting process. This paper presents the impact of the difference in carbon content between the joined layers on diffusion efficiency and, consequently, joint quality.

Modern medicine requires effective, continuous, and safe therapies, which largely depend on the targeted delivery and activity of the drug. This goal can be achieved by designing drug delivery systems with improved pharmacokinetic properties and enhanced drug transport to the affected tissue. Human serum albumin (HSA) is an attractive carrier for the synthesis of therapeutic nanoparticles, several of which have already been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The success of Abraxane as an effective treatment for metastatic breast cancer and non-small cell lung carcinoma, the application of Optison in ultrasound imaging, and the use of Nanocoll as an agent for SPECT diagnostics in sentinel node localisation confirm the strong potential of albumin-based systems. Further benefits are expected in patients with soft tissue cancers, as LadRx is seeking FDA marketing approval for Aldoxorubicin. The future of oncology lies in theranostics, which combines a tumour-localising factor on one platform with a drug targeting cancer cells and a factor that activates the cytotoxicity of the drug after it reaches the target tissue. This article presents recent advancements in albumin-based nanoparticles for drug delivery, targeting, and imaging. It also briefly discusses methods of synthesis and surface modification of albumin nanocarriers to enable targeted delivery to pathological sites. Finally, it outlines the latest approaches in multimodal theranostic platforms, highlighting albumin’s potential to improve cancer therapy.
