This chapter reviews fundamental properties and recent advances of diffuse and pulsating aurora. Diffuse and pulsating aurora often occurs on closed field lines and involves energetic electron precipitation by wave-particle interaction. After summarizing the definition, large-scale morphology, types of pulsation, and driving processes, we review observation techniques, occurrence, duration, altitude, evolution, small-scale structures, fast modulation, relation to high-energy precipitation, the role of ECH waves, reflected and secondary electrons, ionosphere dynamics, and simulation of wave-particle interaction. Finally we discuss open questions of diffuse and pulsating aurora.

This study aims to compare the outputs of the waist-worn Active style Pro HJA-350IT (ASP; used in studies with Asian populations), the waist-worn ActiGragh™GT3X+ using the normal filter (GT3X+) and the thigh-worn activPAL3 (AP) in assessing adults' sedentary behaviour (total sedentary time, number of breaks) under free-living conditions. Fifty healthy workers wore the three monitors simultaneously during their waking hours on two days, including a work day and a non-work day. Valid data were at least 10 hours of wearing time, and the differences between monitors on the sedentary outputs using the AP as criterion measurement were analyzed by ANOVA. The number of participants who had complete valid data for work day and non-work day was 47 and 44, respectively. Total sedentary time and breaks estimated by the AP were respectively 466.5 ± 146.8 min and 64.3 ± 24.9 times on the work day and 497.7 ± 138.3 min and 44.6 ± 15.4 times on the non-work day. In total sedentary time, the ASP estimated 29.7 min (95%CI = 7.9 to 51.5) significantly shorter than the AP on the work day but showed no significant difference against the AP on the non-work day. The GT3X+ estimated 80.1 min (54.6 to 105.6) and 52.3 (26.4 to 78.2) significantly longer than the AP on the work day and the non-work day, respectively. For the number of breaks from sedentary time, on both days, the ASP and the GT3X+ estimated significantly more than the AP: 14.1 to 15.8 times (6.3 to 22.5) for the ASP and 27.7 to 28.8 times (21.8 to 34.8) for the GT3X+. Compared to the AP as the criterion, the ASP can underestimate total sedentary time and the GT3X+ can overestimate it, and more so at the lower levels of sedentary time. For breaks from sedentary time, compared to the AP, both the GT3X+ the ASP can overestimate.

Validity and Reliability of Japanese-Language Self-reported Measures for Assessing Adults Domain-Specific Sedentary Time

Background: Good quality measures of Japanese adults’ sedentary behaviors are needed to accurately assess correlates of specific sedentary behaviors. The present study assessed criterion validity of total sedentary behavior and test-retest reliability of six domain-specific sedentary behaviors. Methods: We administered a questionnaire, based on previous studies, that measured domain-specific sedentary behaviors. To examine validity, agreement between self-reported time spent in sedentary behaviors from the questionnaire and objectively-measured sedentary time using accelerometers was compared among 392 adults (aged 40–64 years) in two Japanese cities. For reliability, a 2-week interval test-retest was administered to a convenience sample of 34 participants. Results: The correlation between total self-reported and objectively measured sedentary time was significant (all P < 0.001) and fair-to-good for workdays (ρ = 0.57) and whole week (ρ = 0.49), but was low for non-workdays (ρ = 0.23). The difference between the two measures was significant for whole week (z = −2.25, P = 0.03) and non-workdays (z = −5.50, P < 0.001), but was not significant for workdays (z = −0.60, P = 0.55). There was a significant positive association between the difference in the two measures and the average of these two measures (workdays: r = 0.53; non-workdays: r = 0.45; and whole week: r = 0.54, all P < 0.001). There was fair-to-good test-retest reliability of total sedentary time for each domain (workdays: interclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.77, non-workdays: ICC = 0.53, and whole week: ICC = 0.7; all P < 0.01). Conclusions: The scale of domain-specific sedentary behaviors is reliable for estimating where and for what purpose Japanese adults spend their sedentary time, and total sedentary time is valid for workdays and the whole week.

