Objective: This study aimed to examine and evaluate the knowledge levels, attitudes
and anxiety sources regarding coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection in
dentistry students in clinical practice.
Materials and Methods: Fourth- and fifth-year dentistry students of Aydın Adnan
Menderes University and Akdeniz University were selected for this study. For data
collection, a questionnaire survey was performed. The questionnaire contained
34 items on demographic data, knowledge level about COVID-19 infection and
attitudes and anxiety sources about their education. Descriptive statistical methods
and the Pearson chi-square test were used to analyse data. P<0.05 was statistically
significant.
Results: A total of 137 students, including 75 females (54.7%) and 62 males (45.3%),
participated in the study. Significantly higher levels of negativity and anxiety due
to COVID-19 was found in female participants than in male participants, based on
their responses to the following questions: “Do you believe that the lack of face-toface
training due to COVID-19 will negatively affect your working life?”; “Do you
worry about graduating having completed clinical practice without direct patient
care?”; “Do you worry about practising your job because of the coronavirus?” and
the p values were found 0.019, 0.002 and 0.009, respectively. The answers for these
questions were not related to the graduation degree.
Conclusion: The results reveal that female students demonstrated higher stress
levels than male students based on the responses to some questions. Moreover,
responses to the same questions were not related to the graduation degree. Further
larger studies will give more accurate outcomes.

Fractal Analysis of Temporomandibular Joint Trabecular Bone Structure in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis on Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the fractal dimension (FD) analysis
in the temporomandibular joint for changes in trabecular bone structure on cone
beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of patients with rheumatoid arthritis
(RA).
Materials and Methods: In this study 17 female RA patients and 16 healthy female
individuals who were underwent CBCT imaging with for diagnostic purposes such
as pathologic lesion and implant treatment planning, were evaluated and fractal
analysis was performed using Image J (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda,
MD) program with box-counting method. The results were analysed using Student
t-test with SPSS 20.0 (SPSS, Chicago; IL, USA) software program.
Results: According to the results, FD values of RA patients have wide range (for
right side minimum: 0.919, maximum: 1.169 and for left side minimum: 0.958,
maximum: 1.155). Statistical analysis of FD values showed significance between RA
patients and the healthy individuals for both right/left sides (for the right side, the
RA patients had a mean FD of 1.055, and the control group had a mean FD of 1.113;
for the left side, the RA patients had a mean FD of 1.060, and the control group had
a mean FD of 1.111) (p<0.05). There was no significant different between FD values
of right and left side of mandibular condyle.
Conclusion: RA patients have lower FD values than healthy individuals for each
side which means bone complexity of RA patients are less. The results recommend
that FD is a promising tool for detection of bone-related bone changes.

Environmental temperature and air humidity and prevalence of maxillary sinus retention cysts: possible relationships (preliminary study)

ObjectivesThe aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of maxillary sinus retention cysts (MSRCs) and to evaluate the effects of mean temperature and mean air humidity on the prevalence of MSRCs in two cities in Turkey.MethodsThis retrospective study was conducted in Antalya and Erzurum, two cities with different air humidities and temperatures in Turkey. Panoramic images of patients who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Akdeniz University and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Ataturk University for diagnostic purposes were evaluated. A total of 4800 panoramic images were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 27.03 ± 6.48 years. The prevalence of MSRCs was analyzed according to sex, mean temperature, and mean air humidity. Values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.ResultsAmong the 4800 panoramic images evaluated, 228 indicated the presence of MSRCs. MSRCs were found significantly more frequently in males than in females. The prevalence was 3% in Antalya and 6.5% in Erzurum, with a total prevalence of 4.8%. While there was a significant correlation between the total amount of cysts and monthly mean air humidity in Erzurum, the correlation effect size was very low.ConclusionsThe total prevalence of MSRCs was 4.8%. There were no correlations between the frequency of MSRCs and the mean air humidity or mean temperature.
