A multimodal deep reinforcement learning approach for IoT-driven adaptive scheduling and robustness optimization in global logistics networks
2025
This paper presents an approach for adaptive scheduling and robustness optimization in global logistics networks by integrating multimodal deep reinforcement learning with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. We propose an integrated framework comprising a multimodal data fusion mechanism that synthesizes heterogeneous IoT sensor data, historical records, and contextual information; an adaptive deep reinforcement learning architecture that generates dynamic scheduling policies; and a multi-objective robust optimization method that balances operational efficiency with system resilience. The framework addresses key challenges in global logistics including demand volatility, transportation disruptions, and environmental uncertainties. Comprehensive experiments conducted on real-world logistics datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms traditional methods with an 18.7% reduction in operational costs, 12.4% improvement in service levels, and significantly enhanced robustness under various disruption scenarios. The proposed method maintains 83% performance stability during complex disruptions compared to 51–72% for alternative approaches, while keeping computational requirements feasible for practical deployment. This research demonstrates potential contributions to AI-driven logistics operations management by showing improved supply chain performance through multimodal learning and robust optimization techniques.

Education of Children Left Behind in Rural China
2012
Despite China's substantial internal migration, long-standing rural-urban bifurcation has prompted many migrants to leave their children behind in rural areas. This study examined the consequences of out-migration for children 's education using longitudinal data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (N = 885). This study took into account the complex family migration strategies and distinguished various types of migration in China, including different forms of parental migration as well as sibling migration. The results showed that migration of siblings generates benefits for children ' s education, which is particularly pronounced for girls and children at middle-school levels. But parental migration has not given children left behind a significant advantage in educational prospects as their parents had hoped. Younger children seem to be especially susceptible to the disruptive effect of parental out-migration.

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received significant attention in the field of fundamental science recently. These materials offer substantial advancement of technological applications, such as optical data storage, displays, and quantum communication. Various strategies have been proposed in self‐assembled materials consisting of inorganic, organic, and hybrid systems, particularly in the chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems (e.g., chiral liquid crystals (LCs) and LC polymers). However, developing scientific approaches to achieve the pronounced and steerable circularly polarized light emission remains challenging. Herein, we present a comprehensive review on the recent development of CPL materials based on chiral LCs, including thermotropic LCs (cholesteric LCs and bent‐core LCs), lyotropic LCs (nanocellulose LCs and polyacetylene‐based LCs), and LC polymers (cholesteric LC‐based polymers, helical nanofibers, and helical network). In addition, the fundamental mechanisms, design principles, and potential applications based on these chiral LCs and LC polymers in soft matter systems are systematically reviewed. This review summarizes with a prospect on the latent challenges, which can strengthen our understanding of the basic principles of CPL in chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems and provide a new insight into the progress in several fields, such as chemistry, materials science, optics, electronics, and biology. Representative chiral liquid crystals (LCs) with characteristics of circularly polarized luminescence, including cholesteric LCs, bent‐core LCs, lyotropic LCs, and LC polymers.

CRISPR interference-based specific and efficient gene inactivation in the brain
2018
CRISPR–Cas9 has been demonstrated to delete genes in postmitotic neurons. Compared to the establishment of proliferative cell lines or animal strains, it is more challenging to acquire a highly homogeneous consequence of gene editing in a stable neural network. Here we show that dCas9-based CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) can efficiently silence genes in neurons. Using a pseudotarget fishing strategy, we demonstrate that CRISPRi shows superior targeting specificity without detectable off-target activity. Furthermore, CRISPRi can achieve multiplex inactivation of genes fundamental for neurotransmitter release with high efficiency. By developing conditional CRISPRi tools targeting synaptotagmin I (Syt1), we modified the excitatory to inhibitory balance in the dentate gyrus of the mouse hippocampus and found that the dentate gyrus has distinct regulatory roles in learning and affective processes in mice. We therefore recommend CRISPRi as a useful tool for more rapid investigation of gene function in the mammalian brain.

Comparison of Three Algorithms for the Retrieval of Land Surface Temperature from Landsat 8 Images
2019
The successful launch of the Landsat 8 satellite provides important data for the monitoring of urban heat island effects. Since the Landsat 8 TIRS data has two thermal infrared bands, it is suitable for many algorithms to retrieve the land surface temperature (LST). However, the selection of algorithms for retrieving the LST, the acquisition of algorithm input parameters, and the verification of the results are problems without obvious solutions. Taking Changchun City as an example, this paper used the mono-window algorithm (MWA), the split window algorithm (SWA), and the single-channel (SC) method to extract the LST from the Landsat 8 image and compared the three algorithms in terms of input parameters, accuracy, and sensitivity. The results show that all three algorithms can achieve good results in retrieving the LST. The SWA is the least sensitive to the error of the input parameters. The MWA and the SC method are sensitive to the error of the input parameters, and compared with the error of the LSE, these two algorithms are more sensitive to the error of atmospheric water vapor content. In addition, the MWA is also very sensitive to the error of the effective mean atmospheric temperature.

BRDF-Based Photometric Modeling of LEO Constellation Satellite from Massive Observations
2024
Modeling the brightness of satellites in large Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations can not only assist the astronomical community in assessing the impact of reflected light from satellites, optimizing observing schedules and guiding data processing, but also motivate satellite operators to improve their satellite designs, thus facilitating cooperation and consensus among different stakeholders. This work presents a photometric model of the Starlink satellites based on the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) using millions of photometric observations. To enhance model accuracy and computational efficiency, data filtering and reduction are employed, and chassis blocking on the solar array and the earthshine effect are taken into account. The assumptions of the model are also validated by showing that the satellite attitude is as expected, the solar array is nearly perpendicular to the chassis, and both the solar array pseudo-specular reflection and the chassis earthshine should be included in the model. The reflectance characteristics of the satellites and the apparent magnitude distributions over station are finally discussed based on the photometric predictions from the model. In addition to assessing the light pollution and guiding the development of response measures, accurate photometric models of satellites can also play an important role in areas such as space situational awareness.
