Magnetic turbulence in a table-top laser-plasma relevant to astrophysical scenarios
Turbulent magnetic fields abound in nature, pervading astrophysical, solar, terrestrial and laboratory plasmas. Understanding the ubiquity of magnetic turbulence and its role in the universe is an outstanding scientific challenge. Here, we report on the transition of magnetic turbulence from an initially electron-driven regime to one dominated by ion-magnetization in a laboratory plasma produced by an intense, table-top laser. Our observations at the magnetized ion scale of the saturated turbulent spectrum bear a striking resemblance with spacecraft measurements of the solar wind magnetic-field spectrum, including the emergence of a spectral kink. Despite originating from diverse energy injection sources (namely, electrons in the laboratory experiment and ion free-energy sources in the solar wind), the turbulent spectra exhibit remarkable parallels. This demonstrates the independence of turbulent spectral properties from the driving source of the turbulence and highlights the potential of small-scale, table-top laboratory experiments for investigating turbulence in astrophysical environments. Understanding the role of magnetic turbulence in the atmosphere is difficult as direct access is limited, but latest laser technology can enable such studies in the lab. Here the authors probe the evolution of such turbulence in laser-generated plasma with its implications to astrophysical environments.
Application of tobacco control experience to alcohol consumption measures
Low- and middle-income countries face a rapidly escalating, alcohol-related public health crisis spanning cancer, injury, liver disease, mental health disorders and the complications of human immunodeficiency virus infections. Despite compelling evidence that alcohol is a leading risk factor for premature death and disability, few countries include comprehensive alcohol control policies in their public health agenda. This gap between evidence and policy is critical because evidence-based interventions could decrease the alcohol-attributable disease burden by up to 30% within a decade. We conducted a policy analysis to synthesize evidence from low- and middle-income countries and propose a comprehensive multicomponent framework for alcohol control adapted from experience with tobacco control. Documented achievements show that simultaneously integrating alcohol control into the existing health-care system, introducing regulation, and building institutional capacity can reduce consumption and generate substantial economic returns. However, interference from the alcohol industry in policy, mirroring the historical approach of the tobacco industry, underscores the need for explicit protections. Evidence-based recommendations on implementing alcohol control policies are presented for international agencies, national governments, health-care systems and civil society. These recommendations also draw on global lessons from the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Today, the convergence of robust scientific evidence, proven interventions, successful implementation models and growing political support present an opportunity to advance alcohol control in low- and middle-income countries. The question is not whether comprehensive alcohol control is feasible in resource-constrained settings but whether the global health community will act decisively on the evidence available.
Trends in Child Immunization across Geographical Regions in India: Focus on Urban-Rural and Gender Differentials
Although child immunization is regarded as a highly cost-effective lifesaver, about fifty percent of the eligible children aged 12-23 months in India are without essential immunization coverage. Despite several programmatic initiatives, urban-rural and gender difference in child immunization pose an intimidating challenge to India's public health agenda. This study assesses the urban-rural and gender difference in child immunization coverage during 1992-2006 across six major geographical regions in India. Three rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted during 1992-93, 1998-99 and 2005-06 were analyzed. Bivariate analyses, urban-rural and gender inequality ratios, and the multivariate-pooled logistic regression model were applied to examine the trends and patterns of inequalities over time. The analysis of change over one and half decades (1992-2006) shows considerable variations in child immunization coverage across six geographical regions in India. Despite a decline in urban-rural and gender differences over time, children residing in rural areas and girls remained disadvantaged. Moreover, northeast, west and south regions, which had the lowest gender inequality in 1992 observed an increase in gender difference over time. Similarly, urban-rural inequality increased in the west region during 1992-2006. This study suggests periodic evaluation of the health care system is vital to assess the between and within group difference beyond average improvement. It is essential to integrate strong immunization systems with broad health systems and coordinate with other primary health care delivery programs to augment immunization coverage.