Adverse events in exercise interventions among older adults with frailty: a study protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis

IntroductionAlthough several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have demonstrated the benefits of exercise interventions in older adults with frailty, the potential harm associated with these interventions has not been systematically synthesised. This systematic review aims to examine the adverse events reported in exercise intervention trials involving older adults with frailty and to compare the risk of adverse events between the intervention and control groups.Methods and analysisSearches will be performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus) for published trials. Eligible studies will be randomised controlled trials of exercise interventions, including older adults with frailty aged ≥60 years, with frailty identified using a validated method. Five reviewers and three referees, all with expertise in exercise interventions, will be assigned to three independent review teams to ensure efficient screening. Reviewers will independently screen titles, abstracts and full texts using Rayyan, and then extract trial and adverse event data into an Excel spreadsheet. The risk of bias in eligible trials will be assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB-2) tool. The referees will resolve any disagreements between the two reviewers throughout the screening, data extraction and risk-of-bias assessment processes. The primary outcome is adverse events, defined as any unfavourable, unintended signs, symptoms or disease that occurred during the study period. An independent biostatistician will perform a random-effects meta-analysis using a generalised linear mixed model with a binomial likelihood and a logit link to estimate the pooled risk ratios (RRs) for adverse events in the intervention group relative to the control group. Publication bias will be evaluated using funnel plots and Egger’s regression test. Depending on the number of available studies, subgroup analyses will be conducted to examine differences in RRs according to the study quality, duration of intervention, exercise frequency, setting and supervision.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval was not required because we did not use specific patient data. The findings of the systematic review and meta-analysis will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed journal and presentation at appropriate conferences.PROSPERO registration numberCRD420251180645.

Association between anorexia of ageing and sarcopenia among Japanese older adults

Background Malnutrition plays an essential role in the mechanism of pathogenesis for sarcopenia. In late life, both food consumption and energy intakes decline. One of key factors for reduced energy intakes is anorexia of ageing. The aim of this study is to examine the association between anorexia of ageing and sarcopenia among community‐dwelling elderly Japanese individuals. Methods This uses population‐based, cross‐sectional cohort study of elderly Japanese individuals. Anorexia of ageing was assessed via a simplified nutritional appetite questionnaire. Handgrip strength and walking speed were tested, and skeletal muscle mass was assessed using a bio‐impedance analysis device. Subjects with sarcopenia were defined as those who met the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. The association between anorexia of ageing and sarcopenia was then analysed via multiple regression analysis. Results In total, 9,496 elderly Japanese individuals were evaluated (mean age 74.1 ± 5.4 years; male, 47.0%). The prevalence of anorexia of ageing was 9.8% (n = 927) in the present study. The prevalence of sarcopenia in men was 1.1%, 1.8%, 6.1%, 10.1%, and 21.2% and was 1.6%, 3.3%, 3.6%, 4.8%, and 7.4% in women aged 65–69, 70–74, 75–79, 80–84, and 85 years and older, respectively. The prevalence of anorexia also showed an age‐dependent increase in both sexes (P < 0.001, respectively). The prevalence of anorexia in men was 8.3%, 6.3%, 9.8%, 13.6%, and 12.9% and was 7.9%, 9.4%, 10.5%, 17.6%, and 17.1% in women aged 65–69, 70–74, 75–79, 80–84, and 85 years and older, respectively. In multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for the covariates except for albumin, anorexia of ageing was independently associated with sarcopenia (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.07 to 1.95; P = 0.015). This significant association remained even after adjusting for all covariates including nutritional status (OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.06 to 1.92, P = 0.020). Conclusions Anorexia of ageing is associated with sarcopenia among Japanese elderly individuals. Further studies are needed to determine whether a causal association exists between anorexia and sarcopenia.

Estimating the risk reduction in disability incidence by adhering to recommendation-based physical activity in older adults: a cohort study

BackgroundThe WHO recommends ≥150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for older adults, while the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare suggests ≥6000 steps/day. However, the potential of meeting these recommendations to reduce the incidence of disability remains unclear.MethodsThis study included 4079 community-dwelling older people from the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology–Study of Geriatric Syndromes. Physical activity was measured using triaxial accelerometers over 1 month, with 12-month data used in sensitivity analyses. Disability incidence was defined as new certification by the Japanese Long-Term Care Insurance system for 58 months. To compare the cumulative incidence of disability between adherent and non-adherent groups, we applied the parametric g-formula accounting for sociodemographic, physical and medical covariates.ResultsFor MVPA adherence, disability incidence was reduced by −2.17% (95% CI −4.50% to 0.16%). Continuous MVPA adherence over 12 months significantly reduced disability incidence by −3.15% (95% CI −6.08% to −0.22%). A significant reduction in severe disability incidence was observed with MVPA adherence (−1.18%, 95% CI −3.59% to −0.17%). Subgroup analyses indicated greater reductions in disability incidence among individuals aged <75 years (−2.56%, 95% CI −4.81% to −0.31%). For daily step adherence, the largest risk reduction was observed in the subgroup of older adults aged ≥75 years (−4.40%, 95% CI −10.12% to 1.33%), although the CI was wide.ConclusionsAdherence to recommendation-based physical activity may effectively prevent disability in community-dwelling Japanese older adults.