Application of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing for abiotic stress management in crop plants
Abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, cold, heat, and heavy metals, extensively reducing global agricultural production. Traditional breeding approaches and transgenic technology have been widely used to mitigate the risks of these environmental stresses. The discovery of engineered nucleases as genetic scissors to carry out precise manipulation in crop stress-responsive genes and associated molecular network has paved the way for sustainable management of abiotic stress conditions. In this context, the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat-Cas (CRISPR/Cas)-based gene-editing tool has revolutionized due to its simplicity, accessibility, adaptability, flexibility, and wide applicability. This system has great potential to build up crop varieties with enhanced tolerance against abiotic stresses. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on understanding the mechanism of abiotic stress response in plants and the application of CRISPR/Cas-mediated gene-editing system towards enhanced tolerance to a multitude of stresses including drought, salinity, cold, heat, and heavy metals. We provide mechanistic insights on the CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing technology. We also discuss applications of evolving genome editing techniques such as prime editing and base editing, mutant library production, transgene free and multiplexing to rapidly deliver modern crop cultivars adapted to abiotic stress conditions.
Acute Necrotizing Encephalitis Due to Influenza B in a Child: A Case Report
Acute necrotizing encephalitis (ANE) is a rare and life-threatening form of encephalitis associated with influenza virus and other pathogens. It is characterized by a rapid onset of neurological symptoms and has been linked to a cytokine storm within the brain. We present a unique case of an eight-year-old female with influenza B-associated ANE, involving multiple brain areas including the cerebellum and brainstem and cauda equina involvement. The patient had a rapid neurological deterioration, and MRI findings revealed extensive multifocal areas of abnormal brain parenchyma and inflammation with Guillain-Barre appearance in the cauda equina. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ANE with cauda equina involvement leading to neurological deficits. Despite treatment with oseltamivir, steroids, and intravenous immunoglobulins, the patient had poor neurological outcomes, similar to those reported in the literature.
Drought and temporary migration in rural India: A comparative study across different socio-economic groups with a cross-sectional nationally representative dataset
Vast stretches of India comes under meteorological drought this year or the other. A huge population base in rural India are rendered highly vulnerable to this drought because of their primary dependency on agriculture and in turn they may respond through temporary migration out of the drought affected rural areas in search of alternative livelihoods. This study aims to investigate the association between drought and temporary migration in rural India by fitting binary logistic regression models on a cross-sectional dataset involving both National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) 64 th round data and India Meteorological Department (IMD) rainfall data. The paper also examines whether this association varies across the different socio-economic groups. Out of the total temporary migrants generated in rural India in the study period, 99.46% migrated internally and 67.12% were rural to urban migrants. The study finds that there is a positive association between drought instances and probability of a household to have at least one temporary migrant member in rural India (OR 1.64 with p<0.001) while controlling all other covariates. The study also concludes that the probability of temporary migration on account of drought is more severe among the socio-economically marginalised sections of the rural population compared to their better-off counterparts.
Determinants of Maternity Care Services Utilization among Married Adolescents in Rural India
Coupled with the largest number of maternal deaths, adolescent pregnancy in India has received paramount importance due to early age at marriage and low contraceptive use. The factors associated with the utilization of maternal healthcare services among married adolescents in rural India are poorly discussed. Using the data from third wave of National Family Health Survey (2005-06), available in public domain for the use by researchers, this paper examines the factors associated with the utilization of maternal healthcare services among married adolescent women (aged 15-19 years) in rural India. Three components of maternal healthcare service utilization were measured: full antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care within 42 days of delivery for the women who gave births in the last five years preceding the survey. Considering the framework on causes of maternal mortality proposed by Thaddeus and Maine (1994), selected socioeconomic, demographic, and cultural factors influencing outcome events were included as the predictor variables. Bi-variate analyses including chi-square test to determine the difference in proportion, and logistic regression to understand the net effect of predictor variables on selected outcomes were applied. Findings indicate the significant differences in the use of selected maternal healthcare utilization by educational attainment, economic status and region of residence. Muslim women, and women belonged to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes are less likely to avail safe delivery services. Additionally, adolescent women from the southern region utilizing the highest maternal healthcare services than the other regions. The present study documents several socioeconomic and cultural factors affecting the utilization of maternal healthcare services among rural adolescent women in India. The ongoing healthcare programs should start targeting household with married adolescent women belonging to poor and specific sub-groups of the population in rural areas to address the unmet need for maternal healthcare service utilization.
Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB)-induced plant adaptations to stresses: an updated review
Plants and bacteria are co-evolving and interact with one another in a continuous process. This interaction enables the plant to assimilate the nutrients and acquire protection with the help of beneficial bacteria known as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). These beneficial bacteria naturally produce bioactive compounds that can assist plants’ stress tolerance. Moreover, they employ various direct and indirect processes to induce plant growth and protect plants against pathogens. The direct mechanisms involve phytohormone production, phosphate solubilization, zinc solubilization, potassium solubilization, ammonia production, and nitrogen fixation while, the production of siderophores, lytic enzymes, hydrogen cyanide, and antibiotics are included under indirect mechanisms. This property can be exploited to prepare bioformulants for biofertilizers, biopesticides, and biofungicides, which are convenient alternatives for chemical-based products to achieve sustainable agricultural practices. However, the application and importance of PGPB in sustainable agriculture are still debatable despite its immense diversity and plant growth-supporting activities. Moreover, the performance of PGPB varies greatly and is dictated by the environmental factors affecting plant growth and development. This review emphasizes the role of PGPB in plant growth-promoting activities (stress tolerance, production of bioactive compounds and phytohormones) and summarises new formulations and opportunities.
Caste and tobacco use: Decomposing inequalities using Global Adult Tobacco Survey, India
India ranks second globally in tobacco consumption, with marked disparities across socially stratified caste groups. Despite tobacco control efforts, Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC)-historically marginalized communities-exhibit elevated tobacco use. This study examines caste-based disparities in smoked and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use and identifies factors contributing to these inequalities. We analyzed nationally representative data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2016-17, comprising 74,037 adults aged ≥15 years. Social groups were classified as ST, SC, Other Backward Classes (OBC), and General categories. We estimated prevalence rates, used multivariable logistic regression to assess associations with socio-demographic factors, and employed multivariate decomposition analysis to quantify contributors to inter-group disparities. Overall tobacco use prevalence was 28.6%, with substantial variation: ST (36.0%), SC (28.9%), OBC (29.1%), and General (23.1%). SLT use was particularly high among ST (27.7%) and SC (20.7%) compared to General (16.0%). Men had 16-fold higher odds of SLT use (AOR: 16.4; 95%CI:15.2-17.7) and 23-fold higher odds of smoking [Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 23.1; 95%CI:20.8-25.6] compared to women, with similar patterns within each social group. Lower education, older age, disrupted marriage, rural residence, and poor wealth status were independently associated with higher tobacco use. Decomposition analyses revealed that sex (38%), education (24%), and region (18%) explained most between-group differences, with substantial tobacco use concentrated in Eastern, Central, and Northeastern states. Pronounced caste-based tobacco use disparities persist in India, disproportionately affecting socioeconomically disadvantaged ST and SC populations, particularly older, less-educated in rural areas. Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.a requires targeted interventions addressing these structural inequalities through culturally appropriate cessation programs, enhanced health education, and region-specific tobacco control policies.
Smokeless tobacco use and public health nutrition: a global systematic review
Tobacco consumption among low- and middle-income countries where food insecurity remains a challenge poses several concerns. This review examines the available global evidence linking smokeless tobacco (SLT) use with public health nutrition and its implications. Systematic review of articles extracted from PubMed and Scopus from January 2000 to December 2020. Included studies that demonstrated the relationship between SLT and nutrition-related factors, that is, BMI, malnutrition, anaemia, poor birth outcomes and metabolic disorders. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines have been followed to conduct the systematic evidence review. A total of thirty-four studies were finally used in the systematic review, which included cross-sectional (thirty-one) and cohort (three). SLT use has a huge impact on body weight, alteration in taste, poor oral health, and consumption of fruits and vegetables leading to malnutrition. Maternal use of SLT not only leads to anaemia but also hampers birth outcomes. Increased risk of metabolic syndrome and gallstone disease among SLT users are also well documented in the studies. The review highlights the linkages between SLT usage and poor nutritional outcomes. Tobacco control efforts should be convergent with public health nutrition to achieve overall health benefits. Attention is also required to explore suitable mechanisms for SLT cessation combined with enhancing food and nutrition security at the community level in sync with investments in public health nutrition intervention.