Predictivity of bioimpedance phase angle for incident disability in older adults

Background Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)‐derived phase angle is expected to be an efficient prognostic marker of health adverse events with aging as an alternative of muscle mass. We aimed to examine the predictive ability of phase angle for incident disability in community‐dwelling elderly and determine the optimal cut‐off values. Methods Community‐dwelling elderly aged ≥65 years (n = 4452; mean age = 71.8 ± 5.3 years, 48.3% women) without disability at baseline participated in this prospective cohort study. Phase angle and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) were examined using a multi‐frequency BIA at baseline. Other potential confounding factors (demographics, cognitive function, depressive symptoms, medications, and physical performance) were also assessed. Incident disability was monitored on the basis of long‐term care insurance certification. Results Over a follow‐up of 24 months, 4.0% (n = 174) experienced disability, with an overall incidence rate of 20.6 per 1000 person‐years. The Cox hazard regression analysis showed that phase angle, as a continuous variable, was independently associated with incident disability after adjusting the covariates [male: hazard ratios (HRs) = 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.37–0.98; female: HR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.37–0.90], although body mass index adjusted ASM was not. Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated moderate predictive abilities of phase angle for incident disability [male: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.70–0.83; female: AUC = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.65–0.76], while those of body mass index adjusted ASM were low (male: AUC = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.521–0.66; female: AUC = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.52–0.63). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that low phase angle categorized by cut‐off value (male, ≤4.95°; female, ≤4.35°) was independently related to increased risk of incident disability (HR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.37–2.78). Conclusions Lower phase angle independently predicts the incident disability separately from known risk factors. BIA‐derived phase angle can be used as a valuable and simple prognostic tool to identify the elderly at risk of disability as targets of preventive treatment.

The Exploration of energization and Radiation in Geospace (ERG) Science Center serves as a hub of the ERG project, providing data files in a common format and developing the space physics environment data analysis software and plug-ins for data analysis. The Science Center also develops observation plans for the ERG (Arase) satellite according to the science strategy of the project. Conjugate observations with other satellites and ground-based observations are also planned. These tasks contribute to the ERG project by achieving quick analysis and well-organized conjugate ERG satellite and ground-based observations.

Background Identifying factors that contribute to the development of sarcopenia in older adults is a public health priority. Although several studies have examined the association between sleep duration and sarcopenia, additional evidence is needed to reveal the causality of this association, especially from a longitudinal study. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether sleep duration was associated with the progression to sarcopenia and its subcomponents among community‐dwelling older adults in Japan. Methods A total of 3918 older community‐dwelling people (mean age: 73.2 ± 6.0 years, 51.8% female) included in the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology Study of Geriatric Syndromes were analysed. Sleep duration was assessed using a self‐reported questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of progression of sarcopenia at Wave 2 (4 years later), according to the three categories of sleep duration [short: ≤6.0 h, medium: 6.1–8.9 h (control), & long: ≥9.0 h)] at Wave 1. Results The numbers in each group in the second wave among the total sample were as follows: short 403 (10.3%), medium 2877 (73.4%), and long 638 (16.3%). Significant associations with the progression of sarcopenia were found in the long sleep duration group compared with the medium one, even after adjustment for other covariates (OR 1.66, 95% CI: 1.02–2.69, P = 0.040). Long sleep duration was significantly associated with slow gait (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.17–2.06, P = 0.002) and low grip strength (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.00–1.78, P = 0.047) but was not associated with low muscle mass (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 0.74–2.38, P = 0.343). Conclusions This study revealed that long sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of progression to sarcopenia among older adults.

We developed an ultra-compact analog front-end for time-of-flight (TOF)-type ion mass spectrometers using application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology. The front-end amplifies signals generated by the microchannel plate of the TOF-type ion mass spectrometer, uses a comparator to distinguish signals from noise, and generates detection signals compatible with low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) standards for subsequent digital processing. Laboratory experiments with the developed ASIC, employing ion beam irradiation, demonstrated that the developed analog front-end has sufficient timing resolution. Temperature tests indicated minimal variation in the detectable input level of the front-end with temperature changes. The experimental results indicated that the developed ASIC front-end is suitable for TOF-type ion mass spectrometry in space applications.
